A hat tip to Bob Hayes and Jday. Two guys that write the best stream of consciousness threads here. I am going to do a shortened version on a change in philosophy I am undergoing. This is going to be hard but perhaps a cathartic moment for me.

I am beginning to see the good in Jerry outweighing the bad in Jerry.

Like an aircraft carrier turning I am beginning to come around on him. As a GM he is a disaster. His record speaks for itself. No other GM outside of Cincinnati would have survived the last 20 years of mediocrity. As an Owner / GM he is also a disaster. Brand is number one with Jerry not Football. The conflict between owner and GM being one in the same has stained the culture in Dallas. That’s the bad.

Jerry is a great business man. Great. He is also an incredibly loyal guy. Ex players, almost to a man, love the guy. He welcomes them with open arms. He also seems to be very gracious offering his business advice. A recent example was Jerry investing in Jaylon Smith’s sun glasses company. I bet he is a great dad to his kids. Has given them great jobs and spends a ton of time with his family. Bet his grandkids think he is the coolest guy in the world. He is arguably one of the top 3 most important owners in the game. That means something considering those circles. Most of all I bet Jerry is a blast to hang around with. Funny man. Millions of stories. Likes a beer or two. I would pay a lot of money to drink some beers with him.

Will McClay’s influence has really helped the roster. I trust that guy and so does Jerry which is huge. Jerry’s loyalty to Garrett is a mistake but it is nice for Jason Garrett.

I haven’t come full circle on Jerry yet but it is getting close.

Has anyone’s opinion changed on him over the past couple years?

Gruden is overrated.. People love the personality but Xs and Os along with player evaluation is pretty terrible.

Brian Billick has a ring but football common sense tells me Andy Reid is better then Billick.

Reid is great. He doesn’t have a ring but it’s clear he can coach at the highest level.

I don’t think it’s subjective to anyone that Andy Reid is a great coach. Just people that want to ignore the obvious and be a hater.

do great coaches suck at clock management? Because Reid had several major screw ups that cost his team games.... yet here we are with.... Reid is GREAT!!!!!

and "Gruden is overrated." bahahahhahahah, again, subjective, but since you say he is overrated, and Reid is great.... I guess that makes it so.

My point is that many coaches get labeled as great then when they try to win with a different qb, or different team.... they not so great ala George Seifert.

Oh me too. Especially when it comes time for me to buy the round that includes J/W Blue. You figure they are roughly 35 bucks a shot and two 6 dollar beers, we're looking at 82 bucks a round. Now while he probably has that in his cup holder, I have to work over 2 hours for it.

I didn't know what else to write since you covered most of it in your post. I never really had a dislike for Jerry like some do here. I realize he could at times be reckless with the team, but I always thought winning was a high priority for him. He's just been bad at it for the last few decades.

I used to be frustrated with the fact that Jerry had all the resources to provide us with the best coaching money could buy but continued to hire mediocre guys and family to do jobs they were not qualified for along with continually feeling the need to gamble with our 2nd rd picks on injured players

Then I just accepted the fact it was his crazy expensive toy that was no fun to have if he didnt have complete control . He has to feel in his heart that he is totally responsible for any success the team has or it just dosent count in his world .

Lucky for us he has some better people around him that he trusts for advice and he is giving Garrett help since he wont move on from him . Playoffs are all I hope for now but with the current Roster and an OC with no tape, we could get a bit farther .

I still feel his decisions on quality coaching have held us back for a long time but I understand what he is thinking and try not to hold it against him. Thats as positive as I can get on Jerry till we get to an NFC Championship game

This Jason Garrett experiment has gone on far longer then it should have and we’ve wasted some talented teams and careers because of him.

That is on Jerry.

I applaud him for McClay but having a head coach that doesn’t hurt his ego has offset any of the other positive things he has done with our roster.

Well said.

Food for thought:

If Jerry never made his most important hire in Jimmy Johnson, this team might very well be looking at 41 years since the last Super Bowl.

Jerry has been an excellent owner and representative of the NFL.

Jerry has been a terrible GM for the Dallas Cowboys.

I like Jones, would be fun to hang around with and hear some stories but as good as he has been for this team, he has been just as equally bad.

Well, you are talking out both ends of your ***. Jerry has ALWAYS been about winning. He’s certainly made mistakes with his HC’s but he did hire Parcells. He wants to win more than you or I combined.

Good post WJ. I appreciate what you said about Jerry’s talent for business and his loyalty. He is certainly a great businessman and I’ve always admired his love of his family and his devotion to people in the organization.

BUT....

Until he proves he can put together a team that makes at least a deep run in the playoffs, I will continue to see him as a great businessman, good father and family man, and a lousy GM. Nothing would make me happier than for Jerry to prove he can finally bring a Lombardi back after two plus decades. Lord knows he should have learned by now that doing everything “his way” in this century is not the way to get some championship hardware again.

My feelings haven't changed.

He's the #1 reason my favorite team hasn't even been to an NFC title game in 20+ years because he can't be fired. And oh joy, knowing that his replacement is his son who is even less qualified for the job that he is, and is cheap as hell to boot.

The guy has every resource imaginable to put the best product on the field, in the coaching staff, and in the front office, but he fails miserably every season purely because of ego.

But let's be happy we're basically the Lions. Hell, we're not even the Lions, because their GM can be fired!

and as great as Andy Reid is and the fact hes coached for much longer than JG, he still has zero rings.
Yeah, but (other than Parcells) Andy Reid has more playoff wins than all the Cowboys coaches this century.

I’ve always been a jerry supporter and haven’t agreed with you on that but takes a big person to admit that they are starting to see some positive where they only saw negative before.

Kudos to you whyjerry
So if I say Garrett doesn't suck, will you give me kudos too?

And I can't believe people still fall for the 'Jerry wants to win' horsecrap.

Of course he 'wants to win', that's as useless a statement about someone as 'he loved to laugh'.

You don't get a cookie for 'wanting to win'. You hire the best possible people for the job, let them actually DO the job, and hold them accountable if they don't.

What you don't do is waste decades trying to do it yourself so you can get some elusive 'credit'. Credit, by the way, you will never fully receive because people know you are so incompetent at your job that any success you have is a fluke anyway.

Jerry wants to win and I think he’s doing his best to get us there.

But I can’t explain his loyalty to Garrett. His ego gets in the way of his will to win.

I admire your fluidity. In the face of changing evidence it makes no sense to be rigid in your opinion.

It's easy to be so biased you become blind to change.

The FO has turned things around in the last few years and we are beginning to reap the rewards. This is a tough young team and should remain a contender for awhile.

Yeah, it’s sad how some can’t get past the “Jerry Hate”. I’m sure glad I have friends that don’t judge me by my past. People make mistakes. The smart ones learn from them.

Nobody here "hates" Jerry, at least l hope not. I hate having him as a GM. I hate that he couldn't put his EGO aside and let Jimmy run the show. I hate how he didn't have the guts to meet with Tom Landry before firing him, but l don't hate Jerry.

That being said, we're not talking about judging Jerry for a couple past mistakes. He's blundered his way thru the past 20+ years and pretty much pissed away some players careers. It has taken him way too long to learn from his past mistakes. But "hate" is a word used too loosely when it comes to Jerry...

I've always said, Jerry doesn't mind spending the money. He just doesn't know how to spend it. Personally I think he loves his game and wants to win
