I hope this is a smokescreen; otherwise it is absolute stupidity.

This is 2004 all over again - passing on Stephen Jackson, to pick up Julius Jones and picks. A lesser player and the hope that the extra picks turn into something.

Trading down has usually failed for Dallas.

What's worst, is to trade down to get Watt. A DE in a 3-4 is not a playmaker. His job is to stop the run and occupy blockers so the LBs can make plays. Unless Ryan is going back to a 4-3 primary D, this is a waste.

Yes, Dallas needs DEs. They don't need one in the first round. They don't need one to the extent that they "settle" for lesser talent.

I am tired of the wheeling and dealing for additional picks, just to draft players that are, at best, career backups, and at worst, out of the league in 3 years.

Watt compares very favorably to Adam Carriker. Carriker was taken 13th by the Rams, and he was a bust for them. He is in Washington now. Again, DE is in the top three bust positions in the first round. Offensive tackle is a much safer position to draft in round one.

Watt is not an explosive start-stop athlete on his game film. His work out reminded me of Mike Mamula. Watt doesn't even weigh 300 pounds yet and and will need to get stronger to take on guards and tackles in the NFL (double teams). His pass rush is raw inside, and he needs to learn more moves. I don't see him being anything special inside (as an inside rusher).

The Cowboys have a 34 DE named Marcus Spears (drafted number 20 overall), and he is about to walk after one contract. Drafting a 34 DE in round 1 would be cheating the offensive line again and devaluing it, again. I don't think Jason Garrett will do it, especially in the top ten. It's best to be on the front end of the offensive tackle run, and Tyron Smith is worth the 9th overall pick according to multiple draft experts. Giving up Smith's blend of athleticism, upper body strength or power, youth, and huge upside (after playing with the worst RT in the NFL last year) would be the definition of stupid. I'm calling Dallas' bluff in regards to J.J. Watt.

Can anyone name one DE playing in the NFL from Wisconsin, because the last one drafted in round one was a bust (Erasmus James).

Drafting Watt at 9 would be like drafting Adam Carriker at 9. That is asking for a bust. Watt is not a cornerstone player, but Tyron Smith is a cornerstone player. You want to draft cornerstone players in the top 10, not players like J.J. Watt.

The Cowboys are at least two drafts away from being able to solidify their own offensive and defensive lines, and they would be smart to concentrate their fire power in this draft in the offensive line. That way they can lay the foundation to be very strong in that area. It has been ignored way too long.

The Cowboys will play the best offensive line in football (the Jets) during week one, and if Dallas takes their 2010 offensive line into that game or if they don't get the best players possible in this draft (in the offensive line), the Jets and the NFL will embarrass them.

Tyron Smith is the best offensive linemen in this draft, and he rates 2nd only to Okung in the past two drafts (according to 2 very good draft analysts). There is really no excuse for not taking him at 9.

1 playoff win since 1996

Colombo was the worst OT in the NFL last year

Dallas is not in a position to turn down blue chip talent like Smith, because they are not "one player away".

When you draft Tyron Smith, you are drafting for the next 14 years and drafting a cornerstone offensive linemen.

Do you build your defensive front around J.J. Watt? There will be other options in the DL in this draft, but the offensive tackle quality drops off the table after round one.

Plus, the idea that Smith isn't ready to plug and play at RT is comical, and that doesn't align with what the vast majority of experts are saying, including the Seattle Seahawks head coach.

The team that drafts Tyron Smith, will plug and play him immediately.

Good luck to the team that drafts J.J. Watt in the top 20, especially if that team is talent deficient in key areas, like the Cowboys.

What are the chances you would compare Adam Carriker to J.J. Watt because they're both white defensive linemen?

Also, can you name one DE from Troy worth two-cents before DeMarcus Ware came on the scene?

Can you name one prolific WR from Marshall before Randy Moss was drafted?

Comparing Watt and Mamula is comically misguided.

In what way are they similiar outside of being white?

You mean you didn't like:

Robert B-U-S-T-E-R

It's o.k. to trade down sometimes, but the Cowboys for sure have been burned some, especially in the 2009 draft.

We are going to find out how much Jason Garrett values Tyron Smith, because I think if Garrett really wants him, he will get him at 9. Having this so called "group of players" just plays into this trade down philosophy. How about staying put and taking the best player, because your team is drafting in the top 10 and needs a blue chip offensive linemen and difference makers for now the the future..

The team is extremely deficient in the offensive line and turning down a value like Tyron Smith would be ignorant. Hey, got to love that third round pick, Jerry. Let's go get James Marten or Jason Williams....ect... Ye-ha...I'm in Vegas...

Why would you give up a B.J. Raiji value at 9 (Tyron Smith), just so you can add a third round pick?

I guess, it would give Jerry Jones another chance to go find him a "Buster".

Tyron Smith has all the tools to be a dominant RT or LT in the NFL. He has all the tools to match any pass rusher in the NFL. Smith's run blocking is exceptional, and he his power and athleticism on the right side would make Felix Jones extremely dangerous and reopen the playbook and the field in the running game. Smith has LT pass blocking skills and is a powerful, extremely athletic RT. Plus, Smith's pass protection skills are exceptional. His ceiling is very, very high.

There may be some in the organization who want to trade down from 9, but Jason Garrett may feel differently in regards to Smith, and I hope he trumps the idiotic version of trading down. Sometimes players are grouped together, and trading down is smart. However, Smith is absolutely worth the 9th pick, and Dallas should take him and not risk losing him for a bloody third round pick. That is beyond ridiculous.

I agreed with your assesment of Watt, but to say that Smith is a blue chip corner stone player is a bit of hyperbole. He has the chance to be that given his raw athletic ability and youth. But Tyron Smith is no sure thing like youre leading on. Not saying he cant play now, because he probably can. But RT could very well all he could ever be, and whether he even turns out to be an elite 1 is yet to be seen.

I didn't bring race into it. Both players happen to be white, and I don't really care. I don't care what color the player is, I want to be "winning". I want the best players....Green, Purple, ect...I have given specific examples of concerns about Watt's game translating to the NFL.

Watt is a comparable player to Carriker. They are built very similar, and they are both pure power players. They are both not explosive, fast athletes.

CBS NFL Draft Scout compared Watt to Carriker. Look at their scouting report on Watt. Carriker is playing DE for Washington now. Carriker was over drafted and was built up to be this pass rush force on the interior, and he wasn't. I don't think Watt is going to be a great pass rusher at DT in a four man line. That is just my opinion. I think that is a key area where he is being way over rated.

If anyone drafts Watt at 9, he better be Richard Seymour. Watt isn't even close. He's not as good as Cameron Jordan, imo.

Both Watt and Carriker are pure power players. I'm not buying Watt's big work out numbers from the combine. Again, Watt isn't an explosive start-stop, quick twitch athlete on his game film. According to Broaddus, he will need more pass rush moves and can be pushed around when he uses his spin move. He will need to get bigger and stronger to take on the double teams in the 34. The Eagles bought Mamula's combine numbers and got burned. Watt had a big combine, but I'm not buying his hype.

Chris Canty was drafted in the 4th round, and he was a great value.

Drafting J.J. Watt in the top 20 is not a good value, imo. Drafting him at 9 would be beyond stupid.

However, the draft is weaker around where Watt is projected to go (17 or 18), so a 34 team may draft him. I say any team that drafts Watt in the top 20, will be reaching to fill the need. If they are talented like San Diego or New England, they can probably get away with it. If they are not, good luck to them. Dallas lacks critical parts or could use depth: OT, C/G, S, CB, DL...

We have seen the Chris Longs and Adam Carrikers not live up to the hype. They happen to be white, but both players were built up to be something that they ended up not being. Both were defensive linemen who were over drafted and not as good as advertised. Chris Long went number 2. His dad was a hall of fame player.

I think Watt could be a player like Marcus Spears, Spears was not supposed to be just a two down player. I think the Stephen Bowens of the world have the athletic ability to put players like J.J. Watt on the sidelines, when you go to your 4 man line.

Why not resign Spears to a reasonable contract instead of dipping into a high bust position in the first round and drafting the next Spears?

How about finding the next Chris Canty in the 3rd or fourth round?

7 defensive players drafted in that 2009 draft, and the offense gets a developmental QB, Robert "Buster" and a 3rd TE. Have to love the erratic kicker, too. How can you possibly draft 12 players and only draft one project offensive line player and zero defensive linemen.

That is one reason why Dallas is in this mess, and this mess on both lines can't be cleaned up in one draft, so the Cowboys better start solidifying the offensive line first.

Hey, you got Roy E. Williams, Jerry.. Ye-Ha...

Christian Ballard is a good value in late round 2 or early three. I bet he can give you some inside pass rush. He came to Dallas to visit. He will not cost a top 20 pick, either. He will not come with the high risk, either. He can probably get into a rotation, especially on the inside (4 man line).

He is being projected by some teams as a 34 DE.

Kendrick Ellis is out there, but I wouldn't draft him in the first three rounds for sure, and I probably wouldn't draft him at all.

You can call him any color you want to, but he is a foundational player. They don't grow on trees.

Mosley talked to three AFC scouts and 1 NFC scout and listed the 6 safest players in the draft. Smith was number 4.

Smith is more talented than any offensive linemen the Cowboys currently have. He's rated number one on Gosselin's board.

Offensive linemen drafted in round one are safer picks than DEs in round 1. The numbers are out there. NFL.com had a good article on it recently.

Smith is absolutely the caliber of player that you build your offensive line around, and you don't pass over him, just because he is 20 years old, especially if you are drafting in the top 10 and have one playoff win since 1996.

Chris Mortenson stated that Tyron Smith is worth the 9th pick, and he stated that Smith would have been a top 3-5 pick in the 2012 draft.

I'm fine with Tyron Smith being "just a RT" for the next 14 years, because I value the position in todays NFL. However, he has all the tools to play that left side. The NFL knows it. He's going to be a freak at RT if the Cowboys get him.

There will be learning curves for every player taken in this draft, including Patrick Peterson, Von Miller, Marcell Dareus, and A.J.Green. They are no sure things, either. You have to earn it on the field. However, you can't coach some of the athletic ability that these players have. Smith has the best combination of athleticism and power in this draft, at the OT position.

Broaddus would take Smith over Castonzo, Watt, and Jordan. He is a guy who had a key role in drafting Tra Thomas.

Smith is worth the 9th pick according to the vast majority of draft experts, and that is the real debate.

Gil Brandt stated that Smith was worth a top 10 pick and stated that he had more value than Watt or Jordan.

Can't say I disagree with your take. Just want to clarify we got Canty where we did due to injury and character questions. He had the eye injury from a bar fight. I think things played out where his character questions were not a big deal, but just wanted to note there was a reason he fell in the draft. There were concerns that he would be blind in one eye.

It seems like for every annalist that rates Smith highly theres 1 that says hes overrated and only a RT. Personally I feel like he still needs a good amount of polishing to be a good OT in the NFL. I think he relied heavily on being bigger and more athletic than the guys he was going up against in college, that obviously wont be the case a lot of times in the NFL. With that said his combo of size and athleticism gives him a ton of potential. I agree he should absolutely be the 1st o-lineman taken and hes a better prospect than both Watt and Jordan. However, my main problem is whether or not he is head and shoulders better than Camiri or Sherrod who can be had 10-15 picks later. Personally, Im not completely sold on that fact and like the possibility of getting multiple picks along with Sherrod. I wouldnt be upset if we took Smith at #9, but the possibilities of trading back once or even twice to get Sherrod plus a 2nd rounder who could contribute right away to the secondary or d-line is very enticing to me.

That's actually far from the truth.

Ask any scout worth a damn that has been around the game for a long time and they will tell you in the end, any good scout will go back to the start and evaluate their board before any of the draft process got started. Back when all you had when was game film to judge a guy. Often the best decisions are made when you stay with what got you where you were in the 1st place.

I dont even have the energy for it but that analysis of Watt is crock of crap.

The reason he was making his way up draft boards is because of the athletic ability he displayed at Wisconsin and at the Combine. All you have to do is take a look at the guys numbers to realize who have an athlete on your hands and explosive one at that. I find it funny he is athletic enough at the combine to be asked to do LB drills and display surprising ability doing it and jump up to the first half of round 1 and now he's a slouch.

Is he the greatest value at 9, that can be debated and I'm not 100% sold that he is but I'm not about to dog the guy because of it. He's going to be a hell of a player in this league.

Which is it?

You twisted it to fit your agenda.

I was debating two totally different arguments. Sometimes you try too hard and in the 2nd I clearly stated his play at Wisconsin was a contributing factor is his rise supporting my first theory.

There is nothing here to debate.

Youre using contradictory statements to support your argument.

First you tell me that any scout worth a damn relies on game film before the draft process even begins. Then you say JJ Watt has proven his athleticism at Wisconsin and the combine, and deserves to be rising up the draft boards. Your 2nd statement is similar to the one I made originally that made you disagree w/ me in your 1st statement.

1 week before the draft and 5-6 names come out of nowhere and none are Tyron?

All Im saying is that they arent taking Watt at 9. No way is he good enough for that pick. I wouldnt say hes a bust though, I only feel that way about a few guys like Von Miller, Nate Solder, Cam, and Marcel Dareus.

Miller and Dareus are considered two of the safest players in the draft. This is strictly opinion, and not what most analysts and scouts are saying.

I think Dareus is going to be underwhelming for a #2 overall pick and Von Miller will be a straight bust.

At some point if hes just speed he will essentially be a blitzing corner off the edge instead of a pass rushing specialist w/ an array of moves and the ability to stop the run. I also think his motor runs cold and a tackle w/ decent feet can contain him no problem

#1, I dont get paid as a scout, I have no influence over any teams draft board so me stating what is happening is not a reflection on my beliefs.

#2, JJ Watt was considered a top 15 pick before the draft process even began so as the draft process is intended to work. The combine was used as a tool to separate closely graded prospects. Any team that had him in their top 15 rightly should of increased his grade based on the Combine and thus separated himself from some of the other prospects. It's not saying they dropped what they knew before the combine and went with numbers, it's saying they were smart enough to use the process for what it meant.

#3, if we are saying the same thing at any point and I disagreed I apologize. It appears I may have misunderstood your statement.

As far as Tyron Smith goes, I think people got too locked into him because his name was being tossed around the media so freely. Does anyone really believe 3 weeks ago the Cowboys made up their mind that he was the top player available and thus a lock at #9. That would be just silly. Also, just because no one is talking about him does not mean the interest is not there but again, it would be crazy to believe there is no interest any where else.

Which was what my first statement was. That any talk of who we are taking 4 months ago was pointless b/c the process wasnt done yet. Jason Garrett didnt even get a chance to look at any of these guys at that point.

Sounds like we agree that its something like an 85/15 split. And in Nick Fairleys case that 15% might have killed him.

Who do you think is the safest player in the draft?
