My Free Safety

As much as I want to see BerryO on the field nailing guys, we really need a Free Safety that can cover deep. Having a free safety we can depend on in coverage will allow Roy to come on blitzes and shake things up. If we've got two bruisers at safety, we'll be running a big risk in coverage, I'd think.

Not as much as you'd think though ... it takes away the middle of the field if you have two guys that can hit. Fear is a beautiful thing ...

The 2003 season when our d was #1 ... guess what?

We had two SS types playing out there ...

We don't need a "FS type" ... K.Davis sure isn't the exact FS type.

If the guy can hit and play the box as well as he was last night then who cares who plays FS or SS ...

If both Roy and Justin have the ability to hit guys and make plays like Berrialt was last night, then it gives us more versatility with the defense ...

If I'm Bill, I start Justin right next to Roy.
I like this kid JB, but we dont need him and Roy both letting people catch the ball in front of them for 10 yard gains, then look to blow them up. We need a guy who can cover and make plays. JMO :)

Barialt showed some flashes last night. I think he's probably moved ahead of I. Reese.

He's always around the football and has a knack for making plays.

Agreed in front of Reese ...

But not Davis, eh?

We had Darren Woodson playing out there.

There is a difference between Darren Woodson and Justin Beriault.

I'm not saying its a completely bad idea, I'd like to give it a few looks from time to time. However, there's no comparing BerryO and Woodson, which is what you're saying.

It's like Commanders fans saying "Hey, we don't have a number one receiver, but guess who else doesn't...the patriots".

Same situation, completely different talent.

I know it's still early, but it now seems we've got two guys (Davis and Beriault) who both may end up being pretty good.

And to think a few weeks ago, there were some who said that our situation at Safety (other than Roy) was a "trainwreck."

I was one of them ... but not anymore ...

I know. But Darren Woodson was a college linebacker converted to safety ...

And who cares what round someone is drafed in if they're making plays. That gets entirely too much credence as far as I'm concerned.

And trust me, I'm of the opinion that D. Woodson is the greatest to play the game. I'm not quite making that comparison just yet to say it mildly, but it's a different D altogether. So, I'd expect to have some different players with different skill levels.

I just like Barialts skill level. Given that he is from a small school, I would only expect him to step up and improve.

What are our other options?

I am in partial agreement. While it would be nice to have a FS that can cover the deep ball, our defense may be more geared for two SS. For instance, say Ware and the rest of our defense starts to put some pressure on the QB, the QB will have to get rid of the ball sooner, ie. slants. This leads the receivers into no-mans land, the area between the OLB and the safety where he is sure to get popped. In the past with our lack of pressure, you could have Ed Reed manning deep and it wouldn't matter because the QB would have time to find the open man. Those times have changed.

Not yet. He's in a tuff situation now because he needs to rest his knee but can't really afford to miss any practices or playing time.

I see. And I agree. But only because of his injury ...

I haven't given up on K.Davis yet, but this guy is going to be a better player IMO than K. Davis.

Ask the CBs how much they would appreciate both safeties in the box. D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R.

HAHAHAHAA

Wait till Keith gets some experience at the position. Right now hes focused on "not getting beat" and "restraining/containing aggressiveness." When he gets used to that, his real talent will come out. I think of him right now in "Demarcus Ware mode" (The Arizona version) when he gets some experience, it will be Seattle mode. just wait, and have some patience, hes already showing improvement from game one to game two.

I agree with that. Davis kind of had that same Demarcus Ware Deer in the Headlights look in game one, but was very much more comfortable this game. I still think he has ability, he just makes you bite your nails because he will take a chance here and there.

But I think he will catch up with the game and learn where to be.

Crown ... I didn't say put both safeties in the box ...

And I agree, that would be a disaster ...

But that is what they both are - box players. Roy is alright in pass coverage, but he belongs closer to the LOS. Bariault is even more like that. I would trust Roy in coverage more than I would Bariault, but I also trust Davis more as well.

I like Bariault as the backup to Roy more than FS.
