Are you saying that he broke his contract? Saying "High profile NFL player" is a qualifier. If it's not because of the celebrity, then just say he broke his contract.
What I think is dumb is people making an incident more than it is because he's an athlete. Not whether or not the rules are dumb.
Fine, NFL player. Being high profile just makes his actions more noticeable in public which he should be aware of and take appropriate precautions.
Pretty much no one here thinks his specific actions were a big deal, it’s the fact that he’s already been in trouble and continues to push the envelope. None of us would care if it was a one time incident. None of us would care if we didn’t want the Cowboys to win. We care because he has continued to show poor judgement and puts himself, and therefore his team and teammates, in a bad spot.
Again, it has less to do with he’s an athlete and more to do with he plays for a league/company/organization that has a certain set of rules he continues to defy. It’s not like football players are the only ones, there are plenty of professions that are held to higher standards and the people in those professions either abide by those standards (at least in public if they’re smart) or they won’t have a job. This isn’t specific to the NFL.
For example, with my job, I just had a buddy that got a slap on the wrist for a bogus accusation against him. Fair or not, he was disciplined because fighting it would have brought too much attention that he didn’t want to deal with plus monetary costs. About a year later, he had another slip up. Completely different than the first but what would have been not a huge deal became much bigger because this was now the second time he had a run in with the employer (the second time was completely on him and he acknowledged that). He was punished for the second time as well but was told next time his name comes up for ANYTHING, negative or perceived to be negative, then he’ll be fired. Both of his infractions would have been pretty minor and not even punishable in some companies but not this one. It’s now up to him how he wants to handle himself on the job and outside of the job. BTW, the second infraction didn’t even happen at work, it was on his personal time.
The NFL and athletes in general are hardly the only employees held to a certain standard. The difference is they are much more recognizable so have to be more careful. Like it or not, that’s the price they pay for their profession and with the money they make I don’t think it’s too much to ask of them for such a small portion of their lives.
