ARLINGTON, Texas – While Dez Bryant and his camp seem to be floating around the possibility he could miss the season opener, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn’t seem too concerned.
In fact, during Wednesday’s minicamp practice at AT&T Stadium, Jones sounded rather emphatic the other way, stating he fully expects Bryant to be in uniform when the Cowboys face the Giants Sept. 13.
“I really can’t and don’t concern ourselves about three months from now. I have no doubt that when we play, if we’re still in a franchise situation with Dez, I have no doubt that he’ll be leading the way against the Giants,” Jones said. “We know how competitive Dez is, how much he wants to beat the Giants, how much he wants to support his teammates – everybody understands how this cap thing works.”
But if not the latter, Jones went into more detail about the significance of the franchise tag, stating the reason the policy was created wasn’t to be a negative aspect for either side, but to simply protect clubs from losing key players.
“Just to remind everybody, the franchise is a very relevant, significant part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement,” Jones said. “It’s there, not to be punitive – it’s there to tremendously reward a player that’s out of contract if the club wants to use that on him. That’s what we’ve done. The rules were bargained as to deadlines, they were done so that you can keep things up in the air.”

Someone tell Dez that getting tagged was a good thing and Jerry did it to reward him.

it is what the NFLPA agreed on and it does pay that player top 5 money. In the end long term deal is a benefit to both sides and I'm sure both would like to reach a deal

What is interesting is that both sides are communicating thru media. Hopefully means a phone call from one side to the other is imminent.

All this chatter is making me believe more a deal will get done by July 15.

I like Stephen Jones but in the end I think this deal gets done with Jerry in a one on one with Dez and his agent.

I can't believe I'm saying this but here it goes:
Well said Mr. Jones.

he's reading the script provided by Stephen! lol

I agree though with an earlier poster with all this Dez contract situation talk lately.......hopefully where there's smoke there's fire!

Jerry wrote the script, when big deals have had to get done Jerry has seen to it that it happens.

I love having Dez on our team, but I will say this much- if he voluntarily sits out any number of games due to being franchise tagged, then my opinion of him will change.

With that being said, I don't expect him to sit out any games. I just don't think he could bring himself to do that (which is one of the reasons I like him so much).

I hope that they can agree on a long term deal sooner rather than later, however, if he signs that tag then he should play under it.

True but I believe Jones was referring to more than players, agents and teams.

I think Jerry is ensuring all that Dez will be there. I think there is a lot of hand waving and gnashing of teeth by all of us but in the end I honestly believe all of this will be worked out.

They know how competitive Dez is. Looks like they are using it to their advantage.

Not even Jerry belives that. i have a feeling this is not going to end well .

well then that is on Dez, his union agreed to it many players have had the Franchise tag placed on them and he is getting the pay of a top 5 player. Really no reason for Dez not to play. I have no doubt the organization wants to get a deal done and so does Dez however if they can't get it done now then by the agreement in the CBA Dallas is able to keep a franchise player and the player is rewarded with big money for the season

well then that is on Dez

From here on out it's all on Dez. If he truly wants $17M.

I took BDC Jr to the local sports place Monday because all their merch was on a sidewalk sale. They had a Dez jersey his size for 1/2 price, had the money in his hand ready to buy it and I said NO.

Dez wants the security of a long term deal. And that is understandable. He is pissed right now because he knows that he is going to get franchised for two straight years. The Cowboys hold all the cards right now. So if he blows out a knee in the next two years, he will probably lose a chance at his best chance to get huge money out of a deal. He hasnt gotten the cash he needs up to this point.

And I am sure the Cowboys are balking on not only the money of the deal, but the number of years and the guaranteed money. Im sure they want a safe agreement in case he screws up in his personal life.
