By default.

Because there simply wasn't any other legit competition for the backup center role on the roster.
Not Hoffman. Not Lindstrom. And apparently the club did not feel being held hostage by a player they did not
think was worth a 53 man roster.

Otherwise Farniok would still be on this 53 man roster.
How is the only backup center not worth a roster spot? Even if t is not Farniok, it seems to me to be an important backup position and a roster spot must be needed on any game day.

Ugh don’t even get me started on Hoffman. Even though Farniok didn’t play well, the ONLY reason I can guess they kept Hoffman over him is to give the guy time to develop. But man…he would have to have an INCREDIBLE redshirt year to earn the PS next year. The guy was way worse than Farniok as a center. Honestly he was the worst PS lineman IMO
From what I read, they offered Farniok a spot on the practice squad and he turned it dow. Same with Houston and Jabril Cox.

Hoffman was likely a panic / make sure we have something there.

Sean Harlow will likely be the guy later in the season. I know Martin would be the guy calling protections, but he may not be ready after two weeks with the team.

Sean Harlow is 28 with 32 games under his belt Including 8 starts. He will be the guy in a few weeks.

They activate roster spots from the practice squad on game day.

Farniok cut himself with his play. I’m sure the Cowboys thought he could be a decent backup C, but you can’t just be that in a backup role. You have to have position flex and Farniok was consistently getting blown up in preseason at the guard position. He just doesn’t have the strength at this level
Agreed.

This makes SO MUCH sense. I love evaluating OL play and watched every lineman every snap and I’m telling ya Hoffman was directly responsible for like 30% of the offensive snafus in the preseason. It was brutal to watch, and I have no clue why he started every game.

They should’ve started Farniok at C in game 3 when Bass started at RG, but I think the reason they didn’t is because Ball looked so good at guard (he really did), they wanted to see if he somehow just made a leap and could play RT too. Turns out he still can’t (LOL) and got injured in the process. It was a stupid decision, and I wish they had just gone Richards, Bass, Farniok, Ball, Waletzko in game 3. Bass played LG in college so I really believe he can do both G spots and is going to learn to be an emergency center this year.
