For 1 reason if the team who gets the opening kick gets a FG and then kicks off then the other team knows they have 4 downs to keep the ball moving instead of 3 downs and punt.

Yeah, and what happens if you miss a tackle or two and give up a fluke TD? You don't get another chance.

Teams will take the ball first every time. Nothing changes. The sudden death element is still there, but you need a TD. Anyone thinking they'd actually choose to kickoff first is off their rocker.

Vast majority of OT games end in 3 points that is just fact the other team then know they must get 3 at the very least meaning 4 downs does not mean anything to them but the team who gets the opening kicks can't just go for it on 4th down. I would think teams who do have outstanding defense and wind conditions in their favor very well could opt for kicking off.

Yuck.

Plain and simple. I hate everything about this.

Leave the darn game alone.

Basically because teams can't put it into the endzone and force a touchback, the rules have to be adjusted?

I think the rule sucks.

Owners voted it, let em have it I suppose.

I just think it completely takes the thrill of sudden death out of the game.

Even dumber is the idea that playoff games are so much more important than regular season games. If you are going to adopt new rules, doing it all the time.

Is a week 16 game that has serious playoff implications and less worthy than any of the playoff games?

I like it. Makes sense. Just like they moved the goal post to the back of the endzone, they brought in the 2 pt conversion and you have to change your shorts the next day ...change has to happen.

Why? For the sake of change?

They need to approach this like science. The conditions should be the same for the regular season and the playoffs. You are trying to measure the best teams, so the conditions should be the same. You have to win in the regular season to get to the playoffs. You don't change the rules during the experiment or season. They should be constant.

If you do it in the playoffs, you should do it during the regular season. Third graders know this.

Because it’s not fair. Show me one sport that has overtime where only one team gets a chance to score? And don’t say the defense can score ...everyone knows the rules favor the offense in todays game.

Coaches aren't happy with rule change

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 23, 2010 5:38 PM ET

This much we know: The new overtime rules for the playoffs didn't have the support among coaches that it did with ownership.

The group is even less pleased with how the rule change was voted on. Coaches don't have a vote, but they expected to be in the room when the vote happened.

It was originally set for Wednesday, but ownership quick-snapped the vote while coaches participated in a golf tournament Tuesday.

Jay Glazer tweets: "Coaches and execs were supposed to be in the room. It was supposed to be done tomorrow, not today. These coaches are beside themselves."

ESPN's Chris Mortensen says there is precedent for such a plan.

"This is what happened when 2-point conversion passed; it's an end-around with the procedure by voting this afternoon instead of Wednesday," Mortensen tweeted.

How fair is it that one team sucks more than others?

How fair is it that the Patriots have Tom Brady and the Broncos have Brady Quinn?

Lifes not fair. You either take advantage of your opportunities (60 minutes worth of opportunities) or you lose the ****ing game.

Works the same way with the draft, free agency and damn near everything. You make the most out of what you have or you lose.

Oh stop with the lifes not fair stuff ...this is a game played with rules designed to be fair for both teams. I think it makes sense.

I thought about this too and NEARLY created a brand new thread on whether you take the ball first or kick..Ultimately I decided it was absolutely stupid to not take the ball first..given the current situation, most believe the team with the ball first is going to win the game with at least a FG..if you kick and go down 3, only way you win is by scoring a TD..you might as well take the ball first and score a TD..so I dont see how it makes any sense to not take the ball first.

not necessarily true, if you kick a FG to tie it again then it goes into sudden death meaning the game is not over just yet and first team to score any points after that wins

Because the vote just passed today? That hard to figure out?
McKay just said they have been talking about this for 8 years. In NFL playoff history this new rule would have had an effect on only 3 games. As I mentioned before the playoffs are over 8 months away. That qualifies as "breaking news" now? Really? I'll buy "There is a new rule for overtime games" but "breaking news?" Comon' man.

Breaking news is breaking news.. the rule change was confirmed today, so it'd be considered breaking news.

And OT hockey is some of the most exciting moments in sports.

Exactly... The NFL just made a dumb mistake!

Technically yes, it still doesn't change the fact that it doesn't make sense to kickoff first.

I just realized they are going to discuss changing this for all the games in MAY. Wth is going to change between now and then? Why wasn't this
discussed already? Why not wait til next year at this point? That makes no sense to me.
