Moving on from Beasley

I think the real issue at WR in Dallas isn’t just about Beasley. It’s the whole 2017 group. It was just an average group. Defenses were easily taking away Beasley because they didn’t feel threatened by either Dez or TWill. Some of this falls on Dak too, but Dak is a QB who benefits most from receivers who run reliable routes. Dak doesn’t perform as well with a lot of improvised route running. (Troy Aikman was also a QB who did better when throwing to spots which works best when receivers run disciplined routes)

The issue that must be addressed is this team’s receiving corps needs a major upgrade in both speed and route running. Last year, our receivers put zero fear in the hearts of defensive coordinators. So whatever happens this offseason, either through the draft, FA, or a combo of both, this receiving group is going to look much different in 2018 than last year.

Regarding Beasley - he’s certainly been a great addition to this team for several years and I have great respect for his grit and moxy. But IMO, he’s a slightly above average NFL slot receiver. Is he a top 10 slot receiver in the league. No. The other issue with Beasley is his salary, although at $4.25 million, it’s not crazy for a guy like him, he can be a post June 1 cut and save $3 million in cap space. Some say we should try and trade him. Maybe. But I don’t see us getting much in return.

I’m not saying we absolutely must get rid of Beasley. But it is clear, changes need to be made at WR in 2018, and he could be someone the FO decides its better to move on from. Bottom line is someone we’ve been used to seeing around here for a while is probably headed out. Dez? Beasley? Noah Brown? We’ll see.

As a comparison:

2016 statistics

#1. Cole Beasley 76.5%
#2. Witten 72.6%
#3. Terrance Willians 72.1%
#4. Dez Bryant 52.1%

Seriously, both of Dak's seasons, Cole has been top 3 of his receivers.

Didn' like the Switzer pick last year and felt we could have addressed bigger needs inthe draft especially with Beasley on he roster.

Switzer could prove me wrong eventually and if that' the case, I Hope it doesn' take until his contract year is here and looking to break the bank

that's all he's capable of
May be.

I hated the pick too. I changed my tune when he became our punt returner though. He looks to have a role on this team.

Nothing personal strictly business. Somebody n th FO thought about replacing Bease or else they wouldn't have drafted Switz, an this wouldn't even be a discussion.

I will say, if ur slot is getting doubled one or both of those outside WRs aren't doing their job, oh an a coach or two.

It's just more fan stupidity. Bite at anything that moves. Go over the roster and see who's getting paid what. Anybody with a high number, question their ability and see if you get any nibbles. Without fail, some people will nibble because of the snap at anything that moves thing.

Beasley's not going anywhere this season.

If they felt comfortable with Switzer, what is the issue?

Teams adjusted to him last year and basically made Beasley an afterthought.

What is going to change this year?
Well they might try adjusting to the adjustments just a thought

Actually its about digging into the cushions for change. Due to the issues of last year Beasley is not fast and can't get open when bracketed by a LB and DB. A lot of that can be fixed if the team had a more vertical passing attack beyond 10 yards.

You put two on a receiver you open it up elsewhere. Beasley is effective.

Drafting Switzer as a Beasley clone is like when we were going to use the two TE sets never happened. Our coaching staff doesn't know what it is doing and has no plan.

Yep it is kinda like putting a sack of poop on someones front porch lighting it knocking and then running off a lil ways and watching what happens

I think it's crazy pants.
Beasley takes double teams, and beats single coverage when he gets it. He's the last WR we should be looking to cut. He's actually positive value compared to his contract. I wouldn't say the same about Dez or Williams. We should be trying to figure out a way to use him as a #2 to get him on the field more often. (But that would require some creativity, so we know it aint gonna happen with our coaching crew.)

As for Switzer, he has done *nothing* on offense, and has been a wash as a punt returner. Some good, some bad. Seemed to be trending up at least, but I think a disappointment on offense and special teams. He's young and cheap, and maybe a cheaper replacement for Bease, and more of a hybrid Dunbar/Bease.

As for trading Bease, there is no point. We'll get a 4th or 5th as a comp pick if we let him go after this season. Trading our guys will rarely make much sense for us, as we tend to stay in positive comp pick territory, by design.

You're exactly right! Somebody starts this stuff and people just jump on the band wagon. There's no good reason to cut Bease. If our other receivers were doing their jobs, opponents wouldn't be able to double team Beasley. So they double up on Beasley, and Dez still can't catch the ball.
People are saying Switzer can replace Beasley, but Switzer has done nothing to prove that! Nothing.

Switzer wasn't drafted to replace Beasley, but to team with him to give Dak more underneath options, that is his bread and butter.
