So if the defense secures a safety on the first possession, the game must be over as well. We better get that language clarified quickly.
That's what John Clayton said on Mike & Mike this morning. Makes it even more convoluted. You can win by 2 pts in OT, but not with 3.

Hell, why not just say you can win with a FG as long as it's within 40 yards. Anything outside 40 yards, and the other team gets a possession cause you got lucky.

EDIT: Oh.... and. It's just for overtime games in the playoffs. Translation: You're only going to see this "rule" like once every 5 years, and never in a Super Bowl if current statistics hold.

They could just make overtime a sudden death match between the kickers.
That's almost what is was becoming before the change.

They needed to fix something---you should not have nearly a 50% greater chance of winning just because you win a coin toss.

I actually think the rule is OK... no strong opinion either way. But in a couple years there will be 2-3 players injured after the 1st team scored a field goal. There will then be discussion as to whether the rule is increasing injuries in the game.

Startegically things are going to get interesting. Team with the first possession will be caught up on whether to go for it, kick it, or even punt the ball. Obviously down and distance and where the ball is will factor in but it will definitely be interesting.

Cant wait to hear the announcers jump all over each other w/ all the possibilities about to come into play.

Not only that Troy, w/ the new rules, they could choose to play defense first

I dont know, thats awfully risky Joe, But we shall see what will unfold shortly here

Just wondering, but why is this "breaking news" when the next playoff game is over eight months away?

I thought about this too and NEARLY created a brand new thread on whether you take the ball first or kick..Ultimately I decided it was absolutely stupid to not take the ball first..given the current situation, most believe the team with the ball first is going to win the game with at least a FG..if you kick and go down 3, only way you win is by scoring a TD..you might as well take the ball first and score a TD..so I dont see how it makes any sense to not take the ball first.

Has an OT gave ever ended on a safety?

I don't think that's something we need to worry about often. :)

Because the vote just passed today? That hard to figure out?

Well an OT never ended on a blocked punt before and that ended up happening to us, so..

For 1 reason if the team who gets the opening kick gets a FG and then kicks off then the other team knows they have 4 downs to keep the ball moving instead of 3 downs and punt.
