Our CB for 09 will be..
Newman- One of the best in the game...when healthy..I'm not confident that he will play all 16 games. Seems to be injury prone the last few years
Jenkins-Solid..but needs alot of work
Scandrick-Edges out Jenkins and could be a great corner.
Henry-Slow,overpaid,ZERO leadership, constantly torched for TD's
Ball- Ummmm....
So if/when Newman gets injured that leaves Jenkins and Scandrick..with Henry or Ball in nickel? thats just asking for trouble.
We are 10 million under the salary cap after we sign our draft choices(correct me if I'm wrong)..Releasing some dead weight could even help clear up more room. Zach Thomas will also be leaving which creates 5 more million.
Release
Ellis..Overpaid,old,ZERO leadership..can be replaced via draft
Henry-Slow,,constantly getting beat, overpaid,ZERO leadership..can be replaced via draft
RW(38)- Servicable SS but is making way to much than what he actually brings to the team..release or reconstruct that contract..or can be replaced via draft
With those 3 gone and Zach that can add an extra 11-13 million to the cap. Ware is going to get paid, but that still leaves more than enough. With 11 draft picks this year, we can replenish what we already cut, and get alot younger.
Nnamdi is the definition of a shutdown corner. I live in the Bay Area and always hear about him. I always get a chance to watch him and hes a phenom. Making the probowl and 1st team all defensive team shows how great he really is. With Newman and Asomugha, it would only make Ware and Spencer that much better(scary). They both can be left on islands, creating more pressure and different schemes. It would also help out the safetys play more against the run. With pacman gone, we really need more depth at the CB position, because if Newman goes down, it could get ugly. I've heard nothing about great things about Nnamdi from the raider organization and is a "team first" kind of guy. He plays in Oakland and you never hear a word from him, that should tell you something. Great teammate and even better player.
Another point is that the Eagles signed Asante last year even when they had Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard..adding a shutdown corner is always a good thing. They were ranked 3rd overall in defense, partly due to the fact that they could bring more pressure with two corners on an island.
Nnamdi has stated that he would rather not sign back with Oakland(can you blame him?)..Just kind of spilling my thoughts here with words. Do you guys agree with me?
I agree with you in principal. I'm a big fan of going after quality in FA. Ultimately you need to do it in the draft. But when you do step up and go after a FA, it should be the highest quality players.
I'd rather get sucked into overpaying a true all-pro type player 10%. Give him a deal averaging 8.8 mil when he may really be worth 8 mil a year.
That's a lot better than going after a mid tier FA, pay him 15 mil on a 5 year deal, only to find out he can't start for you.
There risk with any move, it just seems hard to screw up signining the best player at his position.
And that's what Asomugha is. I think he's the best since Sanders.
With all that said, a CB FA signing this year just doesn't fit. We may not keep the UFA's we have.
Our list of needs don't include CB.
S, NT, MLB and OL is our list. I wish Ed Reed was availible. I'd sooner sign Haynesworth to play NT.
