Before a team didnt need permission on a lateral move like from DL coach to DC as is the case with marinelli. But now that is only for assistant coaches being looked at for head coaching jobs. So Marinelli doesnt fall into that category. Tampa cant even speak to Marinelli without Dallas' permission.

Just thought id clear this up because i think some havent heard of the new rule change.

DC.com just had an article that Dallas could release Marinelli in exchange for a draft pick. Someone tweeted Broaddus that the idea was stupid and he replied that this same ownership group gave up 2 #1 picks for Gruden.

Swap the 17th pick and Marinelli for the 7th pick of the draft? I'd do that for sure.

How is the league able to infringe on the movement of coaches? Seems to me this violates something.

How? Coaches are under contract.

Well, one might argue that the contract can be broken by the team if they see fit. So interviewing for another position and breaking the contract should go both ways. The teams and league have an interstate commerce exemption which allows them to operate as a monopoly as sanctioned by Congress.

Just think the employee has some rights and this decree violates those.

But then no one who wants to work again in this league will make a fuss. Just like the draft.

When the team breaks the contract they still have to compensate the coach for the remaining years. Case in point Shanahan is going to get paid the final year of his deal after being fired.

The ways that the team can break the contract are spelled out in the contract, even if it says the team can fire the coach/employee for any reason they choose. The coach willingly signed the contract and accepted the terms - along with a lot of money. And like Doomsday pointed out, the coach will often have some type of "severance" built into the contract if they had enough juice to have it negotiated into the agreement at the start.

Pretty sure that after the Gruden debacle, the NFL ruled out trading coaches for picks. Or has that been changed back now?

The situation with Marinelli falls along the lines of professional courtesy.

If he wants to leave, I doubt Jerry would stop him. He's old enough to just retire and you can't force him to do anything so you'd appear like a giant scumbag to hold someone with his amount of time in the NFL hostage like that.

if a assistant coach leave does he still get money owed based on his contract like when he gets fired?

So the team cannot fire a coach? Really?
Of course they can. But they still have to honor the terms of the contract when they do so, including paying him whatever he's owed under the contract. In fact, the contract will typically spell out of the details of what happens upon termination.

That tweet is wrong. Broaddus liked the idea on Talkin Cowboys

That may be the rule, but if Jerry actually stopped Marinelli from going to Tampa to accept a promotion to Coordinator we would feel the ripple effects in future potential hires. Coaches have a tight fraternity, you don't hold them hostage.
