New 4th and 15 onside kick rule?

Special teams should determine onside kicks, not quarterbacks.

It would be a lot easier and make more sense, to just allow teams to follow the old kickoff rules ONLY for onside kicks.

Like the team can declare to refs, we are going to onside kick. Then they can let the kicking team get a running start like before.

Changing the rule completely to this 4th and 15 crap is stupid.

Something has to be done to even out odds a bit for onside kick. It went from having a small but possible chance to having no chance at all due to formation and run up rule

You can tell by the rule changes the past few years that they are slowly getting rid of kickoffs. It's the most dangerous (top speed, high collisions) play in the football.
One, there are NFL people who generally care about players welfare and want to make the game safer. Two, from a legal standpoint, it shows the league is taking real steps to reduce opportunities for concussions.

Mark my words, within 10 years the kickoff will be gone, and kids will not play tackle football until 12, possibly high school age. It's the only way football will survive.

I didn’t even think about the penalties. But yes this is horrible if so. Just horrible.

So you kick a field goal from the 20 to start the 4th quarter. You run a 15 yard play and keep the ball. You drive 5 minutes into field goal range, get 3, run a 15 yard play, repeat.

There's going to be teams that keep the ball all 4th quarter without much trouble.

There's also going to become special packages on offense specifically for this 15 yard attempt.

They're acting like it's a small change, this change would dramatically impact 4th quarter strategy

I don’t see why this is an issue.

A ton of games in the NFL already come down to the last minute or go to OT.

There really isn’t some dramatic need to provide teams an opportunity to get back into a game. Most NFL games are still competitive until the final minutes, as is.

The NFL I knew as a youngster and loved so much is dying a slow and painful death. As others have said, go back to the old onside kick rules! Simple!

On a related note, I was never a fan of the new overtime rules, either. The whining about a coin toss deciding a game's outcome. If your team's defense can't force a three and out with the game on the line, they deserve to lose.
