My case against Wade Phillips

I have thought since we started playing fairly poorly in December that Wade Phillips was playing for his job when we got into the Playoffs.

Here are the reasons why I feel they should go ahead and promote Jason Garrett:

1) It is fairly clear that Jerry Jones really likes Jason Garrett. I think for the most part, it is expected that he will be a Head Coach in the NFL at some point. He is on our Coaching Staff now but he will be a hot comodity and we should go ahead and make the move.

2) The Cowboys came into the game with the Giants with the number 1 seed, a 1st Round By, Homefield advantage, 12 Pro Bowlers, 3-4 All Pros, Comeback player of the year and we still lost.

The Giants were without their 2 starting Corners, Jeremy Shockey, Aaron Ross went down, which eventually led to a Practice Squad player (his name escapes) being brought into the game for the first time in his career and the Cowboys still lost.

We also were beaten by a team we beat twice in the Regular Season and won by double digits both times.

3) Wade Phillips is 60 years old and has been a Head Coach/Interim Head Coach 3 times, including his stint here. He has a 0-4 Playoffs record and at some point you have to make the assumption that Wade Phillips is what he is, a decent Coaching Assistant, but as a Head Coach, extremely mediocre.

4) I really don't want to get into the Playoff Game against the Giants, but the Defense certainly dug in in the 2nd Half but that Giants' drive at the end of the 2nd Quarter was pathetic and Wade Phillips didn't adjust. Plenty of blame to go around, including Wade Phillips

I agree, I think this team needs someone to get rid of the sensitive players like RW and bring in some guys that want to win and do nothing but work to do it...what a waste of a year. Terry Glenn worked all year to come back and watch his team mates put their tail between their legs and roll over....just sickening:bang2:

He is no better than the guy most of us wanted to get rid of. That was the most amazing choke job in franchise history.

Wade should be fired tonight, no questions asked. The guy is a bum, 0-4 speaks for itself.

His defense choked and his policy against penalties is a complete and absolute joke and it bit him in the arse today.

His "yee haw let's go have some fun boys" hillbilly approach works for one year after having a tyrant like Parcells, but it's going to wear off quick. We need to get a real coach in here before the window closes.

Garrett should be demoted after this game, not promoted. How you don't score more than 20+ points on a team working with their 6th CB is inexcusable.

This team needs someone who is young, organized and knows when to lay down the hammer and when not too....my vote goes to Jim Schwartz.

What are you talking about with Jason Garrett?

Miles Austin was wide-open on the deep pass, and TO also was good on the long ball. If any coach needs to be blamed, it's Parcells boy, Sparano. He can't get his offensive line any fluidity, and they couldn't hold anything.

Those runs in the first half were all Barber and his grit.

In some ways it's not as bad as you say and in others it's worse. It wasn't the worst choke job in history, by far. But it was another in a series of choke jobs in the latter part of the season.

This team peaked at the wrong time and when they needed it the most were missing something.

I bet you think Norv should be demoted too.

Strange how going back to a "retread" gets the Chargers two playoff victories, and Wade doesn't even get us one.

Garrett called a great game. The defense was atrocious (Wade's problem).

When Garrett called the bomb to Austin, it was wide open, but there was jailbreak on the line - no one blocked anyone. Sparano is overrated.

I just actually read through the OP and his reasons are summed up this way:

1. The offense sucked.
2. The defense was pretty good.

Thus, fire Wade.

BRILLIANT!

The defense allowed 230 yards and a TD drive on a short field. They had two bad drives. All in all they had a solid game.

When we add a corner and Spencer and Ware matures, we will be even better.

terrible preparation... all year we started slow NO URGENCY LIKE FAT UNCLE WADE.

terrible special teams... wade doesn't value ST

pretty porous defense.... mr fix it done broke it worse

abysmal in-game coach. burns timeouts o-plenty. stupid play calling, lack of smarts (attack a depleted secondary) and inability to coach his coaches.

treated the last month of the season like the preseason... LAZY

choke artist. another playoff lost pinned RIGHT on his back

GET LOST WADE.

Serioulsy, is this guy already working on the Miami gameplan. You really can't tell me that the HC opportunity and $$$ is not on his mind. Ditto for Garrett.

When Demarcus Ware matures?

Im sorry, there is way too much talent on this defense for them to let teams score on them in 47 Seconds or whatever time it took Eli Manning to drive down the field just before the half ended.

The sad part is, I think that probably was there for the Giants the entire game.

There is no way Jerry Jones leaves this team with Wade Phillips and no Jason Garrett. He only avoided making Garrett head coach last year because he was still to inexperienced to become a head coach right away. But after having success as the OC, I think Jerry will take a chance on him rather than keep Wade and the cupboard bare.

Not sure if it was worse than 1979 against the Rams but it was pretty bad.

I remember thinking, we haven't been the 1 seed and played the last game of the divisional round since 1979 and hoped the result would not be the same. Not only was it the same, the score was almost identical 21-17 instead of 21-19

Main problem is that it doesn't really work that way. Dallas would have to meet Rooney Rule requirements. That means firing Wade, then posing off as legitimately finding new candidates, particularly minority candidates.

Plus, getting rid of Wade after his first season going 13-4 probably would scare off future head coaches. At least w/San Diego they could say that Marty got chances (note it's plural) to win a playoff game and he couldn't, so they were justified in firing him.

Not only that, I think the defense improved quite a bit this year from last year, but they certainly have room for improvement. Of course that's quite understandable given it's Wade's first year and likely with time and continuity (one of the most important factors to success in the NFL) the defense will even get better.

To me, it's not the smart move right now. We're banking a lot on a guy that has little experience as a coach who had one yar of taking a very good Cowboys offense into a great one. And we're banking that over a guy who is a proven good (not great) head coach in this league who has a knack of improving defenses.

If Garrett cannot wait two more year to be head coach, I can't really blame him. But getting rid of Wade right now would be a foolish move on Dallas' part.
