Ryan wasn't the problem and neither is Kiffen or Marinelli. The problem is the offense that keeps putting the defense in a position to make the game-winning stop at the end of games because we go super conservative on offense and continually 3 and out. The things we're saying about Kiffen and Marinelli were the SAME things we said about Ryan. He couldn't stop anyone at the end of games. Notice how he doesn't have that problem with the Saints because their offense knows how to put up points and thus give less opportunities to the opposing offenses... and they know how to put games out of reach.

A lot of teams would love to be in the position to make a stop at the end of games to win. You're basically saying we should always have a 2 score lead and the defense shouldn't have to close things out? Why shouldn't they? It's their job equally as much as the offense. Both failed today.

And the thing is, we did have a 2 score lead. Twice.

The defense DID close things out. They gave the offense the ball with around 2 or 3 minutes to go and all we needed to do was get a first down and run out the clock. Guess who runs three times in a row and three and outs and puts the game in the hands of the defense again? This happens over and over and over.

And yet you can argue that the defense has still been better than the offense this season...even with all the injuries.

No, you really can't.

Offense:
4th in scoring
15th in total yards
8th in passing yards

Defense:
17th in points
32nd in total yards
32nd in passing yards

The defense gave up 623 yards. No matter how you want to slice it, that's pitiful. The offense was finally getting big plays in the fourth quarter, pushing it to a two score lead twice. The defense kept giving it right back. The O was far from perfect, and the D did a great job getting turnovers, but that doesn't excuse all the bad play.

We are literally on pace to give up more passing yards than ANY team in NFL HISTORY.

How is anything else considered a bigger problem?

Whatever other faults we have they are not the worst in NFL history.

Huh??? We gave this defense not one but two 10pt leads and they choked both of them away in no time. What are you talking about?

That's inconceivable. And you are right in terms of the elephant in the room. There might be some wildebeasts and hyenas. Only one elpehant.

My point exactly.

I'm talking about us going into the 4th quarter with 88 yards of offense and only 13 points despite a turnover differential of 4 in our favor. At least 10 of those points came off of extremely favorable field position afforded by special teams and defense.

How about we talk about Detroit's offense having significantly longer time of possession despite those 4 turnovers and outscoring us still? If Special teams or defense doesn't score, we are constantly getting outscored by opposing quarterbacks.

#1 in turnovers and that might be the only NFL ranking that has made a difference in the Cowboys' W-L record right now.

Do the Cowboys beat the Giants without the defense forcing 6 turnovers? The offense wasn't that great that night you know. Do they beat the Commanders without Dwayne Harris' returns and 2 turnovers (particularly an RG3 fumble that set up a short Randle TD inside the 5?). The offense wasn't that great that game either. Do they beat the Eagles without the defense making Foles/Barkley look bad and holding them to 3 points? They also held the Chiefs to 17 points while the Cowboys offense gave up 2 turnovers. The only games where the defense was THAT bad was the Chargers and Broncos game. And today, they forced 4 turnovers and did enough to get a win with 1:30 left on the clock with Romo only passing for 206 yards and the running game continuing to be nonexistent.

That Broncos game is creating A LOT of misleading offensive stats. Yes it was a nice performance but it's not the norm so we shouldn't be expecting output like that every game (as Romo's only ecliped 300 yards in one other game). Like it or not, this team may be 2-6 or worse right now if the defense doesn't force those turnovers because the offense has been very inconsistent.

Look at the teams we've had on the schedule so far. Denver, NYG, Detroit, Washington, and San Diego are Top-10 in Yards/Game. With the injuries we've had, the defense has done as much as they can to compete and give the team a chance, even while giving up yards.
