Newman Tackle on Moss

Just saw the replay of the long reception to Moss and reminded me that Moss was actually run down from behind by Newman. No angle. Just purley run down. First time I can remember Newman showing the pure speed he possesses. I think he should shadow Owens to minimize the deep routes. If we play zone they will get a rhythm going and drive the field on us in medium size chunks. We will have more offensive opportunities if we play more more man-to-man. The drives are usually quicker...one way or the other. With Philadelphia having such problems on the d-line we should be able to pass block for a long time with base o-line. If we spread out the offense it will force the Eagles to blitz a pass defender to create pressure. Chip block Kearse with Campbell and go out for a short emergency dump off routes.

Ya i agree about the zone. it is going to allow the eagles to pick us apart. I really hope BP sees this and makes an adjustment instead of just sticking to the exact same plan, and saying he doesnt allow the offense to dictate his defense, which makes absolutely no sense to me.

Newman showed the same speed in pre-season punt returns. He should be doing it for us every now and then.

That run-down of Moss was awesome! I agree i've never seen Moss run down by any other player. I told a friend that I now realize why the scouts were wowing about his speed when he was coming out. We haven't really seen that before.

The player we have to worry about, IMO, is Westbrook. TO is going to get his to some extent or another. Westbrook and his short routes can go long.

Westbrook, if my memory serves me correctly, killed us in the Monday night game last year, along w/Mcnabb of course. :bang2:

Right on about using TNEW to return punts. I though BP wants his guys to play ST :)

i'm starting to think since Tnew isnt one of Parcells beloved "parcells guys" we have a better chance of seeing us trading for Vinny Testeverde back there on punts then Tnew

He averaged 122 yards against us last year. A little heavier on the passing side than the rushing side. But other than the SF game Westbrook has been more of a threat recieving than rushing this year.

newman ran a 4.2 in pre draft workouts. and had a 42 inch vertical leap, I remember it from the draft because I wanted us to draft him so badly.

Had we been able to score on that last drive and win... Newman would have been the hero.

You would be very correct in that opinion!
short passes to Westbrook is their running game. They screen and flare out teams to death. In fact, I would wager that if a defense were to play screen pass and flat routes first against the beagles, they'd do pretty well against them, those are about 70% of their plays. Its amazing that run the same plays over and over for about 5 years now with continued success.
BO is going to get some catches. Controlling Westbroke is the key to stopping the iggles though.
We also better watch out because I was watching Mcnubb last week, this guy isn't injured. He was moving as well as I've ever seen him, save maybe college.

I've watched that run-down at least 20 times. I've never seen Moss caught from behind before. Moss was at full gallop with a 5 yard lead, and Newman made him look like he was running in sand. For every stride Moss took, Newman took two. It was one of the most amazing feats of speed that I've ever seen.

Ran a 4.39 at combine - rumors of 4.2 "campus" times. He's real fast. I'm not sure but Moss I'm not sure at his size is world class speed like Tnew and some of the sprinters. He's usually on the move - and no one in position to "run him down".

In this instance I believe Moss ran a deep crossing pattern from opposite side as Tnew. Hit the seam and toasted safety but as he caught pass he was drifting to his right some and hesitated briefly.

Tnew read play - saw the busted coverage and was at full steam in pursuit well before pass was even caught.

Impressive hustle and speed on Tnews part indeed. :starspin

Newman didn't run a 4.2 before the draft. He ran a 4.37 at the combine. I've got the results saved on my computer so I'll double check it when I get to it (on a diff computer right now).

Rack - I posted an article that referenced a 4.39 Combine but my recolection was he ran a 4.37 as well. It was ballsy at the time as most high rated guys like that never run. Tnew knew he was fast.

I totally agree. And it's not his speed that I'm impressed with, but the fact that he actually made the play. How many guys would even try? But TNew didn't just try, he busted his butt down the field and made a good tackle. That is huge imo. Like you say, could have changed the game.

It was an impressive feat by Newman no doubt but I think Moss clearly has lost a step. If you remember, he ended up last year with some leg and foot problems and I believe I read somewhere that he has an issue with his foot or feet that he just has to play through.

If you notice...he really wasn't pulling away from Davis, and no one has claimed that Davis is that fast.
