An interesting group of first-time eligible candidates are among the 25 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which was unveiled tonight.

Quarterback Brett Favre and wide receiver Terrell Owens are two of the new names on the list, which will be reduced to 15 before a maximum class of five modern-era candidates is voted on the day before the Super Bowl.

While Favre makes a clear case for induction, Owens will create a complex argument, as his raw numbers have to be balanced by the impact he has had on teams.

Owens is second on the all-time receiving yards list (15,934), third in touchdowns (153) and sixth on the all-time receptions list (1,078). But he also played for five teams, and those moves weren’t always based on football or financial reasons.

For what it is worth, my 5 picks would be:

Favre
TO
Kevin Green
Steve Atwater
and maybe Terry Holt

Favre
TO
Green

Those three would for sure get in if I was voting or had anything to do with the decision making.

Favre is a no brainer. He's getting in for sure.

If TO doesn't get in 1st ballot they really need to change voters. How is Favre anymore qualified then TO is? Both deserve to get in.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Favre is a lot more qualified than Owens, simply because of his status as an icon for this generation. That said Owens deserves it on his own merit, just from a pure production standpoint.

One person I do NOT want in there is Tony Dungy. Cannot stand that zombie.

I don't think TO will get in on the first ballot.
I could be wrong though.

I see
Pace
Farve
Warner (maybe Holt)
Snake
DeBartalo Jr.

It would be incredibly silly if TO doesn't get in.

For me, he went from Villain to Hero to Nuisance to Depressing, but you cannot take away from how great of a football player he was.

If he gets in, I am afraid there will be some divorces.

I too don't think that TO gets in this year.
Made Irvin wait a year and how many years did Carter have to wait?

TO was an icon in his own right. He wasn't a choir boy but the media loved to talk about him as much as Favre. He also made a lot of fans everywhere he went and is the undisputed number 2 receiver of all time on paper.

He did this with an assortment of quarterbacks unlike other all time greats that consistently played with either hall of fame quarterbacks or the same player for years. Most QBs make their receivers better, TO made QB's better.

Favre and T.O. are clear first ballot HOF, if T.O. doesn't get in first ballot the whole thing is a farce

Bret Favre
Terrell Davis
Jimmy Johnson
Steve Atwater
Orlando Pace

Terrell Davis has to be in. Yes, his career was short but, my gosh, they ran him into the ground. It's not his 2000 yard rushing season that is the most impressive. In 8 playoff games the guy got over 1100 yards for a 5.6 average per carry. Unreal!

Terrell Davis had 7 out of 8 playoff games over 100 yards rushing and the 8th game was for 91 yards! In those 8 playoff games he scored 12 TD's!
As good as John Elway was, he didn't win a Super Bowl until this guy showed up in his 15th year. He finished his career with back to back and Terrell was the reason.

Terrell Owens does not get in. His numbers don't mean jack because they didn't accomplish jack.

Terrell Owens was a destroyer of teams. His actions hurt far more than his numbers helped. He was a selfish, pouty little "B".

Is Chuck Howley still eligible? He should have done got elected. And it's a joke that Dave Robinson for GB got in a few yrs ago and chuck had a waaaaayyyy better career

^This. Absolutely.

If Chuck Howley played ROLB for Pittsburgh he would have been inducted years ago. He was better than Robinson. I don't like crying "anti-Cowboys" bias, but in the case of Howley (and possibly Drew Pearson), something is terribly amiss.
