Yeah, I think we're not going to agree on this one. The rushing yards are great, but I'd rather have a less productive back who doesn't cough up the ball. Honestly. League MVP discussion is solely a function of him being on pace to top the total rushing yards and total yards from scrimmage marks. Both huge accomplishments, but I'd rather have the points at the end of the ten-or-so drives he's on pace to cough up the ball for.

.
Yes, they should have an Adjusted Rushing Yards stat where they deduct 100 yards for each fumble. I really think they have to consider the fumbles when it's contract time.

But. But. Doesn't Arizona have the #3 ranked run defense in the NFL right now?

Yes it's going to be tough but the team has managed to run on some pretty good run defenses so far. It will be a great battle within the game.

An injured star QB.

An inexperienced backup QB.

The Cardinals, one of the NFL's best teams, coming to town.

An opposing defense - Arizona's - that brings the blitz and brings it hard.

A Cowboys coaching staff that probably regrets not running the ball as much as it should have against the hated Commanders.

All to say, Murray should get ready for 30+ carries Sunday.

I say unto you: Huzzah!

But with Coach Dr. Jerra and his weak underling, Jason, you just can't count on convention or wisdom or smartness. Those qualities are what half got me bye all these years, but with them two, well, you can never tell.

If we can manhandle the Seahawks defense, in Seattle, we can manhandle the Cardinals defense at home. Execute, and want it!

Bottom line is that any defense worth its salt can stop the run when it wants to if it's willing to go light in the secondary, and Arizona actually prefers to play that way. Either the Cowboys' OL and coaching staff delivers a masterful running game performance on Sunday or they'd better be able to make Arizona pay with their passing game.

Exactly. I expect Arizona to load 8 or 9 men in the box and take their chances with Weeden or an injured Romo.

I can't be the only one who notices that Murray doesn't put his index finger on the tip of the ball. I have watched this since he started fumbling, and through week 8 he has not corrected it. When I was a RB in highschool this was one of the first things they taught me. I am no coach, but I think maybe this has something to do with the fumbles, and I don't understand how the coaches haven't seen this.

Partly true. Load up in the box but it only take a crease than the RB is off to the races since there is no second line of defense. We've seen it with our own defense many years now. Try to stop the run but only get gashed for big chunk or TD.

Just because the box is loaded doesn't mean we don't run. I hope the coaches know that.

For Murray....this is game to prove that I am worthy of a big pay day. Murray needs to prove that without a QB and passing game he can simply takeover when given a chance by the coaches. If he does that I may change my mind about resigning him.

RB by committee this week especially. We don't need to put Murray at further risk to an injury with extra carries against an AZ looking to stop the run. And we need the fresh legs out there.

I think we will see a lot more passes to the RBs in the flat, underneath, and screens. It would not surprise me to see us pass more than run this game.

The defense is going to have to go out and win this game. We need our defense to play lights out and get a few turnovers.

You are talking my language. Of course I hope Murray runs for 1000000 yards this year, but we know that will not happen. It is going to be interesting to read the comments from people that have been begging Dallas to run Murray "until his legs fall off".....when he has no juice or burst with 4 games left + playoffs. There are a ton of other people on this team making a paycheck. Of course you run Murray....but Escobar was invisible Monday night. Dez did not impact the game the way a man of his talent is supposed too. We do NOT have to overuse Murray!

Arizona is flying high now with the best record in the league. I'd like to see our Boys send a message to the league by blowing out Arizona. Last weeks loss was a fluke that just doesn't sit right with me. Punching the schoolyard bully in the mouth will establish our Boys as still the top dog. It all starts with our O line creating running lanes for the RBs and protecting the QB on passing downs.

This is actually team you should be passing against. They are not good against the pass and are very good at stopping the run. They are going to come into this game prepared to stop Murray. A good gameplan would be to attack their weakness when they don't ecpect it.

Bingo. Unfortunately I don't think our coaching staff is smart enough to think this way. They will be thinking about pounding the rock over and over and won't have a plan B to adjust. Recipie for a loss.

Run the ball, tackle on defense, and the game will be won. Cowboys got away from their fundamentals on Monday and it bit them.

Yeah. I say. Ride Murray to victory.

Control TOP.
Ball control.

I can't see Carson beating us anyway.

Coughlin Teaches, Barber Learns, and the Giants Are the Big Gainers
By DAVE ANDERSON
October 4, 2004

HIS yardage was always there, but so were the fumbles. For all of Tiki Barber's gains, he lost the ball too often. And the Giants too often lost the game.

But no longer.

Not since Barber, whose 52-yard touchdown dash sparked yesterday's surprising 14-7 victory over the Packers, accepted what he called the "the philosophy and the technique" that Coach Tom Coughlin "drilled into my head" on how to prevent what had been his flaw as a running back - fumbling the ball.

Over the four previous National Football League seasons, Barber fumbled 35 times, more than any other running back. And the opposing team had recovered 17 of them.

With 182 rushing yards against the Packers as the Giants roared to a 3-1 start going into next Sunday's game against Bill Parcells and the Cowboys at Dallas, Barber has already streaked to 455 yards on 73 carries this season, a dazzling 6.2-yard average.

Even more important, he has not had any fumbles, primarily because Coughlin changed the way he carried the ball.

"I don't want to put my hands out," Barber said, extending each of his arms from his side. "That exposes the ball."

More often than not in past seasons, Barber's extended arms enabled tacklers to knock the ball from his grasp. But as soon as Coughlin arrived early this year as the Giants' coach, he ordered Barber to hold a football across his chest.

Even before the minicamps began, Barber had to walk around holding a football that way.

Over the years, other coaches have had fumblers hold a football as they walked to meals at training camp, even hold a football as they slept. Anything to make a fumbler more aware of holding on to it.

But in Barber's case, every so often as he walked around the Giants' locker room with a football across his chest, an assistant coach would sneak up and try to slap the ball away.

Sometimes they succeeded. Mostly, they didn't.

But day by day, Barber became more and more conscious of holding on to a football the way Coughlin demanded. More conscious of not fumbling.

"You force yourself to change," Barber said. "You know it's his way," meaning Coughlin's, "or the highway."

That's coaching, which is really teaching. That's making a football player, who is really just a football student, a better football player, a better student.

Not that Barber is never going to fumble again. Fumbles happen. But the best backs seldom fumble. And in his eighth season, the 5-foot-10 and 200-pound Barber is a better back than he has ever been.

If we run 40 times and are more effective passing the ball than they are, we are almost certain to win.

If we run 15 times and are more effective passing the ball than they are, we are almost certain to win.

The bottom line is that no matter how often we run or how well we run, the game will almost certainly be won by the team that passes more effectively -- as is usually the case.

Like I said the league MVP isn't determined solely by numbers. In 2011 Drew Brees out produced Aaron Rodgers in every statistical category setting a then NFL record of 5476 passing yards and setting an NFL record for completion percentage with 71.2% yet Rodgers was named the league MVP due to leading the Packers to a 15-1 record despite having the 32nd ranked defense.

Well, then, let's put it this way: Murray's in the MVP conversation only insofar as he's putting up numbers. If a factor other than numbers is going to be involved, that'll work against him rather than for him.
