Even though I think Barber got a lil too much for not being a starting back or putting up the numbers as one I'm happy we were able to get him locked up for the long haul. Now that he got his money the perceptions will change very quickly for the season. No longer is he the loveable fan favorite back up he's the franchise starter who will be expected to put up big numbers. For the amount of money that he was paid anything less than a 1200yd season is a failure in my opinion the production must meet the expectations of the contract. Some people might not agree with me but the days of putting up enough production to out perform the failing production of Julius Jone are long gone. When that man is out there running that damn ball I'm comparing his production to that of the top backs in the league and I hope he's holding himself to that high standard. I love me some Barber and enjoy his reckless abandoment running style as much as the next person but if he's not playing to the standard of a franchise RB just as fast as the fans fell in love with him they'll turn on him just as quick. What are your thoughts discuss

No doubt about it.

If Barber struggles even just a little and Felix looks good even in limited time, the howls will start.

My gosh, if it can happen with a legend like Emmitt and an idiot like Hamhead, it can surely happen with Barber and a first-round pick like Felix.

I can't wait for the game where barber runs for 20 yards, and Felix goes for 100.

the scene will be a classic

I agree with most of what you say, but I would not expect a 1200 yard season.

He averaged 4.8 yards per carry and I don't think we should reasonably expect him to have a higher yards per carry than that.

That means if he simply matches the yards per carry this season as he did last season he would have to carry the ball 250 times to get to 1200 yards.

Last year he carried the ball 204 times.

We did draft a RB with our first pick in the draft so I would think that the new Jones will get at least the amount of carries the old Jones got.

I think Barber will have a lot of pressure cause not only is he having to play to expectations of that huge contract but we have 2 talented rookie RBs that will definitely be pushing him for playing time so he has to produce. Shoot when Barber asked for the LT type money there were already defectors on the messages boards ready to turn against him so if both the rookies start out performing its gonna be crazy.

And this is bound to happen. The entire dynamic has changed and sometimes it's easier to be the back up. Teams will game plan for Barber more. Unlike JJ however, MB is a football players football player with vision, tenacity and a nose for the endzone. I'm looking forward to the Barber Jones combo.

I understand where you're coming from but its the perception and expectactions that will take over. You ask to be paid like a top 5 RB the fans will expect to see the production of that caliber of a RB. Obviously with us doing a 2 back system itll be more of a uphill battle to get those numbers but its the position he's put himself into.

I agree, 1200 is a bit much. He got paid but that does not mean that he is a fulltime back. He is still sharing the load with another runner, one that should be more compentent than Julius so should get more touches. I still see a fight to break 1000 from both of them.

What numbers did he NOT put up? Are you talking quantity?

His production is quality
  • tough EXTRA yards
  • attitude for the offense - fear in opposing linebackers and forget about the CB's lol
  • double digit TD's per season
Not good enough?

I will take quality over quantity EVERY TIME.

I dont think 1200 is out of the question for Barber to achieve he nearly got a 1000 just being the back up. If Barber is in a groove and tearing it up he'll get more carries than what they planned for during the games. 1000 isnt enough guys just because we run a 2back system lets not tapper down expectations of his production. The money he was paid I dont want anything less than 1200 from him. Some might think thats too high, but i think its a fair mark to set for our franchise back plus I think Jones will be doing more catching out the back field and as a reciever than running the rock.

He didn't get paid to rush for 1200 yards.

He got paid what he did to score TDs. To make momentum changing plays. To bring excitement for the team and fanbase. To punish the defense and make teams have to prepare for him--because that is less time they are preparing for our real star, Romo.

Anyone who looks at the situation and says, "He must get X yards because of his salary" doesn't understand what the point of our offense is or what Barber's role on the team is.

It was a split back system, he wasn't a backup. It is still a split back system and he will probably ge tthe same number of touches if not less since Julius did nada last season (or two). Barber is starter in name but his purpose is not to make the long runs. It is to make the tough yards and the Touchdowns. I would expect Felix to have more yards than Julius did last year, then I would expect Barber to have more than last year. We paid him to be what he has been... not more than what he is.

1300 yards 20+ TD's in order to justify his contract he will have to do this for the next 3-4 years.

You don't have a very good grasp of what the best backs in the league are putting up, do you?

He got a starter's salary, and you've set your expectations for justifying that salary as him being the greatest RB of all time.

He had about 1300 total yards and 12 TD last season. If we can continue to get that, we're getting MORE than our money's worth.

Those people that think Jerry let Julius go just so he could pay the Barbarion more for the same production, are delusional. Jerry paid him with the same expectations that we have... that he will get more carries and therefore more production. It's not unreasonable to think that Barber will get 5 more carries per game and at almost 5 yds per carry, that equals another 80 yds putting him over the 1000 yd mark. To me that still isn't good enough for the money he is getting but at least it's a start.
