Week 4 My Meaningless Thoughts On the Game...
Yakuza Rich Blog

- 'I feel like I just gave birth...to an accountant.' - Thornton Mellon 'Back To School.'

- The offensive line seems to have real problems just as it crosses the 50 yard line, particularly in the first half, and we also seem to have trouble getting in the play when we cross the 50 yard line as well. Just something I noticed about the team.

- There is a perfect situation to set an example here, something the organization sorely is lacking, especially since Parcells has left. When Roy Williams comes back from injury, let's bench Crayton and start Miles Austin. Crayton was a nightmare out there today and Miles had his breakout game. You reward hard working guys who keep their mouthshut, especially when they have 10 catches, 250 yards and 2 TD's. You don't keep rewarding the loud mouth who plays a whale of a terrible game which included 2 fumbles.

- Give it up fans, Spencer played a really good game today. And I think he's been doing quite well this year, just hasn't been able to finish plays. He's really on the verge of having a big game, IMO.

- I'm getting sick and tired of people saying we don't have any leaders on this team. Of course we do. Tell me that Choice isn't a leader. Or Ware. Or Ratliff. Or Marion. Etc, etc. The problem is that we have a complete lack of discipline and too many coach killers. The appeal of this team to non-Cowboys fans who look at them objectively is that there is talent on this team. For instance, not many Cowboys players had a bad game today and a lot of Cowboys players had really good games today. But when Crayton can't catch and turns the ball over and when Flo looks horrendous and they commit 13 penalties, you're now making a game that should've been a blowout into an OT victory against a team that has won a total of 6 times in almost the past 2 1/2 seasons. We need a coaching staff that instills discipline and can still be smart with the X's and O's.

- Flo was getting beat all game long by Tamba Hali and had his usual penalties. Yes, I'm looking forward to the end of the Flozell Adams era after this season.

- Ugh, the officiating is so bad right now and it was again for both teams and it's been going on around the league. As I type this up the refs just missed a PI call on the Patriots claiming it was 'by rule incidental contact.' No, that's not 'by rule incidental contact' when the defensive back is not looking for the ball and the WR is. This is particularly troublesome this year when it seems like the refs really don't know the rules to the game. People may laugh this off, but I vividly remember the officiating being the same problem in the 2005 regular season when people also laughed it off and it came back to rear its ugly head in the postseason and was on full display in the Seattle vs. Pittsburgh game. It's funny that when one punt in a preseason game happened to hit the videoboard at the new Cowboys Stadium that it was deemed 'an embarassment' to the game, but the lousy officiating sinking to new depths is supposedly okay.

- Give it up to Pat Watkins who played pretty well today as well.

- I'll give Garrett credit for finding ways to get all 3 of the RB's involved, but he needs to understand that these tailbacks tend to have 'hot hand' and he really needed to go to Choice today who obviously had the 'hot hand' early on today.

- We are now up to 27 games. That is...in the last 27 games we have had ONE interception from our safeties.

- Romo played quite well today and it's obvious that he is protecting the ball when it comes to being sacked (well, except for last week on the blitz by Denver). Two things I gleaned about him today are...1) He was accurate today and has been accurate in 2 out of 5 games, which leads me to believe his accuracy issues are purely mechanical, so a good QB coach should help with that. 2) I *think* he works best with very fast WR's, judging by his production with Owens and his production today with Miles Austin's first start at WR.

- Lots of poor discipline on display today and I kept thinking this looked like a 5-11 or 6-10 team that had the most talent that wasn't on I-R of any 5-11 or 6-10 team I can remember. A win is a win and I want to get my hopes up, but tough to get up for a team that has gone 4-12, 2-14 and now 0-5 in the past 3 seasons. We're too inconsistent with too many of our personnel and facets of the game. Our QB is inconsistent, our safeties are inconsistent, our O-Coordinator is inconsistent, our tackling is inconsistent. A bye next week and I believe we'll get up for the Falcons at home after the bye, but can we put some consistent play and avoid dumb mistakes? So far this year I'd say no.

He had a bit of a rough game against TB and then was inconsistent against the G-Men, but other than that he's been very good. But he somehow missed that pick against Denver and people really got on him for that. He still played really well in that game. Sometimes stuff like that happens, but I'm pleased with his play. They could spell him a little more.

Good post, best i have read tonight.

Romo did look better even with all the drops. Austin has moved in front of Crayton, the coaches need to see that. He was explosive today...something Romo needs. #76 was disgusting. Happy with the win, but lots to worry about for the bye week.

We don't always see eye to eye, but I too have noticed Watkins playing better lately. I had noticed when he wasn't starting that he was actually making some plays when he was in the game. I saw him blunder today though, but overall he is far more solid than he was.

I can't even begin to fathom what Ratliff is doing. I've never seen a NT do what he does. How in hell does a 300lbs NT jump over an OL and then block a kick. That is just plain stupid! Not to mention seeing a NT explode at least once a game into a backfield to make a TFL. I mean, to power your way back is one thing, but this guy fires out like a bottle rocket! Only DEs and OLBs are supposed to be able to do that.

While everyone is in love with Austin and I know this guy has some serious tools, I think people should temper their view of him. What he did today was special, but don't expect anything close to that every week. I mean, half of what he produced today is more than TO produced on average for his career. I will say though, I'm in full agreement. When Roy returns, it's Crayton that should sit. When he fumbled that second time, he would not even have seen the field if I were coaching. I would have taken his helmet and had it locked in a safe. You just do not do that.

As for Adams, I've always been an avid supporter and defender of him. I must say, something is wrong with him this year. It's almost as if he hasn't recovered from his injury last year. He is consisently getting beat wide. If he tries to compensate and the guy reverses and takes an inside move, he is toast too. For this reason alone and when it look like the Cowboys were going to fold and lose (giving up the TD after Austin scored with 2 minutes) I was thinking, maybe the Cowboys should pack it up and get a high pick so they can draft a LT.

Of course I slapped my self for being stupid. Anyhow, not all great tackles come in the top picks anyhow. The Cowboys just need to figure out how to draft OL.

I'm not liking Garrett much lately. Barber is clearly still aling, yet they play him over Choice to an extreme today. While I agree that Barber is far better than Choice, but if Barber is having trouble running, use your ****ing healthy back!!! This man is way to green to be a OC in the NFL. Man, the Ravens and Falcons lucked out that he rejected their offers. They ended up in very good shape. I doubt they would be playing this well with Garrett running the show.

Again, as always. The Cowboys have issues come game time. It's always something. I'm completely against 100% (make that 99%) firing a HC during the season, but that 1% correction would have been if the Cowboys lost today. Wade just doesn't know how to prepare (or control) a team. 13 ****ing penalties? Thats you Wade. Your inability to control your players. If a player can't get it right, sit his ***! You should have sat Crayton after the second fumble!

Joe D. Thank you for coming to Dallas. You ARE the MAN! :toast:

Romo's play has been the most overlooked aspect of today's game, in my opinion. It seemed he finally discovered a balance between gunslinger (i.e. his third down pass to Austin) and managing the game.

Romo had 350 yards today, but remember, about 100 of those yards were Austin YAC. He was much more accurate today than last week, but I saw some bad from him today too.

Romo wasn't great today, but he was far better than last week. Last week he couldn't hit the side of a barn from 10 feet away even if nobody was without 6 miles of him.

Thats because he is not really an NT. More of a DE who can play any D Line position and excel. I still say he is 12 sack a year guy at RE in a 4-3. That guy Suh on Nebraska reminds me alot of Ratliff.

As I recall, Steve Young's entire HOF career was predicated on YAC.;)

He is a 3-4 DE, when I said DE, I was talking about a 4-3 DE. About a 30-50lbs difference. What Ratlif does at 300lbs is remarkable. It defies physics!

Thats what happens when your two WRs are TO and Rice! :laugh2:

Two without question First ballot HoFers. (though TO might get shafted by the media due to his run-ins with them)

btw, don't discount Steve Young. The man was a great QB in his own right.

Good read Yakuza. Thanks for reminding my how lousy Flo was today. Not holding and false start lousy. But protection lousy. He was a bid stupid stature out there.

Young was 3 and 16 with the Bucs and considered a bust at the time. He was 15 and 24 after 7 years in the NFL. I just find it ironic that you would be so critical of Romo, especially after a good game.

Young was playing for the Bucs. The Bucs were horrible from the beginning until Dungy started coaching them. (Coaching is extremely important, and as you can see Jerry hasn't always picked a good coach)

Romo played well today, but he was far from perfect. I'm not down on his play today. It was far better than last week.

Just to think, I got chastised for saying I was looking forward to the end of the Flozell era, only 2 weeks ago!

...Colinshaw's knee-jerk answer to insert Garrett as HC mid-season and your observations, many i share, makes the issue moot...

...Garrett's stock is falling fast and he'll be lucky to get out of Dallas as a position coach under his current trajectory...the highest paid coordinator in the NFL?...we are a long way from 2007...the guy's living off some stale bread...

...Ware had two sacks today but he's not right...his arm can be seeing curiously dangling close to his body on the sidelines at times...

...Brooking is a real leader and Ratliff just continues to amaze...he's a shoe-in for the pro bowl later this year...Spencer keeps grinding and it looks like it may soon come to some fruition...

...Flozell Adams is a liability to the offense now and any injuries on the offensive line could have repurcussions where Tony Romo is concerned...ask Aaron Rodgers how it feels with nobody guarding the back door...better yet, ask Tom Brady, who lost Matt Light today and struggled as a result, committing the final miscue in an overtime loss at Denver...

...Wade Phillips is running out the clock...at least that's how i see it...game management, discipline, accountability, anticipation and standards of excellence are values that seem lost on this guy...the Cowboys can't get TO a superbowl let alone win one with him at the helm...the evidence is in...

...Alan Ball caused much mayhem and consternation with his dumb, ill-advised rocket launch on third and 26 late in the game, when a simple tackle would've sufficed...a small microcosm of what ails the Cowboys right now...

Good observation. I thought this was Romo's best game of the season. He was much more consistent than the game against the Bucs.
