Newman Is A Tremendous Player, But His Drop Of The INT Was As Big As Cundiff's Botch

Tnew not grabbing the INT is not the same as GIVING Denver 6 points by throwing right to them.

Cundiff throwing away 3 points is also a MUCH bigger play than Tnews' as well imo.

Bledsoe put points on the board for Denver and Cundiff essentially took points away from us.

We disagree.

You know Sarge it's amazing the extent people will go to cast blame on one player when it's so freaking obvious who should be one of the goats for this loss.

It is... I'm just shocked at how some players are cast as the villans of this game when others that deserve censure aren't even mentioned.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too Sarge... :)

Newman to me is starting to approach shut-down, Deion status. And the guy can hit. I noticed one play today where he peeled off the guy he was covering and instantly closed in to make the tackle on another guy who caught the ball (the kind of play that if you saw it quickly you might assume that he had gotten beaten on since he was tackling the receiver.) Plus he had the interception, the fumble recovery and a great hit on Plummer. The dropped one hurt but he made a good play on the ball and it was a difficult ball to catch. Newman has become a true stud and gets my vote for player of the year.

Sarge,

You are way too defensive of the player because you like him. I also like him and wouldn't trade him for any other corner in the league right now.

But forget everything else that happened in the game up until that point. It was a tie game and TNew could have made the single biggest play in the game and he DROPPED it. I guarantee you, TNew is a stand-up player who puts a lot of pressure on himself and I bet he's sitting at Thanksgiving dinner right now saying "I blew it. I had the game in my hands and I dropped it".

That's not dogging him, that's just reality.

Exactly - this is a guy that is playing out of his mind and it seems to me, he is not geting the props he deserves. Not on this board anyway.

Instead of being thankful for how he is playing this year compared to last year (and in fact, how the entire secondary played last year), you have some blaming him for today's loss based on ONE play and not the fact that he played a SICK game overall.

As I said before........scary.

...and I guarantee YOU Cundiff is at his dinner table right now taking full blame for the loss. At at another table, Bledsoe is thinking if he hadn't thrown 6 points the other way, they'd have won the game.

Bledsoes throw and Cundiffs missed kick were FAR more pathetic than Tnews missed INT. He actually had excellent covergae on the play. In fact, he had excellent coverage all game long.

Sarge,

I agree with you. I'm not mad at TNew because he is an absolute stud this year. I'm just disappointed he couldn't hold onto it and I know TNew is more disappointed than me. His real test will come against Steve Smith.

I am mad at Cundiff, because he has one job to do and he CONSISTENTLY misses his first attempt in a game! That's inexcusable.

As for Drew, yes he had some bad plays, but how can anyone blame him when he had to throw it all over the field just to keep us in the game. I'm not upset with him because we don't help him out enough in the running game.
As for his pick, it was offset with Denver's fumble inside the 10 and Bledsoe throwing the TD to Witten on 3rd down.

I think Newman cost himself a pro-bowl bid with that drop. With just about every fan, coach, and player in the league watching... he had a chance to define himself as one of the best in the NFL. He still had a great game though.

I think Newman should be an all-pro this year, but it is hard to make it to that 1st one. Coakley made a few pro bowls based on one INT/score in a Thanksgiving game.

I would like to see Newman make it. I think he deserves it... but guys are cheaper to sign if they don't (see Ellis).

Good point. This game is the single most watched game by everyone in the league, escept for the playoffs and SB. TNew could have reserved a plane ticket to Honolulu if he would have held onto that one. Champ Bailey can go ahead and reserve his, even though he got beat right after his pick.

INTs returned for TDs get you a lot of attention.

Wow! There is some serious misplaced frustration here. Newman was great again today. I've got no complaints with him. Sure, the pick would have been nice, but he played well.

The anti-TNew crew look for anyway to pin the blame on him for anything and everything.

If someone catches a 2-yard pass against him - it's damn TNew. But if Henry gets beat for a 60-yard TD they say it's Henry's style and he'll give up a few.

Personally, I don't get it myself. He is not just the best CB, or the best DB or the best defensive player on the team - he is the best player on the team and it isn't really even all that close.

Good to see someone knows what he's talking about here.

Great post. With a competent corner now helping him on the other side he has regained his confidence and is really coming into his own. I hope he is used more in the return game. We've yet to see the blazing speed this kid has in open space. He is our most improved player on defense.

Pro Bowl and All-Pro are 2 different things. It sounds like you are talking about him making the Pro Bowl. Being selected All-Pro is more exclusive. I doubt he gets selected All Pro. He might have a shot at making the Pro Bowl for the NFC though.

Sarge,
Seriously how do you say that play cost us the game. Anderson gave that one back to us so essentially we were even with turnovers for points.

I know we can look at every play and analyze it but when you are down to the last 5 minutes of the game and after everything that's happened it's tied, the plays made and not made in the last 5 minutes take on MUCH more significance because the pressure is MUCH greater. Remember Parcells talking about players being able to execute in pressure situations? That's what he's talking about. Not plays made in the first quarter.

Let's not go overboard there... Newman is nice but saying he is the best DB on this team is a bit of an overstatement.

Newman's progress has been everything that I have hoped and dreamed for after spending a lottery pick on him. Maybe his dropped catch did not lose the game for us, but it did not win it for us.

Likewise as comparable to the Roy Williams pick in a similar situation, his catch eventually won the game for us. If Roy drops that ball, I'm not saying he would have lost the game for us, but it's obvious a drop would have been a key play that didn't win it for us.

Actually - I don't think very many people agree with you - in fact there is another poll thread asking who is to blame for the loss and the TNew play is not even an option.

Because it shouldn't be.

We disagree - end of story.
