we dont know if anything was announced, allen went over and told 2-3 cowboy players who was eligible, and he told them the wrong one,
he never even talked to 70.
det HC is a idiot, sure but allen screwed up on that play too.
The lions deserve to lose because cambell kept going for 2 instead of going to OT.
It was announced that 70 is eligible over the loudspeaker for everyone to hear. Watch this clip with the audio on and you can hear it loud and clear.

“You’re not going to believe this, but the NFL is blaming the Lions for a blown call that cost them a win vs. the Cowboys on Saturday night.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the NFL has no plans to change the rules on players reporting as eligible after Saturday night’s fiasco in Dallas. And it’s not placing blame on the refs.

“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the NFL does not plan to change the procedure for players reporting as eligible. The league views the situation as an effort by the Lions to engage in deception and gamesmanship that backfired,” Florio said.

“Basically, the Lions wanted the Cowboys to think Skipper was reporting as eligible and that Decker was not. Which would have caused the Cowboys to cover Skipper, not Decker, when the play unfolded. The problem is that, in trying to confuse the Cowboys, the Lions confused Allen.”

Then Campbell who was cheating should be sanctioned and fined. This jack rabbit caused refs to be besmirched and for people to beleive they were robbed when it was just cheating plain and simple. This guy is a no good scumbag and his legacy will make this apparently

Open your pie hole and look the damn ref in the eye and say I’m eligible. That’s how my college coach woulda worded it when installing a game plan for the week. You screw up or the team screws up, then it’s a foot in your arse come film review day on Monday.

Sounds like too many excuses coming from Cowboys haters to me.

The ref could have clarified, but I think the rule is that the team has to make it clear who is eligible. Either way, the Lions only have themselves to blame.
But that's part of the leagues wiggle room that I find ridiculous. The refs have a job to do. The team needs to do their part. The refs need to do their part, not try to hide behind a convenient excuse. If they screwed up, say so.

I get that, but again, it's still stupid of the Lions to begin with considering that olinemen who are being declared eligible are announced as such on the PA system. Thus, the Lions ended up winning a stupid prize.

Dumb article, but correct conclusion, just like on game day.

For me the bottom line is this: the Lions had notice that the refs got it wrong when 70 was announced as eligible instead of 68, and took no action to stop the play by notifying the refs of their mistake.
Exactly this!

Tell me, what about that play would require a pre game conference with a ref? The actual play was cut and dry. Very simple.
"Hey ref, just so you know, we're going to pretend #70 is reporting as an eligible receiver, but it's really gonna be #68. Also, we're gonna have #58 line up in such a way that the Cowboys are going to question whether you announced #68 or #58. I know it's dishonest, but you're in, right?"

Yeah even if the conversation went down exactly as Campbell said it did the refs would have come back with something like "You can do all the shenanigans you want but we have to notify the defense who is declaring eligible. We can't neglect to report one just because you think it's clever."

How is this still a topic?

The ref was clear that he called out that #70 was the eligible receiver. #68 or the coaching staff could have called the ref over to clarify.
To me, it was a trick play not only on the Cowboys but the refs too but it didn't work.

That’s what totally changed my mind. They actually attempted to enlist the refs in their deception but Allen wasn’t in that pregame meeting. He was supposed to know to ignore anything 70 does as he is running on the field but 70 actually motioned like he was eligible to throw off the Cowboys and Allen took that for what it was and announced him. It’s obvious by the response and post game interviews. 68 says he did was he was told to do which was make no hand jesture but meakly say report. 70 was screaming on the field that he didn’t say a word which is true but he did the typical hand jesture which the Lions wanted the refs to ignore which was the reason for the pregame meeting. Cheating all the way around and I’m glad they didn’t get away with it.

Lions fans still complaining about the call on a play that should never have taken place in the first place. The tripping called on Herdershot was supposed to be against the Lions. That would have ended the game right there.
