Must eliminate the Penalties

This was the 2nd most concerning thing last night. Those special teams penlaties made me cringe!

No need to mention what #1 was....

Penalties have been an ongoing issue with the Cowboys they remain an undisciplined team. Every year this is brought up and every year it remains an issue regardless who's coaching the team.

Is it possible that ESPN is wrong. I heard the same info, that we were second onlybto the Raiders.

You misheard what they said. They said we were second in penalty differential, not penalties committed.

This is a pretty good point, but it's also worth considering that the others didn't have enough snaps to do so.

Which is why a stat like that really doesn't mean much.

There's no excuse for 12 penalties.

Almost all of our penalties were on players who should barely play this season, if they even make the team --

Parnell (2)
Olawale
T. Williams
Butler
Arkin
Harris
McQuistan
Leary
L. Smith
Taplin-Ross

Thanks for pointing that out. I do agree with Garrett that some guys were trying to do more to prove themselfs and ended up making penalties.

What then about last years starters, Garrett's team, that was mentally focused but yet still commited an enormous amount of infractions?

I agree they need to cut down on that but it is also pretty common in pre season games to get sloppy play and penalties especially with guys trying to just make the team.

I don't know. Even the commentators pointed out how ugly this game was compared to the others they saw so far.

I'm not comparing to any 1 game this past weekend but in general you see a lot more mistakes and penalties in pre season it has been that was in all 46 years I have watched the NFL. Guys listed on penalties were not front line starters they were young guys trying a bit too much to impress the coaches to make the team. To compare a pre season game in any way to that of a reg season is beyond stupid. You have guys coming in and out of the game you have guys getting their 1st taste.

Point is this team has been committing stupid penalties for YEARS now and Jason has seen it first hand - it should have been a priority of his in his first year to clean them up, yet we saw no real improvement in that area.

That clip that they showed last night from last years giant game was painful to watch, especially for such a big game.

Not to mention the playoff game in 07 when we had driven down the field on our first possession of the second half and had a chance to get back some momentum but what happens...False Start Flo strikes again...

You'd think that it would have taught them a lesson.....

and this is his 1st year with a full off season. I agree we must cut down on penalties but using last nights game or any pre season game as an indicator is foolish. We had 12 last night, Gaints had 11 and NO had 10 and none of that means these issue will happen during the reg season. We will not know that until the reg season and starters are playing the entire game.

I wasn't referring to last nights game - Jason was the coach for all of last year, was he not. Yet last year we still committed a bunch of penalties.

And not having a full off season is no excuse IMO - he's been around this team long enough to get his point across.

In order for this team to be a real contender they MUST eliminate the penalties! It is very frustrating when the defense makes a great stop to have the special teams unit commit a dumb penalty (twice)!

:bang2:

Incredible insight! Here I was thinking if only they committed a few more penalties, then maybe they'd have a chance at contending.

Let it go, bro.

They cannot understand the concept of a preseason game with a bunch of players that will not be on the Cowboys, or the fact that last year was LAST YEAR!

Believe me...if there were no penalties last night, it would be something else to cry about.

Yeah, last year was a bad year, no OTA's, the lockout, etc. But, that was last year. Why people want to compare this year to last year when this year has not even started yet is beyond me.

As someone else said...many of these posters cry because their microwave popcorn is not done fast enough.

The OP has a good point. This team is cursed with stupid penalties. Why? Is this team really that dumb or just unfocused? The troubling thing is that some of the teams best players have been guilty of this over the years. I have seen Ware and Witten hurt the team with penalties.

That's my whole point of the thread...

this has been a problem for years... It is so frustrating. You CAN NOT give teams automatic first downs in the league.. You will get shredded.

Yep...

Using one game as a barometer IS foolish. You are 100% right on that.

Where I disagree is on the '1st year with full off-season' comment having relevance to penalties. That has relevance to player development, to scheme adoption, to a lot of things. But discipline and culture should have an immediate impact on mental penalties.

A Garrett-led team should not be in the worst half of the league in penalties in 2012, full stop. If it is, something is wrong. If it isn't, he should be given credit for making the change in the team culture. I'm optimistic for the latter.

I was thinking the same. No more blaming Wade for the lack of discipline and sloppiness. This is JG's team now, with JG's players. If we don't tighten things up this season and start limiting the penalties then maybe he isn't everything we thought he was.

in 2010 JG took over half way, so that dosent count

in 2011 there was the lock out so that dosent count

so really 2012 is JGs first seaon as HC, he is a rookie HC :)

I will chalk this up to young/bubble players trying to make a play to stand out. Now they stand out but it isn't the good way of standing out.

I chalk it up to coaching. Emphasis has to be put on this kind of stuff.

Offsides penalty on a punt - unforgiveable -not for a player but the coaching staff.
