He has done a good job. He deserves a contract but not what he is asking for.
Deserve has nothing to do with it. It is the new market rate.
6 months ago, I bought a 4 BR house for $188K. This week, I got a market report, and it is now valued at $202K I don't "deserve" that extra $14K. But the market has moved.
I hope the Cowboys have an out after 3 years, because I suspect we've already seen Lawrence's best year. But then again, I didn't expect him to ever do as well as he's done this past two seasons. I didn't like the Lawrence pick, and am still not a big believer in him. So far, he's exceeded my expectations. It will be good for the Cowboys if he continues to exceed my expectations - which was for a 5-6 sack per year guy over the course of an 8-10 year career. Lawrence is ahead of my expectations, averaging 6.8 sacks per season over his first 5 years. That's good, but not elite.
By contrast, Ware averaged 13 sacks per season over his first 5 years. Von Miller averaged 12 sacks per season over his first 5 years. Khalil Mack has averaged 11.6 sacks per season. Those are elite players. Lawrence is not an elite player, but he's getting paid like one. I certainly hope he proves me wrong, but I expect many fans to be disgruntled with this deal by the end of 2020.
My prediction: Lawrence gets 12-16 sacks over the next two seasons, and then starts to drop off into the 3-4 sacks per year range. By 2022, the Cowboys cut him to save against the salary CAP, and he's no longer on the team. Please, please prove me wrong...
My second prediction: Robert Quinn will have more sacks in 2019 than DeMarcus Lawrence.
If the Cowboys win a Super Bowl in the next two seasons, it will have been worth the cost.
