As of right now, I'm going to take a class and just rent guns. I'll stick with .22 to start. After that if I'm still interested, that's when I'll buy something that I like the look and feel of. I'd want something with more power though. I'm very much into design/aesthetics too, but that should never trump functionality.

If you have the option of renting, that is clearly the way to get started. You may not enjoy shooting. If not, you are not invested in something that you don't want. Renting is not an option in my area

Yup, and to my surprise the place near is pretty nice and has a decent selection, at least from my perspective. I've never been to a range though so what do I know.

Since you don't have any friends who shoot, this is the best way to start. And definitely try different semi-auto and revolver handguns to get a feel for what you like.

A .22 rifle should be everyones starting gun. Cheap ammo quiet and no recoil. Perfect target shooting gun.

That's what I've heard and read. I'd much rather start with a pistol though. I'll leave it up to the person I speak to at the range.

You use a rifle to hunt unless you're going to be a sniper.

I would recommend a subcompact 9mm or .40cal semiauto pistol. Or you can go with something simpler like a revolver in say .357. You should definitely go to a gun shop with a range and fire some pistols before buying anything. And if you know nothing about a gun then take a course to familiarize yourself as others suggested. You can then go from there.

Unless a shot gun then you can shoot skeet or trap

The first hand gun I ever fired was a 44.

What a thrill.

I had to have one.

Everything else I tried after buying my 44 was like a toy. Not real practical to carry for self defense tho. But fun to fire.

Best advice is try out different ones and see what you like. Do some research and find out what is good for you usage.

Got a 45-70 Bison Bull that is a real blast. Monster revolver. Totally impractical but I love to shoot it.

If you're set on getting a pistol and in .22 cal I would definitely look at Ruger. Ruger MarkIII to be more specific. I use a .22 pistol during some training evolution's. Ammo is significantly cheaper. Nice little gun and very, very durable.

If you want a nice rifle in .22 I would recommend another Ruger. The 10/22 is a nice straight shooter. I'm actually getting ready to put a silencer on my 10/22 as soon as I get my tax stamp. Marlin also makes a nice .22.

I just want to start shooting .22 to begin with. That was suggested in this thread and makes sense. Again, I'll listen to whatever the guy at the range tells me.

If I like it as much as I think I will and finish taking a few classes I'd like something a little more powerful. I'd be lying if I said I didn't like the Sig P226 or P229 as something to own. Either way, if I like it I'm sure I'll be owning many guns. :D

I've heard people rave about the Smith and Wesson’s M&P .22. Definitely a lot better looking than the MarkIII. ;)

I was thinking about getting one, but I may be moving to Manhattan soon. I'm not sure I can even legally own in the city. NYC has one of the most strict gun laws in the country.

NYC is a joke. MD is a joke as well, but not as bad as NY.

SW is a good product, but I don't have much experience with that brand. The good thing about that gun is that it is similar in looks and operation like other bigger caliber semi's so training motions will be the same.

I have a Walther .22 that I've had for years that I use.

I recommended the Ruger because you can drop a nuke on that gun and it will keep on working.

Good choice.

Entry fee isn't as steep as bigger cal guns.

Seems like you are getting the Signess... Love my Sigs. I have the P226.

Forgot to add one more company: FNH USA. I have the 5.7. Would love to get the P90 in the future. They use the same ammo. Nice to have when the zombies come.

I think you're right. I don't think an average citizen is allowed to have a gun anywhere in the 5 boroughs. I live in NJ and after doing some research I thought our gun laws were strict, damn.

I think a shotgun is a good weapon for self defense although it has its problems. For someone with no weapons training it might be the best thing.
