DAL plays this year out with Dak and Tony

If he wants to stay he takes a huge paycut and if he wants to leave he still gets paid but we don't get killed on the cap and get the cap space when we need it in the Spring......if we trade him before June 1st there is nothing we can do about the 19.6m cap hit but at least it will be off the books forever

Next Spring DAL signs Romo to a new 3yr/21m contract.....they take the 14m he is owed for 2017 and guarantees it plus another 1m for a total of 15m guaranteed ...... that comes in the form of a 1m base salary in 2017, a 12m option bonus in 2017 and a 2m base salary in 2018 .... that reduces his cap hit from 24.7m to 15.7m

Option bonus 12m due Sept 1st
................Base...+.....old bonus..+..new OB..=...Cap hit.............old Cap
2017------ 1m...............10.7m..........4m.............15.7m................24.7m
2018*------2m................5.7m...........4m.............11.7m................25.2m
2019*------6m................3.2m...........4m.............13.2m................23.7m

*if he is traded, salary jumps to 10m for both 2018-19 and he gets 250k per game roster bonuses

That makes it a 2yr/15m deal if we keep him as the back-up

It means he makes 3yr/41m if we trade him with 23m guaranteed
We can trade him anytime after June 1st 2017 and get top price since the new team will have control for up to 3 seasons......his 13m compensation for 2017 is very fair and we get immediate and long-term cap relief

Interesting idea in Romo. I'm not into cap stuff (it makes my head hurt) but what do you think are the chances of Romo wanting to take that pay cut in order to stay here even if he was the starter?

I am not sure I see it.

Interesting idea.
But he has a dallas cowboys basketball court with a slide in it in his new home.

What happens if he wants to stay... And doesn't want to take a pay cut? He kinda holds the cards...

Not at all....none of his scheduled 14m in salary is guaranteed.......DAL could cut him and save 14m on the cap

If he wants to stay he has to take a huge cut, he has no choice

He's guaranteed his contract money. It's a small sliver of people who would renegotiate to give his money back, no matter what.....just saying. Put yourself in his shoes.

none of his contract left is guaranteed.......this new deal would guarantee him 15m if he stays and 23m if he is traded

Under your scenario:

What's the dead money the Cowboys have to absorb if he's traded in the middle of 2017?

What is it if he is cut after 2017?

Interesting,,, most QBs of Romo's caliber would not care to be a back up, at all. It's hard to imagine him even considering it. I think the year will play out however it does and:
1) if Romo leads the team to a Superbowl victory he will ride off into the sunset.
2) if Romo plays like a superstar but doesn't get the Superbowl ring he'll be back next year as the starter.
3) if neither of those happen he will retire.

What is it if he is cut after 2017?
If traded him in the middle of 2017 after we paid the 12m option bonus on Sept 1st the dead money would be 16.9m in 2018

that is the point of the late timing of the option bonus......if we pick it up it means we are committing to Romo for 2 years as the back-up for 2 yr/15m///paying the option bonus and then trading him would be
foolish unless we got a Herschel type return

if Romo was cut after 2017 it would be 9.7m in dead money in 2018 and 7.2m in 2019

Under my contract if Romo was traded before Sept 1st his cap charge would be 10.7m in 2017 and 8.9m in 2018....that is the ideal scenario if trading him.....the new team would be on the hook for 3yrs/41m with 23m guaranteed

15m reasons he would consider it

Assuming Romo would stay and be a backup which is highly highly unlikely for someone of his caliber. IMO if he doesn't get his job back this year Dallas will allow him to compete in the offseason, or he asks for his release.

Franchise QBs don't just accept being a backup come on now. I don't understand why people assume Romo just gives up without a fight. I'd be disappointed in him if that's what he did as he's always been a competitor. If he lost his job fair and square because he got beat out by a better player that's one thing. But he's injured and was 3-1 last year and 12-4 the year before. I don't see any scenario where Romo just accepts being a backup.

Romo is not a backup QB for any franchise in this league. He wouldn't sign with clubs who have established franchise QBs. Franchise QBs go where a Starting QB is needed.

If you think Romo is a "backup" QB then you're saying he isn't a franchise QB.

it really isn't up to him......DAL isn't paying him 54m over the next 3 years .....he has 0 guaranteed money left so he has no leverage...... if he wants to stay in DAL he needs to take a major pay cut

The way I set up his contract gives him a lot more money if he wants to start for someone else, 3yr/41m compared to 2yr/15m to stay and be QB2

If he retires DAL can go after at least 5m of his SB that was already paid and could subtract that from his one time dead money hit of 19.6m in 2017
