My Take on Dez

i think he's a top 3 WR in this league and we are not using him properly. The coaching staff doesn't know how to develop WRs or maximize their talents. Dez needs more jump balls in the red zone and Dak needs to force him the ball when he's single covered. I think having him return punts will keep him engaged more
I think this is a "what have you done for me lately" situation... And right now he has not done much to warrant a top 3 or even 5... Arguably even top 10.

Some will argue he is not being used effectively or in the right way. I will be the first to acknowledge that my comprehension of the game would not allow me to evaluate that. There are some on this forum who do have that ability but I would suggest the vast majority are like me and cannot.

What is clear is that he has done nothing from a productivity standpoint to warrant the top three consideration.

You also think Romo is the second best QB in the league next to Tom Brady. Dez isn't even close to a top 3 receiver. He doesn't need more jump balls and the last thing Dak needs to be doing is forcing him the ball. Dez needs to learn how to run better routes and get open.

How many games did he miss?

Rookie QB who does not go deep.

on a team who can run the ball at will.....

All great points. I just don't think he's elite. I think Romo makes him look elite, but he doesn't get the separation others do, and he doesn't work the field like he should.

Dez has never been a great seperation guy.

Dez's trademark was to out leap and out muscle the DB or DB's covering him.
However, as I said before the season, his body will no longer allow him to contort himself and come crashing down to the ground ackwardly without paying a price.

The days of lobbing the deep ball to Dez are over.

If you want to get your money's worth from Dez you need to re-define his role to a possession guy. Learn from Witten how to push off and make the clutch third down catch and get away with it.

I said it before. In 2014, not only did Dez run over 200 go routes, but TWill did in this offense and they both were top 3 in terms of go routes among WRs. To add to this, Escobar was I think top 3 or top for tight ends in go routes among the league. And he wasn't our starting TE. That was the lack of variations this offense used in the passing game, meaning they were relying way too much on Romo to make things happen.

Further, the best CB of a team is covering the X receiver which is Dez and he often gets help over the middle, teams playing two deep. So the CB is basically defending go routes all the time as far as Dez is concerned, making it easier to defend the lack of variation.

You need a deadly accurate QB to hit Dez in these types of situations, aka Romo. You can't really argue it's because Dez can't run proper routes, when TWIll and Escobar were among top in the league in terms of these type of routes among WRs and TEs.

That's your explanation why Dez isn't having the same numbers than when he played with Romo in 2014.

The only real question is would anything change with Linehan and Romo this year, considering how much the offense changed in terms of play action and where they are attacking the field off of it with Dak.

All better than Dez. No way is he top 3

We're gonna put Mike Evans ahead of Dez, who is slower, and runs even fewer routes than Dez? We are a run first offense, and playing with a rookie QB. Dez isn't going to have a career year this year. Lol our fanbase, smh

And I agree he does not have some of the skills that others do, but I also maintain that he has a skill set that others do not which puts him in the category.

Dez is an average receiver with above average strength and ability to go get jump balls, but bottom quarter route running ability. He is less able to get separation than Jason Witten who is slower than molasses on a frigid day in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Forcing the ball to Dez because he can't get separation is a piss poor strategy. It puts the ball unnecessarily in harm's way, which is part of the reason Romo has been vilified for his interceptions.

I was on the fence about Dez in that he could arguably be a top 5 receiver, or not even top 10. I am no longer on that fence. He is not a top 20 receiver in the league currently. I say that not because of his stats, I say that because he is more of a liability to the team at this point than an asset, for the 70 million he is being paid.

Dez is really good. Only Romo knows how to make him look truly elite.

You have to pinpoint accurate with back-shoulder and high-point throws to utilize Dez' ability to catch balls in traffic. Otherwise, he's a pretty easy cover for cornerbacks.

He's too slow, and his routes are too poor, to use like a typical top receiver.

Even Romo left a lot on the table with Dez. Dez is excellent on the slant and impossible to cover on the jump ball. If Dez had Eli or Rivers as his QB he would have 2k more yards and 20 more TDs.

I have been saying for the last few years, we need a new WR's coach.
They do not seem to get enough separation. Beasley does a good part of the time. But the other WR's could get open more, IMO.
And open more down field as well..

Dez will always get criticized for the wrong things on here as well as the media. It will not change until we win a few SB's. Just as it did for Irvin.
Well JG likes who he has in all those position coaches, and they are RKG coaches !!!!!!! fight claw execute !!:flagwave:

yeah you have to throw a certain way to make it a jump ball, but there are all sorts of things they could do with jump ball to him
but I aint gonna hold my breath waiting to see it.

Who would have thought the league would ever catch up to us asking Dez to "Run to the buick" all damn game.

The problem isn't Dez's abilities, it's the complete lack of imagination (STILL!) over how to use him.

Geezus here we go again... Man Dez is on pace for 900 plus yards despite missing several games. Dak and Dez will continue to develop chemistry.
