Well the argument there is that we would have approx. $35 million more to play with in FA to address the poor defensive play. I'm not arguing one way or the other - just saying
even that argument would be flawed.
Kyler Murray was the #1 pick last year. His cap hit was 6.3 million this past season.
his hits the next 2 years are around 10-11 million.
the price will go up a bit. Safe to say that Burrow as the first overall pick would cost at least 7 mil against the cap.
Russell Wilson’s cap hit after his extension last season was 26 million.
his cap hit the next two years are 31 and 32 respectively.
So even if Dak got a Russell Wilson deal. The cap savings from a first overall pick QB would only be $20 million in cap savings per year. Not 35.
what can you get for 20 mil in free agency? One marquee player and a Lower level player?
Two above average players?
So you can sign one all pro free agent or two above average starters. But now you have no first round picks and less second and third round picks for years?
That 20 mil cap savings will make up for not having any premium picks for years?
I don’t buy it.
It’s also one more reason why people are stressing over the AAV number way too much. Everybody is reporting Russell’s contract as being “35 mil per year”.
well his cap hit doesn’t even touch 35 mil until his freaking 4th year in the deal, when the cap will also be at least 30 million higher than it is now. If not more once the new CBA is agreed on.
the misinformation campaign about QB contracts is ridiculous.
Actually it could be argued that this off season is the best time to re sign a QB because the cap should by all indications increase significantly with the new CBA.
