I think the real issue at WR in Dallas isn’t just about Beasley. It’s the whole 2017 group. It was just an average group. Defenses were easily taking away Beasley because they didn’t feel threatened by either Dez or TWill. Some of this falls on Dak too, but Dak is a QB who benefits most from receivers who run reliable routes. Dak doesn’t perform as well with a lot of improvised route running. (Troy Aikman was also a QB who did better when throwing to spots which works best when receivers run disciplined routes)
The issue that must be addressed is this team’s receiving corps needs a major upgrade in both speed and route running. Last year, our receivers put zero fear in the hearts of defensive coordinators. So whatever happens this offseason, either through the draft, FA, or a combo of both, this receiving group is going to look much different in 2018 than last year.
Regarding Beasley - he’s certainly been a great addition to this team for several years and I have great respect for his grit and moxy. But IMO, he’s a slightly above average NFL slot receiver. Is he a top 10 slot receiver in the league. No. The other issue with Beasley is his salary, although at $4.25 million, it’s not crazy for a guy like him, he can be a post June 1 cut and save $3 million in cap space. Some say we should try and trade him. Maybe. But I don’t see us getting much in return.
I’m not saying we absolutely must get rid of Beasley. But it is clear, changes need to be made at WR in 2018, and he could be someone the FO decides its better to move on from. Bottom line is someone we’ve been used to seeing around here for a while is probably headed out. Dez? Beasley? Noah Brown? We’ll see.
