I think they want to know how much he knows about defense.

1) What does this say to Jason Garrett?? "We love you Jason, but we don't know if we want you to be the guy. We MAY want you to be the guy, but maybe not if someone better is out there." I'm sure he understands that he needs more experience, but for cryin out loud, Al Davis just hired a 31 year old QB coach from the college ranks as his HC. I know, we're not Oakland, but have some stones Jerry. If you like the guy that much, pull the trigger.

maybe Garrett himself knows he might not be fully ready, and wants to take a couple yrs to tutor under someobdy else...also, maybe Garrett already knows who the HC is (if it isnt him) and they've all talked this out

2) What HC candidate with any promise is going to want to come here, when it seems like it's going to be Garrett's show in a few years, if not now? The only thing that makes sense is if a "retread" comes in as a stall tactic. Any young, promising candidates are pretty much out of the question now. Ron Rivera... "you are an intriguing possibility, but we already have your OC in place, and he's going to be the HC in the future. You want this job now?"

I covered this in another thread, but just because Garrett is being added now doesnt mean a potential new coach doesnt know about and hasnt signed off on it...you also have to take into the account the timing of everythng, its basically going to be impossible for a new coach to hire a complete new staff this yr...also, apparently everyone has forgot this but Jones himself stated one of the main reasons Zimmer and some other assistants didnt get contract extensions earlier was because Jones wanted the new coach to have the ability to pick new people

Look at it this way - it says to Garrett, "Jason, we are so enamored with your coaching ability and future, that we need to make a committment to you right now to make sure you don't go back to Miami. We may ultimately make you head coach, but as an organization we would not be doing our due diligence and doing right by our fans to make a HC hire without interviewing a few other qualified candidates."

Which says nothing about the league mandate that you interview at least one minority.

I know I'm a little late to the party, but this all has me a little confused and wary of what is to come.

So, we've hired JG as __________

The fact that we don't know what we've hired him as leads to so much instability it makes me dizzy.

Answer me these questions...

Sorry for the rant, I'm just a little perplexed and wanted some answers.
It just means we aren't going to name our HC based on Miami's timetable.

Garrett will have to live with that.
