My Vastly Different Take on the Romo INT

Terrance Williams: I have to work on being in right spots at right times. "The more I do that, the more chances he'll throw the ball to me."

Every "analyst" and announcer said it was Williams fault. Williams even knew it was his fault. Tony audibled because of the coverage for a quick slant to get some yards. He blew it. That's it

He admitted Williams ran the wrong route.. EVERYONE admits that. It just that it appears there were safer plays to run on 3rd and 11 vs audibling with seconds on the clock to a rookie.

So what should be the cutoff to do an audible? 5 seconds, 10 seconds, if you were the coach what rule would you set for the QB, so that he is handcuffed because you don't want him to change the play?

The QB is the general. He should have all options open to him to be successful, if that means he has to shoot a hand signal to the WR with 2 seconds on the clock, the WR damn well better be ready and execute. You are really reaching now to impose your hate on the QB. Romo has faults, you don't have to make them up.

So in fact Romo didn't audible to a rookie "who didn't know the plays" either? Williams knew the plays, he just didn't see the signal?

Crap, what can we vaguely pin on Romo now?

I have no problem with him audibling with 3 seconds if he thinks that is the right call, what I have issue with is audibling with 3 seconds to a ROOKIE who appears no brighter than Ogletree. Also, the same rookie that ran the wrong routes in preseason.

You almost got it. Sure, he should be able to audible with 2 seconds on the clock if he wants (even though that causes delay of the game sometimes) the problem is Williams shouldn't even be on the field, it should be Harris in his position. Had Harris been on the field he would have picked up that audible, caught the pass, and then we would have kicked a field goal. It's a much higher risk when you have a rookie in there week 1 who has shown a propensity for not paying attention and running the wrong routes. I'm not just pinning this on Romo like you are trying to suggest. I'm pinning some of the blame on the coaching staff for having Williams out there in the first place, I'm blaming Romo for trusting a rookie that shouldn't be trusted, and then doing so with only 3 seconds on the clock, and I'm blaming the rookie for not running the correct route.

Your hate for Romo is consuming you. Give the guy a break. He's more than capable of leading this team to a championship.

I love Tony Romo and pull for him in every game.. I have no idea what you are talking about.

We can blame him for not recruiting a tub of goo to sign with Dallas to be a NT.

Late to the party but here nevertheless.. You are incorrect sir. Williams faked his own QB out by changing his route drastically as the ball was leaving Romo's hands. As much grief as I have placed towards Romo over the years, that INT was definitely not his fault.

Blaming WR Williams is in my opinion missing the big picture and who should shoulder the burden of blame. The more I see this play, the more I look to Romo for blame.

It is 3rd and 11 (basically 3rd and goal since they were so close). The team is in FG range. Don't do anything STUPID should be the philosophy. How does Romo look at that coverage and audible to a 4-5 yard slant on 3rd and 11 into the teeth of the defense is beyond me. The CB is clearly taking away the slant and there are two defenders nearby in the area. The odds of that slant picking up the first are slim to none. Further compounding the problem is Romo seems to audible to the slant to a rookie WR 3-4 seconds before the playclock expires and has to hurry up and beg for the ball to be snapped at 1 second. Romo is in shotgun and takes one or two small steps back and is under no pressure to speak of. Romo then forces the slant even though the WR is clearly not in any position to succeed. This appears to be Romo's first and only read on the play and he stubbornly forced the ball. Romo did not look anywhere else and was under no pressure and decided to force a 5 yard slant on 3rd and 11 with the CB draped on the WR.

Romo is a seasoned vet and should know better. A) It was a horrible play call and/or audible knowing the down and distance and field location from the get-go. B) Forced the pass while under no pressure. C) Romo had plenty of time to see the defense on that play and thought a slant would somehow work.

Sure, Williams is to blame for not running what he was supposed to. However, that play should have never been audibled to (or should have been audibled out if Callahan called it). And the ball definitely should have never left Romo's hand. Seems to me poor overall field management on the QB from the get-go on that play.

I could be wrong. Just a little different take on it. I'm not a Romo hater by the way. He played well and managed the game well overall.

I hope it was 3rd and 11 on that play or I make little sense :)

Well that explains why you're here and not on an NFL roster

hahhaaha,, That and the fact that I am too short, too fat and don't have an ounce of talent..... But, hell, why go for the more reliable BIG MONEY guys on important downs like 3rd.. Must be me..

Thanks coach..

Watch the play again, a double move becomes offensive pass interference as Witten and Austin are blocking defenders with the pass in the air. Also wouldn't be a TD since there was a safety over the top (the guy that caught the INT).

Based on CB behavior, he breaks on the ball coming at him, not the WR's route. The CB had an outside shade/gave up the inside, then the receiver gave up the inside to go outside. So a pass over the top isn't open given the CB's outside shade/WR not trying to take the outside and would be another good chance at an interception. I also think the WR's route might have been more in-breaking than a slant given the use and position of the blockers (otherwise why block?), but I can't tell from the TV's angles.

That whole play looks jacked up anyhow. I agree with you. Even if caught, no first down. 3 is still better than INT..

Off-topic, but did anyone notice during the game if Romo threw any passes from outside the pocket?
