it really isn't up to him......DAL isn't paying him 54m over the next 3 years .....he has 0 guaranteed money left so he has no leverage...... if he wants to stay in DAL he needs to take a major pay cut

The way I set up his contract gives him a lot more money if he wants to start for someone else, 3yr/41m compared to 2yr/15m to stay and be QB2

If he retires DAL can go after at least 5m of his SB that was already paid and could subtract that from his one time dead money hit of 19.6m in 2017

Well he will ask for his release. There isn't a chance that Romo takes a pay cut and stays as a backup QB. IMO that's just pie in the sky wishful thinking. I wouldn't blame him for asking for his release after what he's given this franchise.

Romo isn't retiring and it's highly unlikely that Jerry will go after Romo's signing bonus. They would not jeopardize any future positions within the organization. Jerry is very fond of Romo I don't see under any circumstance that he would do that. If Romo asked for his release the boys would grant his request, no doubt about it. But all this talk about backup QB, retirement and going after him for money is all hogwash.

The only other way that I can think of that protects DAL is re-doing his deal but leaving his 2017 salary alone at 14m

DAL wouldn't get any immediate salary cap relief but they would cut his 2018 and 2019 salaries to 14m each

They would tell Romo that if they traded him his 2018 salary would become guaranteed
But if they didn't trade him 14m salary would be restructured and his 2018 salary would be 1m, all guaranteed

If he wants to retire then he can lower his contract to 1m in exchange for not going after his SB
That will give DAL immediate cap space until he officially retires post June 1st

The perceived QB situation before preseason would have been Romo starting and Dak somewhere else on the deoth chart, both making whatever their contract calls for.

Regardless of who starts, their salaries dont change, therefore, neither does the sum of their salaries.

Dak + Romo = Romo + Dak

Tony's salary is not an issue for the next two years. We keep them both because we can and until we can't.

This is all assuming Dak still progresses and continues to improve. If he hits a wall or defenses start figuring him out Romo isn't going anywhere and neither is his salary until the team absolutely knows Dak can carry the team.

What is the difference between being cut or released? It's all one in the same. No I think you greatly underestimate how he is perceived by Jones and Garrett and the club. They will want Romo at some point in the future to be apart of this franchise in some capacity. Football is in his blood he lives it. He has a future in this league as a coach it's obvious. Sorry they are not just going to trade Romo without his approval to where he goes he's not some mid level player or talent smh at this stuff. 6 games and people think that this franchise is just going to toss Romo or tell him he's a backup. lol do some of you really believe this? Well we can discuss Favre and why there was Favre day another time.

If Romo retired and they went after his signing bonuses it would absolutely change any future he had with the club. If they flat out traded Romo without his input it would flat out change any future he had with the club. I never said him willingly playing for another club would have an impact on his future with this organization in the future. I am saying that he would be bitter if they did the above that you stated, like suing him for his SB. You can't just merely talk numbers when discussing a 14 year veteran who has been the face of the franchise for the better part of a decade. He is the homegrown boy and the Jones are are very fond of him. That has to be taken into consideration
