New Deal Or Not, Jerry Fully Expects Dez To “Lead The Way” vs. NY Giants

The main problem with being franchised is if your injured, and it is career ending injury, or lessens your ability to play the same, if that happens
Then the player is screwed compared to if he had a contract with 20 or more mil guaranteed.

If he plays this year and no injuries then it is ok, but there is the possibility of serious injury so that is the flaw of franchise tag.

What could correct this is if they had a clause saying if the player is injured and it ends his career or lessens his ability's, then he gets paid
a bonus of 30 mil that isnt on the teams cap. This could even be a insurance deal.
That way the player doesnt have to worry about being injured and only getting the tag salary for that year.

From here on out it's all on Dez. If he truly wants $17M.

I took BDC Jr to the local sports place Monday because all their merch was on a sidewalk sale. They had a Dez jersey his size for 1/2 price, had the money in his hand ready to buy it and I said NO.

I try not to let these talks on contract get to me, things are said during this time and as soon as it is worked out it is all water under the bridge. It is the business end of the game the end I don't care for but it is the reality of it. I think this will all work out and just as I did not let it affect me when it was Emmitt Smith and his contract disputes I will not let this change my views on Dez.

As for the 17 I have looked high and low and just can't find any reporting on Dez saying he wants 17 mill. 1st time I saw that was here and have not seen it any where's else. I think fans would be better off if they just stepped back from this and let it play it's way out.

I can't believe I'm saying this but here it goes:
Well said Mr. Jones.

No kidding. Are they sure it was jerry? Was he reading a tel-prompter?

Holy shiznitz, Batman.

also I think unless Dez caves and takes what they are offering, including supervision off field there will be no deal.
Then the only question is will dez sit a few games to protest?
As I have said before he could miss a few games just to prevent them franchising him again in 2016.
If he plays all games then they have no reason to not franchise him again.

That is true, just as Dallas being on the hook for big money when Irvin had his career ending injury or Troy leaving and Dallas still on the hook for a lot of money. Money they paid out without the service of the player. I try to understand both sides of this the player and that of the organization. I think in the end Dez will be paid very well and will have some guarantees but the organization is not pocketing money here they have to see it from a stand point of the overall good for the organization and players who themselves will soon become FA.

I hope beyond hope that all this gets worked out with dez because before he retires I would love to see Jason witten and tony romo win a championship. with this team romo sure has taken lots of stuff over the last few years.

And I am sure the Cowboys are balking on not only the money of the deal, but the number of years and the guaranteed money. Im sure they want a safe agreement in case he screws up in his personal life.
I feel that is a somewhat unfair assumption. Outside the nonsense that sprung up between his mother and him, Bryant has done very little to jeopardize his professional career with significant off-the-field legal issues. I think the front office would be similarly cautious negotiating a contract with a receiver of Bryant's caliber without a controversial past. I believe the primary concerns are the financial terms of the proposed contract in relation to the team's salary cap and much less upon what Bryant may or may not do to screw up after signing the contract.

fans bicker, nothing new there. lol

Players, agents and organization do understand

Murray didn't seem to understand. He got his feelings hurt when he didn't get a contract. I think it gets emotional for the player. Not so much for the owners.

He also had a jewelry issue, the mall incident, etc. He has kept pretty clean after that but he also had pretty strict rules. He has now fired the person who had helped him. I have to think that didn't help the team in feeling comfortable. I think that is the root of the issue based on the "leaks" in the media about Dez from Valley Ranch.

The jewelry and mall issues are minor. Contract negotiation are going to gridlock if such minor issues make the front office overly cautious. The firing will do the same if the new agent is impeding negotiations. I think the leaks are having more negative effects outside of the negotiations than within them.

The 17 was just a number one of the "reporters" on ESPN used yesterday. I can't find it officially anywhere either. It would be easy for the fans to step away if all of this business were behind closed doors.

I have read that the Cowboys are still concerned about his off the field company. And let's not forget that he had a 24 hour person with him all the time with rules about drinking, strip clubs, ect...ect.... So now you are going to give this guy 100 million, make him rich to where he doesnt need to worry, then let him run around with no security to keep him out of trouble? I wouldnt take that chance.

I also think to a certain extent that Jerry feels like Dez owes the Cowboys something because he never would have gotten to this point in his career without their help and mentoring. Talent wise he always had it, but if they hadnt coddled him and put the security in place for him, he would have screwed things up for himself. I have to agree with that angle. But I am sure that Dez is just the opposite. Thinking that he did everything they asked him to do and stayed out of trouble so now he has earned a big contract and the freedom to be on his own. Tough situation. I would give him a 5 year contract for 12 or even 13 million per year at most with 2 years worth of salary guaranteed. Make the first two years salary very low so that most of that is the guaranteed money. So you are taking a 2 year chance on him. The back 3 years are non guaranteed and if he is doing well, you can restructure the agreement and extend it or give him more guaranteed money.

I don't think Murray got his feeling hurt at all, he was offered a lot more in Philly and took it, that is business. He had nothing negative to say about the organization, the city or anyone else.

True, I'm as guilty as anyone else and have to remind myself this is just part of the negotiation process. Once these deals get done both sides brush off all the talk that took place but often it is the fans with the hurt feelings. This is just business it will get sorted out

Sounds like Jerry is letting Dez know he's not taking his BS too seriously . . . good for him.

it is what the NFLPA agreed on and it does pay that player top 5 money. In the end long term deal is a benefit to both sides and I'm sure both would like to reach a deal

Exactly
Teams and players want long term deals
Deals rarely are about anything but dollars
Dez wants a long term deal not just for the security, but the money
Security sounds better in public but in reality it's about money
If it was just about security his agent would be more interested in the longest contract not the highest paying duh
