Correct me if I am wrong, but Carroll, Paea, and Thornton all had guaranteed money on their contracts, didn't they?

Plus their signing bonus now accelerates so that would seem to eat up some current cap.

Does Paea's retirement wipe off his guaranteed money as a vested veteran?

Enquiring minds want to know.

Same thing as every offseason. No big free agency moves because we'll have to resign our own. I believe Martin (26), Lawrence (25) and Irving (24) will all be UFAs next year. I think we need all three. They're all young, talented and play the trenches.

Until they make a decision on Martin, some of the cap room is not available .

Actually, for 2018, Martin will count as 9MM against the cap. They could actually free up cap space next year with a new deal with Martin depending on how they structure it.

So for example, Over the Cap shows us with around 18 or so million for 2018. That included a 9MM cap hit for Martin.

i think we are still reasonably below the cap this year.
from these wasted moves, the money burnt this year means less money rolled into next year.
i think moves spent during the season is counted 1/2 this year and 1/2 next year?

The good news is (if we resign Martin, Lawrence and Irving) we'll actually have a solid young core of defensive talent. As bad as our defense has looked this season, unlike previous years, I actually have hope for our future. I think the biggest issue right now is that our young guys don't have enough experience (or health) and our veterans are all JAGs. We've already purged ourselves of Thornton, Carroll, Paea, Hayden and some others. One final purge of Scandrick, Crawford, Mayowa and Durant and we should be good. Then just let the young guys develop and continue to add talent.

If our offseason has us resigning all 3, that will be an A++ offseason grade. Young, talented trench players is how you build a team.

I don't see why we wouldn't sign all 3. I know every offseason has tough decisions. This past one, for example, saw us letting go of Leary. As much as I miss him, I still can't blame that decision. We already had a lot invested in the OL, we had 3 All Pros, we had a young guy in Collins, and Free hadn't retired yet. But I can't say the same for releasing Lawrence or Irving. We don't have a surplus of riches on the DL, so I can't justify us cutting a 25-year old who leads the league in sacks or a 24-year old who just got 2 sacks in a game and looked unstoppable.

Irving is a RFA

I thought he was a RFA this past year and will be a UFA this year.

Edit: Never mind. I guess he'll be a RFA. That's good. We only need to worry about Lawrence then next year. I could see us franchising him and making him prove he can stay healthy another year.

Here are our 2018 free agents on D:

DL: Lawrence, Irving (RFA)

LB: Hitchens, Durant, Wilber

DB: Benwikere

Also, Martin isn't officially a UFA until 2019 so we technically don't have to get a deal done this offseason.

I'm sure if we want Lawrence we'll retain him, Irving will be given a high tender so is likely here. Hitchens is interesting and I wonder what his contract would look like.

Cutting Thornton saved 2.75m in 2018 with 2.5m dead money
Cutting Carroll saved 2m in 2018 with 2m dead money
Paea's retirement saves 1.4m in 2017 with 0 dead money

And if Thornton and Carroll have offset language even more can be recovered.....Thornton signed with BUFF for 700k...... DAL could get most of that back

DAL is around 12m under right now and 19m under for 2018 before any rollover
