They don't per se. After some of the hurricanes there was a little run of places with them but never really took off. The current building codes are pretty stringent so anything new is gonna be able to handle most anything. Some are built with the whole home generator system built in.

I live in ground zero- Cutler Bay Florida. I have evacuated and am on the road now heading north. The trip has been tough- Mile long lines for gas at every rest area on Florida turnpike- coupled with bumper to bumper slow traffic all the way into South Carolina. I am very worried about my home- and what will be left when I get back. Hopefully everything will be ok, but as long as I have my family that's the most important part.

I am in Fort Myers, FL and we are staying through the storm. We are hunkered down, ready to go into seclusion. Depending on the model you watch, we are directly in it's path. There was a shift East yesterday that made it look better for the West Coast of Florida, and then it turned today back toward the West a little bit so could go right up the middle of the state. The roads are so packed that it is taking 20 hours to get what would normally take less than 5. Staying here, we have gas, water, food, etc. If we leave, no way to know how soon we can come back and lack of gas to even get back is a big issue. And having lived through other storms and having worked on Hurricane Andrew relief, I know how bad the looters and just plain thieves can be when there is no one around to stop them. Someone tries to come into my house without my permission is going to be in for a rude welcome.
I wish u a lot of luck this weekend, let us know how you make out. This one is supposed to be the most brutal ever, hopefully it changes course somewhat. We are just starting to look into moving to the Sarasota area next summer hopefully, once this house sells. What are your overall impressions of Fl? I'm 60 and just retired in June so job mkt is a non issue. THX and Good luck.

I am a Florida lifer so hard to compare. Have lived in Texas for a short period as well. Sarasota area is nice, the downtown area is very nice. The summers are hot, outside of that Florida living is pretty nice.

is yours a typical Florida style home? I know some seem vulnerable to hurricanes.
All the best and get on line as soon as possible give us a shout

Stay safe, mate. Hopefully, the Cowboys will give you something to smile about Sunday night.

While I will be thinking of those in the way of this hurricane, I'm kind of all hurricaned out after Harvey. Just give me football all weekend and I'm good.

Typical meaning concrete block with stucco? Yes. Roof to current codes with straps, tighter nailing pattern, etc. There are a fair amount of frame homes....I would certainly feel less safe in one of those. We have a hip roof also, which is also safer in hurricane than gable so we have a lot of things going for us. We are also away from the water so that also helps us in the rising water scenario.

"hurricaned out"?

Hurricanes are a fiction show you are bored with? Massive number of people lose everything...others die...but no worries... you got your football?

I'm sure you didn't mean it this way...but...

Reports of my death are highly exaggerated.
I'm truly disheartened by your choice to stay and endure the wrath of Irma when you had ample time to get out. I think I'm talking to a dead man but I wish you the best of luck in this. I've been praying and will continue to pray for your safety. I truly wish you well.
