Not even LT has put up 1300+ and 20+ TDs for a five year span. Barber had 975 rushing yards and almost 300 receiving yards last season, and is second ONLY to Tomlinson in TDs scored over the past two years. Again, if we can continue to get that, we're getting MORE than our money's worth.

Your expectations are unreasonable. They are a good goal. But as a minimum? That's ridiculous.

1300 yards 20+ TD's in order to justify his contract he will have to do this for the next 3-4 years.

What do you think LT would receive on the open market right now?

I guarantee you it is no where close to what Barber just got.

I'm looking forward to seeing how often Garrett has MBIII and Felix Jones on the field at the same time. Those two could be a tricky combo ....

There is a huge misconception as to why barber was payed so much money

barber got 16 mil guaranteed not for the yards, but for the tough physical TD's he can bring

When its 4 and goal from the 2 yard line, and the winds are 20 MPH and we're on the road at a snowing phili, down by 5 with 2 seconds left.

Thats what we payed barber 16 mil for

When it's fourth and 1 with time running out on our season and we need a first down,

Thats what we payed barber 16 mil for

When we need to pound the ball in the 4th quarter,

thats what we payed barber 16 mil for

you can say we over payed, but i say, when barber gets his 16 TD's, i don't care if he rushed for 16 yards, i will be glad we payed him his 16 mil

So you want LT numbers, from a RB who is no where near LT, and is getting paid what his back up got paid?

This is what we call stupidity.

For the amount of money that he was paid anything less than a 1200yd season is a failure in my opinion the production must meet the expectations of the contract.
The problem with that is, will Barber get enough carries to get 1200 yards?

With the depth we have at RB, it's possible his numbers won't be eye popping at all.

Well he didn't ask for that kinda money... He asked for L.T. money so we will expect and L.T. like performance. He should have thought about that before he went and demanded the type of money he demanded.
As if it isn't hard on running backs enough in Dallas he just went and made it all the more harder on himself. No one was expecting him to be the next Tony or Emmitt but he wants to be paod like a top back so now he has to perform like one end of story.
We don't pay Tony Romo not to screw things up (Come on we aint the Giants) We pay him to put up a top QB performance. We pay T.O. to be a star wide out so why when it comes to Barber do you say... Well we don't pay him to be a top HB we pay him to get the fans going and change the pace of the game. NO! I call BS on that! Do the Chargers pay LT to take attention from Rivers? NO! That is rediculous to even think we should lower our standards. I can't wait for him to fall on his face and Jones and Choice to come save the day.

FWIW, Tomlinson got 60 million, and 21 mil i guarantees, 4 years ago.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/20040814-1657-fbn-tomlinsoncontract.html

You can bet with the newly inflated market, his upcoming deal will dwarf Barber's. It's ALREADY richer than the new contract Barber got. Barber isn;t getting paid like Tomlinson, and he's not getting paid to produce at Tomlinson's level. If you think he is, then you should attempt to get informed.

He didn't get paid to rush for 1200 yards.

He got paid what he did to score TDs. To make momentum changing plays. To bring excitement for the team and fanbase. To punish the defense and make teams have to prepare for him--because that is less time they are preparing for our real star, Romo.

Anyone who looks at the situation and says, "He must get X yards because of his salary" doesn't understand what the point of our offense is or what Barber's role on the team is.

It was a split back system, he wasn't a backup. It is still a split back system and he will probably ge tthe same number of touches if not less since Julius did nada last season (or two). Barber is starter in name but his purpose is not to make the long runs. It is to make the tough yards and the Touchdowns. I would expect Felix to have more yards than Julius did last year, then I would expect Barber to have more than last year. We paid him to be what he has been... not more than what he is.

:clap2:  Agreed. He was paid to get touchdowns and extra yardage nothing more nothing less. But if he gets better numbers than expected then great.

On average, MBIII rushed the ball 12.75 times a game. I don't see that number dropping. Conceivably, as a starter, he should be carrying the ball between 18-20 times per game. He also averaged 2.75 receptions per game. That number should stay about the same with Felix getting some of those dump off passes, too.

Strictly doing the math, if MBIII does get the ball about 20 times a game, that would equate to 1,536 yards if he's able to maintain the 4.8 ypa he averaged last year. Again, all of this is hypothetical.

But, think about last year. Do you guys really think teams game planned against JuJo? Possibly early in the season, but after the first 3-4 games, the talk around the league was that Barber was the better back and all the pundits didn't understand why the Boys stuck with Jones. IMHO, other teams knew Barber was the bread and butter of the running game, but he was the unstoppable force.

I'll take anything 1,200 yds and above with 15+ TDs (rushing and receiving). I guess another factor we would have to look at is whether or not the Boys will be playing on a shorter field this year IF our return game is what everyone is hoping.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see 1200+. I just don't think that is why he got his money. JeJo is paying MaBa to get TD's. MaBa wasn't a yards magnet, he was a TD magnet. Why change what works? No, FeJo will take JuJo's role so MaBa can continue doing what he does best and maybe WaPh can get his first playoff win or we see JaGa run the show next year.

You can't judge MBIII's value by the yards he accumulates. His value is in making momentum changing plays, smashing the ball into the endzone, wearing down the defense with his violent running style and firing up the team and the crowd. Felix and Tashard was drafted precisely so MBIII doesn't have to try to carry the load. He isn't Ladainian and he isn't Adrain Peterson, but his value is still tremendous. We shouldn't judge his value on Fantasy Football criteria, although he will score a lot of TDs.

Fantasy Football expectations from fans will only create a negative situation and give the media something to feed off of. Let's not give them any ammo.....

I think he could get to 1200 yards. hopefully houck could improve our o-line run blocking. not to mention Garrett got pass happy in a few games. than you can add the week 17 game at washington where the o-line didn't feel the need to run block.

I'm not trying ot be a fantasy stat ***** but to think that Jerry paid that much money to Barber and not have the organization expect more production is crazy in my opinion. Barber isnt being paid that much money to come in at the 3yd line where the passing game set it up just to have him get the TD he's been great at doing that and he's expected to continue that but with the huge contract he's expected to be able to do more. People lets be real here our run game has not been anything spectacular. I hear ppl saying that the league fears him NO the league does not fear barber they have great respect for his running style but Barber is not feared in this league. LT and Adrian Peterson are running backs that defenses fear. Can barber improve his game to be a feared back probably but with this contract he's expected to try and take that next step to be that person for us.

At the end of the day, as long as our expectations are high enough that we can turn on him in a few years for not meeting them and insult his effort, ability, family, religion, dedication, and hair style, I'm happy.

Let's not get too specific in this thread, because it's better when the bar we use for evaluating his play moves around from year to year.

Marion Barber has big money, but he's still hungry

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Marion "The Barbarian" Barber got a bunch of money-related ribbing from teammates, which is to be expected for a guy who just signed his first big contract. But Barber vowed not to change after signing a seven-year, $45 contract.

"I'm still going to avoid y'all," Barber said toward the end of a rare instance of him talking to reporters.

Barber's personality is similar to his running style -- straightforward without any flash. But I figured a guy who just got a $12 million signing bonus would treat himself to at least one major purchase.

"I'm going to get me some groceries," Barber said. "I'm hungry."
