I'm sure if we want Lawrence we'll retain him, Irving will be given a high tender so is likely here. Hitchens is interesting and I wonder what his contract would look like.
I wouldn't tag DLaw..... that establishes 17m as his salary floor.... I would give 20m gtd on a 50m 4-5 year deal

Hitchens should be a 3/10m type..... good depth and versatility

D Irving is a gonna get a 1st round tender for around 4m

Then he can leave but make him turn down 20m gtd first

He get $17 million guaranteed on a franchise tag. No way he'd give up 4 years for $3 million more than that.

But at this point, given how bad everyone else on the defense is, it may not make any sense to pay to keep him around.

He's playing his tail off now and this defense still can't stop anybody.

He has only made less than 5m for his career and is an injury risk........ take it or leave it 20m gtd and will likely earn the whole 50m

He is a complex case for me. I'm still not sure exactly how I would handle his situation right now.

In addition to the injury, he's also got a last PED suspension on his resume. If he somehow gets another one at any time in his career, he's gone for 10 games. That's another big factor.

But, given the season he's having and demand for the position, he's going to cost big money.

And there's always some team willing to pay it.

I thought he was a RFA this past year and will be a UFA this year.

Edit: Never mind. I guess he'll be a RFA. That's good. We only need to worry about Lawrence then next year. I could see us franchising him and making him prove he can stay healthy another year.

Here are our 2018 free agents on D:

DL: Lawrence, Irving (RFA)

LB: Hitchens, Durant, Wilber

DB: Benwikere

Also, Martin isn't officially a UFA until 2019 so we technically don't have to get a deal done this offseason.
Martin is a worry to me. I wants to get paid his worth [can't blame him] his smart and he just might be willing to walk.
As soon as this season is over I am hopeful the earnest negotiations will begin.
Lawrence isn't yet a worry nor Irving.

That reminds me of the Tyrone Crawford deal. If that's the price, I'd let him walk.

Just because he's the best guy you have doesn't mean you should pay him like the best players. It means you need better players.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Carroll, Paea, and Thornton all had guaranteed money on their contracts, didn't they?

Carroll got a 1MM signing bonus, which he keeps, and 1MM in salary that has probably paid him 300K. So the savings is 700K.

Paea got a 500K signing bonus and a 406K roster bonus, with a 1MM salary of which 500K was guaranteed. So the saving there should be 1 Million.

Thornton had a 2.25MM guaranteed salary, which they paid. Which means they definitely wanted to get rid of him.

Best move would be to franchise him....assuming he has a good year. He's off to a good start.

Make him do it again next year.

Another good year then we can talk long term deal.
That is the worst way to do it.........make a fair offer and stick to it......if he walks we get a 3rd round pick

Look at Kirk Cousins and WAS....... top dollar for 2 years and he still walks or you sign a terrible longterm deal with his last year's inflated salary as the floor

I thought all 3 players salary for the year was guaranteed if they were on the roster on game 1 of this year as vested veterans. Am I incorrect on this?

I hope I am wrong about this.

It completely depends on what is written into each contract. Thornton's 2017 salary was guaranteed so he got all 2.25MM for this year even when he was cut. Paea had a salary of 1MM but only half of it was guaranteed so we will save the other 500K, plus his roster bonus.

From everything I've read Carroll's salary wasn't guaranteed so he keeps his 1MM signing bonus and then got 5/16 of his 1MM salary ($312,500). But we save the other $687,500 against the cap.

But we actually had about 15MM of cap space this year because of the Tony Romo situation, so the extra 1.5 Million or so from these moves isn't a big deal.

A fair offer? Lol.

The chances of Lawrence accepting the offer you describe is about the same as Lucky Whitehead going into the Ring of Honor.

And if Lawrence has double digit sacks, a 3rd round pick is ridiculously low compensation. Edge rushers are too hard to find to let them walk for a 3rd round pick.

My alternative is at least plausible. It is easily the best way to go.

I don't want to get between you two, but.......

I am on this particular fence myself. He will cost a lot of $$$ on the tag but might be a ton more if they sign him to a big contract. We have seen which way those can go.

I like the idea of a fair offer but he will not accept it if he continues on this track. Does Dallas let a DE walk for just a "fair" offer? IDK

It might be best to franchise tag him with the intent of replacement a year later. Spend some money now rather than a lot for years. He really has Dallas in a pickle and his agent knows it.

I just hope that our braintrust isn't counting on Gregory still and let a capable End go. If they don't want to invest long-term in Lawrence, might be a good idea to get another season out of him while they find a replacement.

Of course, all of this hinges on him keeping up this pace. If he disappears soon, let him go.

I agree. I'd rather keep him for another year while we see if we have something in Taco. If we cut him loose and Taco turns out to be a bust, we're back to square one yet again.
