Third-round pick Jason Williams is a tremendous athlete blessed with great speed, quickness and strength.
But those attributes are useless unless he learns how to play the pro game.
Williams, an alum of Western Illinois, struggled with schemes, coverages, etc., during training camp.
But in last Friday's preseason game against Tennessee "a light came on," Wade Phillips said Monday.
"I could see it in that game," Phillips said. "He played well in that game. I'm looking forward to seeing him more. He practiced good right before the game, practiced good again today. It seems to be coming to him."
The highlight for Williams was forcing Titans backup QB Patrick Ramsey into an intentional grounding for a safety.
"He knew what to do, he knew where to go and he got to it," Phillips said.
Considering how thin the Cowboys are depth-wise, this is great news for Phillips. Although Bobby Carpenter has all but nailed down the nickel linebacker spot, Phillips needs Williams to be ready should Carpenter go down with an injury.
