Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will face the Cowboys for the first time since Jerry Jones fired him midway through the 2010 season.

“The good thing about Texas is there’s no taxes,” Phillips said, via Alden Gonzalez of ESPN. “But they still charge you that California tax when you go to Texas, so I don’t understand that deal. That’s another story. Yeah, we spent some good years there. I enjoyed being there, worked hard for three and a half years there, and it was a big part of my life at the time. It still is. I have fond memories.”

Jones hired Phillips as head coach in 2007 after hiring Jason Garrett as an assistant coach. Phillips went 34-22 in Dallas, twice leading the Cowboys to the playoffs, and earning a contract extension after the 2009 season. But Jones fired Phillips and replaced him with Garrett after the team’s 1-7 start in 2010.

Phillips detailed his time in Dallas in his book, “Son of Bum: Lessons My Dad Taught Me About Football And Life,” and insists Jones was “good to me.”

“Most of the teams in the league, it didn’t end well with me,” Phillips said. “If I had a vendetta against any team that fired me, I’d have about a quarter of the league.”

Phillips was a head coach or interim head coach for six teams in his career. He got his start in the NFL in 1976, coaching the linebackers for his father, Bum Phillips, with the Houston Oilers.

I like Wade, but I didn't want to see him hired, and I was happy when he left. He's sort of the mirror-opposite of Garrett. Very good coordinator, tons of experience with Xs and Os, but his teams were disorganized and lacked direction. Drafts under him were complete crapshoots because he abdicated responsibility for that side of the business. It was a nice change from Parcells in 2007, but then it couldn't hold together over time because he was excellent with particulars but wasn't an organized leader. Which is why the entire team quit on him at the end.

He does always say nice things about Jerry, though. Not so much about Jason Garrett. Which always surprises me since Garrett was put in place explicitly to be the next HC from day one, and everybody knew it. And there was no denying Wade's team fell apart behind him when he was finally fired.

Wade was weak here as a head coach. It was an era of disappointments and squeezing progressively worse results out of a super talented and well-coached team he inherited from Parcells.

But he always was and remains a great DC.

And all indications are that he's a class act and a genuinely good human being. It's hard for me not to like the guy.

Wade's a really good coordinator. And he's a moderately successful head coach. We're not the only team in the league to fire him from a HC gig, though.

No matter how you look at it, Wade inherited a winning team and left a losing one. Jason inherited a losing team and built a winning one.

Really sucks that the timing of his hire was as a head coach and not a d coordinator. Of course after his disaster here everyone else gets him as a coordinator.

He inherited a 9-7 team that hadn't won a playoff game in forever so you are really stretching that fact about as far as it can be stretched... or however far one single regular season game can be stretched.
