New philosophy, or same old stuff

The link goes directly to page 13...the stat is one down from the top. Most games lost to suspensions since 2014. We’re at 100 games lost...Balt is next at 50-something.

To be fair, it's hard to blame the Head Coach for Gregory, RoMc and Hardy. They were high probabilities to get suspended when acquired.

I think Hardy's 4 games were from his actions prior to coming to the Cowboys.

RoMc missed 2016 for offseason antics and never returned.

I would lay Ganjory and Hardy on Booger, that's his play. Garrett did McClain at the behest of his friend, Saban. I do think Hardy was forced on Garrett which is why nothing happened after that clipboard incident on the sideline with Booger calling Hardy a "leader". To date, the single dumbest thing to come out of his mouth.

I do not fault Garrett for these suspensions as he is powerless to control or discipline the team. Any HC that works for Booger accepts the fact that he will be coaching the players Booger wants. He sure as hell got that point across to Parcells and he's as much a control freak as the NFL has had.

Being Garrett is like being a cop with a lenient judge.

True about Hardy, but then his penalty was served out as a Cowboy (we CHOSE to bring him in, knowing he’d likely be suspended) and Hardy’s games-lost still go on our tab.

Wildcatter Jerry has always believed he can get over financially on the rest of the league by rehabbing somebody else’s talented bad boy on the cheap.

Pac-Man, RoMac, Hardy, Gregory coming out of college (I’m sure there’s been a few others of lessor renown)...bargain basement contracts for what Jerry hoped would be consistent top-shelf contributions.

How’s that particular team-building philosophy been working out so far?

heck no! Wade got blame for not being able to "control" the players. Coach clapper gets the same blame.

"take right hand and slam it into the left hand, left hand into the right hand, right hand likes left hand slapping the left hand, process, process good. Robotic sequences ending"..

As long as Jerry’s the final say-so, no mere coach will ever impose consistent, strict discipline on this team — which makes the uncomplaining company-man Garrett the perfect head-puppet.

On the positive side there was minimal investment in those players other than Gregory. Hardy and RoMc were good on the field.

It's way better than Jerry trading for Joey Galloway and Roy Williams.

A common theme this off season was how the organization would be moving forward into a new and different direction. All over the internet, radio, and tv people even claimed that the attitude of Dez, cost Dez his Star. I even heard the same sentiments from SJ and Linehan.

With that being said, why is Red Geezy puting up with embarrassing garbage from guys like Irving and T-Will? I thought he had a philosophy about the RKG's. He talked about how this team was going to progress in a new positive type atmosphere.

In an episode of AON Jerry told the guys "The Star" and it's image was more important than even himself.
I don't buy any of it. I don't buy that JG has more control than fans ever thought. I don't buy the image of "The Star" stands for integrity or is held to any sort of standards. I most certainly don't buy that the organization was moving forward with a new philosophy.

Until guys who are acting like completely worthless human beings are being held accountable, this is the same old bunch, and will have th same old results because of all the distractions!!!

There is a reason 0-23 is the identity of our beloved Cowboys!!!

The cancers are Garrett and Jerry
No new direction till they are still here

Agreed; we’ve really lost little money on any of those players mentioned in your first paragraph. And I’m not one of the ones calling for RG or DI to be cut. We still have them young and on the cheap.

But we gotta ask, how much progress stoppage has occurred while we’ve experimented with rehabbing head cases?

None of the aforementioned ever have, or have yet, in the cases of Gregory and Irving, contributed much towards the big picture (postseason advancement).

Might the time/$$ resources spent on the troubled players have been better spent developing players who may not have quite the talent but bring little or none of the baggage?

Not really
These players take up roster spots that can go to other contributing players
This sort of garbage also gives the coaches and the fans the false impression that they have addressed a need when in reality they haven't

Every fan wants instant gratification. Unfortunately it rarely work that way. The organization still has a responsibility to the cap and looks to maximize the talent they have.

Ive read it here that cutting Twill isnt a sound cap move this season. That said he will likely be gone next year, although I expect he will have to earn his spot this year on an already crowded roster.

As far as Irving goes his immense talent has kept him here. Hes clearly had a terrible off season, riddled with personal problems. Its still not an excuse. In a performance driven league there aren't many legit excuses. Still though, those looking to cut him wont likely get instant gratification. Instead we will get what we can out of him this year and he will walk next season.

While the team may preach integrity it will never trump sound financial reasoning and maximizing production.

Nonetheless these players actions will catch up with them, but no it wont happen overnight. I know thats really frustrating to some of you but this whole idea of making an example out of certain players is kind of silly. The example will be set when these players dont get the contracts they should have.

Not to be a total hypocrite because Ive said "cut that fool" myself plenty of times, but realistically a player has to do something pretty damn heinous for a team to operate with the knee jerk reactions us fans crave.

Yes roster spots are a resource just like cap space and draft picks.

Gregory was a 2nd round pick and that a premium pick. On the positive side he cost zero dollars or roster spots while suspended. If he turns things around he has only accrued 1 season towards free agency.

Irving being suspended at the beginning of seasons is much better than during the season because it allows them to keep an extra player going into the season. By week 5 it's almost always easier to know which player to cut than it is at the beginning of the season. An injury often occurs in those 1st few weeks that makes roster decisions almost automatic. Injuries during the season allow for players to go to IR-return; whereas IR-return dies not help with the roster on the initial cut to 53 because players must be on the 53 before going to IR-return.

Oddly Irving's biggest reason for not contributing in games has been due to injury not suspension. He missed the first 4 games last season due to suspension and the last 4 due to injury; however, they needed him more at the end of the season than the beginning.

By far the worst suspensions are like with Zeke last season where the team either couldn't plan for it or over-planned for it by carrying an extra RB that they likely would not have carried if Zeke's suspension was at the beginning of the season.

The Zeke suspension also cast a dark cloud over Zeke and the team in those games prior to the actual suspension; whereas, players won't really think about David Irving.

This year I would actually like to see TWill suspended at the beginning of the season. It will allow an extra WR to make the 53 and 4/17ths of his guaranteed salary won't count against the cap. It would give him that much more time since breaking his foot before he returns. If they can manage 2 or 4 games without TWill they probably were not winning with him either.

This is a fear of mine. All this big talk about changes. Then I read some comment from a guy on the team or a coach that mentioned it isnt that different. I got a little worried. A lot of wait and see.

Truth is that you could have the best system in place. But unless you have someone calling the game that has some stones, has a feel for the flow of the game, and knows where and when to make certain play calls, it wont matter.

As far as different directions, can't get much different than 13-5, 4-12, 13-4, 9-7. A lot of what these people say, and I mean all of them not just the Cowboys, comes form the "What do we need to tell them" department. Remember Booger making people uncomfortable at Valley Ranch? Alright Booger, sic'em! He didn't do jack. Unless a team is making major changes at GM and on down, it's more lip service.

The NFL is just like politicians, tell me what I want to hear and do what you were going to do anyway. Change does not equate with success. Some just find another way to fail.

I feel for t.will. he's always been a fairly productive player. Wouldn't mind seeing him get a pass. Wrecked his lambo while dui. Insurance isn't going to pay. That's punishment enough. But irving's just a buffoon. Cull him and move on.
