The lack of development at college is true but today NFL place too much on a qb. THAT is why they are so hard to find. They want guys who can zip it 40-50 times a game pretty much error free. Football wasn't design that way. There always been some good qbs coming out of college but teams ignore them the running qbs. Now NFL teams are more open to them, willing to modify a play book and coach them up some.

There has been much debate about QB's here lately and I've been right smack "DAB" in the middle of it. We've debated back up QB's and starting QB's, drafting QB's or signing FA QB's, using veteran QB's or developing young or inexperienced QB's. Well, after a few hours of research, and talking to a D1 coach and scout today, I have to admit I have been way off about some of my views and ideas. It would take up a whole page to discuss every single one of them, but here is the main point. The QB position has declined to a such a degree where there are not enough of them to put two or three good ones on every team in the NFL. College teams just aren't devolving them. These kids are either zone read QB's, or they are running the spread and not being taught how to read defenses anymore. I will let you smart guys teach us the ins and outs of why they are having such a hard time, but the bottom line is we should consider ourselves very lucky to have a good starting QB after Tony went down. It's almost impossible to have a good backup, or a third team guy who can play with success. Look at some of the guys who are starting, or looking at significant playing time in the NFL this year, and who teams are fighting to have right now. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Trevor Simien, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Hill, Case Keenum, Blaine Gabbert, Geno Smith, Colt McCoy, Drew Stanton, Boykin, Schaub, Mallet, Henney, Shaun Hill, Tolzien, McGloin, Savage, Flowers, Nassib, Gradkowski,!!!! I could go on and on. It's a sad situation, and it's not going to get better any time soon.

With all that being said. Thank God we have been fortunate enough to wind up with who I think will end up being our QB of the future. This kid is the real deal and I believe he is going to be more like Russel Wilson than Choke McNabb. You can call it what you want, blind luck, great scouting, JJ intuition, I don't care. The bottom line is he is here, and from the talk of some very smart football guys, he's the real deal.
Surely every coach in college knows what the NFL is looking for, so it would make sense for them to change their schemes accordingly, in order to best prepare their guys to be top draft prospects. I'm guessing the problem is that either they don't know how to teach these kids, or there's a monetary influence leading to a "win now, *** the kids' futures" coming from the schools.
Hopefully more college coaches and schools will start considering the guys' future after college.

Dak stinks and Romo will be back on 2 weeks. That is the sad type of nonsense you are hearing from some around here. For me personally, I have never been more excited in a long time to start the season.
Could you link a post that says "Dak stinks"

looking forward to that one.

I think most all of us are really happy with Dak's play.

It'd be nice if things overlapped better, I agree.

But the incredibly vast majority of college players never have a pro career.
The college coaches job is absolutely to win football games.
They get fired very quickly if they don't

Ugh... ANYTHING but a TE. I'd rather take 7 deep snappers next draft than another early round TE. :D
Hah! You wouldn't even know what to do with a deep..........Oh wait, you probably mean a long snapper, don't you? Never mind.

I know, I just wish a few more would try to figure out how to win while preparing the kids for the NFL.... Just more of a lamentation than anything else.

Because, as usual, the media shoved the top picks down our throats and most swallow.

Again.....I still don't think any of the QB's slated for round one this year were round one worthy. The draft and it's rounds are 50/50 AT BEST, IMO.

Denver had Dak in for a workout. Kubiak, ex QB mind you, AND John freakin' Elway.....they passed. Picked Lynch. Go figure.

You almost have to sit these guys a year or two, yes I definitely wanted Dak to sit this year, so they can actually learn the position. When you hear QB's saying they were never taught to read a D, can't identify the Mike LB ..., you realize how much trouble teams are in when it comes to drafting these guys. We will see what we have in a week. I know he wants to be a pocket passer but I hope he doesn't forget that his legs are an important part of his package as well.

I share everyone's hope in Dak, but for the love of all that is holy, can we see some regular season games before we anoint this guy the future?

No, that's not allowed. Immediate hyperbolic overreaction is required.

So just because Elway took Lynch over Prescott, the same QB we were trying to trade up for also. This means Dak sucks because Elway and Kubiak didn't take him instead?
Or am I reading your post wrong?
Way wrong........

If Dak stinks Romo won't be back until he's completely healthy. Whatever the time table for his return is the Cowboys will error on the side of caution after what happened last season. Romo is an aging player and he's not going to be fully recovered from this injury in 2 weeks.

2nd round TE you know it's coming lol

NOOOOOO!!! I want a defensive lineman in the first, a CB or lineman in the second, a QB in the third, and defense the rest of the way with maybe a WR in the 7th. Maybe.

I think some have gotten a little over enthusiastic with our rookie QB and we have yet to see how this is going to play out. On the other side, there is no reason not to be excited based on what we've seen in preseason. But that is preseason and he was basically playing catch with his receivers.

I am looking forward to seeing him over these 4 games to see how he responds to the different defenses set up to stop him, if he's seen as a threat. The first threat is the run game and every DC knows we want to run the ball and that favors a young QB.

When was the last time a 4th round QB was asked to start in his first game? This is most unusual and will be the focus of coverage of opening weekend. If he shines, every team that took a QB ahead of him will be asking "what did we miss? What didn't we see"?

But the most unusual part of this, and the most intriguing, is the set up, He is stepping into the exact opposite situation almost all starting rookie QBs have to traverse, he's got one hell of an offense to step into with half the starters pb players. What was the defense of Romo in his early years? No team around him, he's a one man band. Dak will not have that to deal with, only his own inexperience stands in his way.

I do not expect to see what we saw in the preseason, there will be mistakes and he will stumble. It's how he responds to that I want to see. That's what separates the QB1's and the career backups.

A 4th round QB starting isn't any different than a first round QB or an UFDA QB starting their first game. Draft position is irrelevant after the draft.

Agreed but no one would be questioning the performance if we had gotten Wentz or Lynch. We'd all be looking it with little hesitation. The fact he was drafted in the late 4th will effect how we view his preseason games more than how we would have viewed a guy taken in the first. If Dak would have done what Goff did, we'd be thinking he is a total miss.

It's pretty much all a crap shoot with a QB. The key is to get good guys around him (which is in process) however certainly a much more effective defense which will help him be successful.
I was thinking that it would be very instrumental to have Romo help develop Dak (now and after the inevitable in the next year of so). Through his own fortunes and misfortunes Romo has leaned how to handle the role of DC QB (media, coaches, owner, teammates). He has also learned how to effectively read defenses, practice/film, handle his own mentality and teammates in adverse conditions. I think Romo could pass as a QB coach, perhaps OC in a heartbeat and we have an asset with him even on the bench much more than what we have without. If Dak wants to put forth the work ethic (Peyton Manning) and off season work and leadership (Tom Brady) he can certainly be the real deal.

Really? I didn't come away with that from here. I think what we have is older posters are a bit more tempered because we've seen this rodeo before and know what a rookie is up against it can get ugly. Younger posters always want the next big thing and that could be Dak. Believe me, I would've been the same way.

I love Romo and hope he comes back healthy because he gives us the best chance to win, but I am rooting like crazy for Dak. I think he'd be a terrific player on the field and good representative off it and if he tears it up and goes 6-1, he deserves the job.

I want Tony to come back and I'm just as excited about Dak as you. Let's see what happens.
