Agreed, does not get near the recognition he deserves. He is probably my all time favorite Cowboys defensive player...maybe tied with Irvin overall. I was lucky enough to meet him a little over a year ago. You couldn't ask for a nicer guy. He let me hold one of his Super Bowl rings while taking a picture with him. I was in seventh heaven. :)

That's me. I don't really get attached to players. I don't have that gene where I'm wishing them well on another team competing against us.

But if I have any loyalty like that at all it's to Irvin and Woodson.

Mock Draft

This is what I would do NOT what I think the Cowboys will do.

I had this all written out and done a month ago with, of course, Carsus of Bismarck arriving to Big D on a donkey and feeding everyone (even Stephen). I predicted the crucifixion at 1. I quoted the scripture of Parcells 9:31 - and they shall not pick him; and they'll say he is killed, but lookit, after three picks he shall rise again. It all tied in nicely. I even updated it to point out you couldn't spell Romans without R-a-m-s. How they had to move this offseason. They couldn't have Saint anywhere in their name after this. Los Angeles was more appropriate as in Lost your soul and truly Angel-less.

We were football saved. Just keep that roof closed during games and we were golden.

This should have had all happen. But we were once again Jerry Jonesed.

This franchise is dead. But let's play along as if this draft class matters.

1(4) Ezekiel Elliott RB Ohio St.
Don't take a RB in the first round. Or an OG. Or a RT. I say take impact players high. Elliott is an impact player providing you have the pieces and philosophy on offense to showcase his skills. Rookie of the year front runner.

2(34) Kevin Dodd DE Clemson
First round talent who could very well still be available at this point based off only one year of production. Emerging player who may end up the best pure pass rusher in this draft. With the size to be scheme versatile.

3(67) Nick Vannett TE Ohio St.
The most complete TE in this draft. Excellent blocker. Underutilized receiver. Red zone weapon. Witten's heir apparent.

4(101) Javon Hargrave DT South Carolina St.
Quick twitch developmental 3 tech still on the board due to the level of competition he has faced so far.

4(135) Blake Martinez ILB Stanford
Highly instinctive tackle machine will help immediately on special teams while competing for a job on defense.

6(189) Ryan Smith CB North Carolina Central
Former S moved to corner the last two years. Has the natural cover skills to surprise in the NFL.

6(212) Duke Williams WR Auburn
Wild card of the draft. If he's here he's worth the risk. Paging Calvin Hill.

6(216) Tyrone Holmes DE Montana
Nation's sack leader who seems to have fallen through the cracks. Great get off. Deserves a flyer and a Marinelli nickname.

6(217) Stephane Nembot T Colorado
Has the size, length and feet to potentially backup both tackle spots.

Note - Anyone's true mock draft occurs when the team is actually on the clock with their picks. Nobody knows what will be available at each pick. I guarantee you players you think could have gone in round 2 will be there in round 4. Happens every year.

What I did last year in the mock....

1(27) Eli Harold OLB Virginia - Little to note. Came on some towards the end of the year. 1 start.

2(60) Grady Jarrett DT Clemson - Couple of starts, couple of sacks. Promising rookie year.

3(91) Duke Johnson RB Miami - 7 starts as the Browns' most productive rookie. 61 catches.

4(127) Jaquiski Tartt S Samford - Took the starting job and ran with it. Huge rookie year.

5(163) JaCorey Shepherd CB Kansas - The Eagles felt so good about him in the summer that they traded Brandon Boykin. Then Shepherd blew his knee out a day later. Season over.

7(236) DeAndre Smelter WR Georgia Tech - Still coming back from an ACL tear. Niners hoping next year.

7(243) Sean Donnelly T Tulane - Went to camp with the Giants. Presently a free agent.

I think Jerry's approach to the QBs is this - If the guy we like falls to 4 we'll consider it but we're not making any effort to make it happen in trade. If that doesn't happen we'll probably see a mid round pick used on a guy like Prescott or Brissett. (Kept from March notes)

I believe Jerry is comfortable at RB. We may not see one taken this year. It would have to be a value choice if we do. I don't believe we'll walk into the war room on Thursday with RB on our mind. I mocked it because I would do it now. I don't believe they will. Elliott is special so maybe that trumps all in their mind. We shall see.

Having said that, I think the needs most pressing to frick and frack when the commish walks to the podium on Thursday will be DE and CB. We lost two DEs in the offseason with Hardy gone and Gregory suspended and clearly not trustworthy. DeMarcus Lawrence also had back surgery in the offseason and now he too is going to miss 4 games on a suspension. The team clearly wants to move on from Brandon Carr or at least cut his salary. Claiborne really got a one year flyer to salvage his career in Dallas. Scandrick is coming off a major injury. This will be the primary focus of our draft. I expect both positions to be addressed within the first 3 or 4 picks.

I can't wait to see Lionel Vital in our war room and look forward to reading the Lionel Vital is secretly running this team threads in the future once the McClay angle runs it's course. Shout out to Duane Allman. A fixture in our war room for many years.

Wouldn't it be nice to actually have a productive day 3? Somebody explain to me how a team can be so inept in the 4th thru 7th rounds yet pretty decent in UDFA. Is it because the Jones twins stop caring by that point?

--

We're one week away. My excitement level is at an all time low for the draft. Love the overall process as much as ever but the prospects for Dallas are a foregone conclusion. I tell it like I see it and I see the team has already made a fatal mistake and, to make things worse, lost him to a division rival. If I'm right, we are going to regret it.

But don't let me damper your enthusiasm. We could very well be a few more cornerbacks away from finally getting our swagger back and, damn it, we will get those cornerbacks next week.

Enjoy the draft.

Go Cowboys.

Jerry: Our bank account is not bulging and need a Money Bell Cow.
Steven: Well, QB is not there after the 1st and 2nd picks.
Jerry: I have been measuring the back of jerseys and we need that perfect catchy name on the back that everyone needs to buy.
Steven: Needs to not be to long, easy to say, easy to see on TV.
Jerry: I got it! After doing a lot of measuring and having the advertising department look though some catchy names, I have it!!
Steven: OK, time is money, what is it?
Jerry: RAMSEY, we can sell a million of them at $99 a piece and make MILLIONS.
Steve: OK, what about a Superbowl?
Jerry: What is a Super Bowl???

Great mock. Duke is AMAZING but dumber than bricks. I want Elliot at 4.

There are strong odds that Duke is a lost cause and a wasted pick. I'm just willing to roll the dice that late with four 6th rounders.

A safety is much more acceptable for me at 4 than a cornerback. I'll take Ed Reed over Darrelle Revis any day.

JMO, but that's a bad comp. If you were to rank the top safeties and the top CBs in separate lists, Reed would be much closer to the top, than Reed. There's a legit argument to put Reed #1 all time, up there with Rod Woodson, Ronnie Lott and a few others. Revis is not in the argument for #1

Respectable top 50 despite your hatred for players in the secondary. If the draft went according to your mock I would be ecstatic.

I just cant believe after that abomination of football we saw without Romo (1-11), that we then preceded to do absolutely nothing to address it.

Signed no free agents, traded for nobody, and now have virtually no chance to get a top of the line QB in the draft (Dak, seriously?)

Its like everybody in the entire organization is just pretending last year never happened and we are coming off a 12-4 season........Its just crazy.

The fact that the only QB on the roster right now besides Romo is Kellen freaking Moore tells me this organization doesn't have a clue about how to put a successful team together. Maybe that is why we have missed the playoffs 5 of the last 6 seasons, we are becoming the Browns.:(

Take the four very best DBs in the history of the league, put them on the same defense in today's NFL, and they would have minimal success with no pass rush.

A good pass rush can make a bad secondary be servicable. The opposite does not apply.

not really. Seattle prior to adding Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett were average at best in the sack department and still were one of the better secondary's, despite only 2 of those guys being elite. Have a great front four, but have a secondary of Mario Edwards, Alan Ball, Roy Williams and Pat Watkins and they'll get burned repeatedly. yes, I think the front 4 > the back 4, but you can not have an entire unit be bad and hope to succeed.

Zeke is who I want most and Braxton Miller is also my pet cat!! Did we just become best friends?

We were literally hopeless without a QB. Either the team is in serious denial (possible) or they fully intend to draft a QB next week

There are strong odds that Duke is a lost cause and a wasted pick. I'm just willing to roll the dice that late with four 6th rounders.

Louisiana scouts out of high school thought that Duke was a better wide receiver prospect than Odell and Jarvis. Not that he's on that level but he is great.

Well at the risk of you regurgitating stats at me I don't know if I agree with that thought process.

What about cornerback? Convince me Jalin Ramsey would be so much better than a CB we could get in the 3rd or 4th round. Or explain to me why Joey Bosa would be so much better in Dallas than a mid round end.

I don't think you can look at it that way because the league is littered with quality mid round picks across the board. You'd be bypassing all positions thinking you can get a comparable player later.
With this team though, RB isn't like those positions, because this offensive line will turn an average back into a great one. Now, maybe that means it will turn a great one into a koo-koo, nutty, super one. But as long as we're fielding a below-average pass defense, it won't matter.

I'm not crazy about the guys you mentioned, but whomever the team has rated as their top two defenders, one of them is guaranteed to be there. That's assuming we can't find a trade-down partner, which would be the real jackpot.

Braxton Miller is being overrated. People want to knock guys like Fuller and Coleman for not being great route runners and yet Miller is even rawer than those two.

I wouldn't hate Ramsey if we put him at SS to pair w/Jones but know the team will put him at CB first. I would trade down personally but understand the Elliott pick to give Romo one more legitimate shot. Would rather take (S) Joseph @ 34 and Elliott in the 1st if we go that route.

Great write up Risen and appreciate the effort it took to present that. You know you some college players I'll give ya that.

Ramsey/Bosa aren't general blue chippers though Ramsey is a top notch athlete; both limited by position question marks; Bosa strictly @ LE/maybe some nickle DT, and Ramsey @ CB/S. Trade down, but get my boy Joseph so we don't have Church trying to play catch up every passing play. Starting to worry as some others have mentioned that all the hype around Joseph may push him into the late 1st. That would kinda suck:D In that case, take Todd if still available @ 34.

Who do you like in the 1st if we do trade down?

Lawson or Lynch if still there in slight trade back. If trade back into late 1st (25 range) to gain another 1st next year/bounty, Joseph would be my first pick and Todd @ 34 (my bias towards Joseph is obvious admittedly). There are other Safety prospects that make sense just think he's the best modern SS you can find in the draft. Ramsey may be better in the long term coverage wise but doubt the big plays would start in his rookie year when compared to Joseph.

The only guy left that is remotely considered a possible franchise QB is Lynch...............the Daks and Conners of the draft are projects at best.

If we don't draft Lynch, we got Kellen Moore and some mid-round developmental guy...............that does not feel me with confidence.

Starting to smell Lynch at 4 tbh...whiffed on Wentz, take your fall back. Not sure Lynch is worth the #4 but would understand the DAL FO logic behind it.
