My long held distaste for Jerry is changing

Along with many others here, my harsh opinions of Jerry have softened considerably. This is largely because he has softened his "jocks and socks" policy of micro-managing everything related to the Cowboys. He has allowed Stephen much more responsibility in matters of contract management. He's also stepped back and is allowing Will McClay to exercise great control of player evaluation and procurement.

Jerry's long retention of Garrett, as he has done, isn't to his credit. JG simply leans too far in the category of weak than horrible. Altogether too often, he'll play the game to avoid losing, as opposed to winning. This seems especially so in the last half, when an aggressive approach is needed. We'll see what occurs this year, when the level of difficulty demands good coaching and Jerry ultimately might be faced with a crucial decision. ;)

I love Jerry. He’s a Cowboy God. He’s certainly made some blunders signing TO, trading 2 #1’s for Galloway, Row Williams trade but he learned from those disasters and has been stellar since. The thing about Jerry, which many here don’t get, is that he wants to win. He wants to win so much it brings him to tears sometimes. I love that.

A hat tip to Bob Hayes and Jday. Two guys that write the best stream of consciousness threads here. I am going to do a shortened version on a change in philosophy I am undergoing. This is going to be hard but perhaps a cathartic moment for me.

I am beginning to see the good in Jerry outweighing the bad in Jerry.

Like an aircraft carrier turning I am beginning to come around on him. As a GM he is a disaster. His record speaks for itself. No other GM outside of Cincinnati would have survived the last 20 years of mediocrity. As an Owner / GM he is also a disaster. Brand is number one with Jerry not Football. The conflict between owner and GM being one in the same has stained the culture in Dallas. That’s the bad.

Jerry is a great business man. Great. He is also an incredibly loyal guy. Ex players, almost to a man, love the guy. He welcomes them with open arms. He also seems to be very gracious offering his business advice. A recent example was Jerry investing in Jaylon Smith’s sun glasses company. I bet he is a great dad to his kids. Has given them great jobs and spends a ton of time with his family. Bet his grandkids think he is the coolest guy in the world. He is arguably one of the top 3 most important owners in the game. That means something considering those circles. Most of all I bet Jerry is a blast to hang around with. Funny man. Millions of stories. Likes a beer or two. I would pay a lot of money to drink some beers with him.

Will McClay’s influence has really helped the roster. I trust that guy and so does Jerry which is huge. Jerry’s loyalty to Garrett is a mistake but it is nice for Jason Garrett.

I haven’t come full circle on Jerry yet but it is getting close.

Has anyone’s opinion changed on him over the past couple years?
my opinion of jerry jones has not changed. if he was not so worried about his ego we would have a quality head coach and maybe been to few more playoff games in the last twenty three years. the bottom line is all that he is concerned about is making sure he gets all of the credit.

Well, you are talking out both ends of your ***. Jerry has ALWAYS been about winning. He’s certainly made mistakes with his HC’s but he did hire Parcells. He wants to win more than you or I combined.

I never said he wasnt about winning just that he must be in full control and hires people he is comfortable with rather than the best at there profession . Hence it makes winning much harder than it needs to be

Every GM hires coaches he thinks he’s comfortable with. That’s why they interview.

Im a bigger Cowboy fan than you ever thought of being . I have lived in Eagles country all my life and hate their very existence . I have put up with more flack than you can imagine.

Heck you live in Texas where everybody loves the Cowboys . Try being a Cowboys fan at old Vets stadium .

Just because I question the qualifications of Jerry and the people he hires dosent make me any less a Cowboys fan

The only idiot you’re trying to convince is yourself. Your past actions are much more powerful than this post.

I used to be frustrated with the fact that Jerry had all the resources to provide us with the best coaching money could buy but continued to hire mediocre guys and family to do jobs they were not qualified for along with continually feeling the need to gamble with our 2nd rd picks on injured players

Then I just accepted the fact it was his crazy expensive toy that was no fun to have if he didnt have complete control . He has to feel in his heart that he is totally responsible for any success the team has or it just dosent count in his world .

Lucky for us he has some better people around him that he trusts for advice and he is giving Garrett help since he wont move on from him . Playoffs are all I hope for now but with the current Roster and an OC with no tape, we could get a bit farther .

I still feel his decisions on quality coaching have held us back for a long time but I understand what he is thinking and try not to hold it against him. Thats as positive as I can get on Jerry till we get to an NFC Championship game

Finding a quality coach isn't as simple as paying top dollar. You have to be able to accurately identify that coach and you have to give him enough time to make his system work. Unfortunately there is no set time table and everyone is afraid of firing the next Belicheck. Just like nobody wants to hire the next Chip Kelly.

Most feel Garrett should've had more success by now, but division championships on a budding team go a long ways towards job stability.

I must say, I've grown to respect him quite a bit for a variety of reasons. I felt he was egotistical and all. However, I'm starting to realise that the negative things said about him are quite overblown. I was watching his interview on two business networks via YouTube, and he seems as sharp as a tack. Business-wise, he's brilliant, and I think he's probably a lot smarter football-wise than people give him credit for. DeMarcus Ware is an example of this. And I respect him for being as loyal as he is. He seems like a rather good chap, all in all. And, as said, a magnificent businessman and sharp as a tack.

Gruden is overrated.. People love the personality but Xs and Os along with player evaluation is pretty terrible.

Brian Billick has a ring but football common sense tells me Andy Reid is better then Billick.

Reid is great. He doesn’t have a ring but it’s clear he can coach at the highest level.

I don’t think it’s subjective to anyone that Andy Reid is a great coach. Just people that want to ignore the obvious and be a hater.

Yup. Exactly, and I think Gruden rode Dungy's coattails in Tampa.

Mine has, I use to really Like Jerry Jones as an owner, Now I love Jerry as an GM and Owner, he is the best Owner/GM in the league he always wants to win, he always want to keep his team relevant and he always wants to win and is always thinking of winning first. He is loyal to his players especially his playmakers and game changers.

Just curious but will you be getting your double zero Jerry Jones jersey in white or blue?
