I am in Fort Myers, FL and we are staying through the storm. We are hunkered down, ready to go into seclusion. Depending on the model you watch, we are directly in it's path. There was a shift East yesterday that made it look better for the West Coast of Florida, and then it turned today back toward the West a little bit so could go right up the middle of the state. The roads are so packed that it is taking 20 hours to get what would normally take less than 5. Staying here, we have gas, water, food, etc. If we leave, no way to know how soon we can come back and lack of gas to even get back is a big issue. And having lived through other storms and having worked on Hurricane Andrew relief, I know how bad the looters and just plain thieves can be when there is no one around to stop them. Someone tries to come into my house without my permission is going to be in for a rude welcome.
Y'all be safe my brother! And God bless!

I'm truly disheartened by your choice to stay and endure the wrath of Irma when you had ample time to get out. I think I'm talking to a dead man but I wish you the best of luck in this. I've been praying and will continue to pray for your safety. I truly wish you well.

Let's just say I am in better position to determine the level of risk that I am facing than you are.

I've never seen someone so insulted by prayers and well wishes in my whole life. I'd think it's funny if the situation wasn't so serious. But seriously, I'm not going to stop praying for the safety of everyone in the path of Irma, even you my friend. :)

You are the one who keeps criticising him at every turn for his decision to stay.

Then, he gets short with one reply.

Then, you get butt hurt.

Gee. I can't fathom why he got short with you. Prayers for you that you get a clue.

Forces of nature are going to impose themselves on opening weekend football...and cast a pall...whether we like it or not.

Irma looks to be the worst hurricane to ever come ashore our lands...and over a million people could lose their home. There will be fatalities as surely some will resist evacuation.

I'm anticipating the weekend with the weirdest mix of emotions ever.

This is a game the Cowboys need to and should win.

It has had wind speed over 170mph...and 50-80 feet off the ground...wind speed close to 200mph. The past few days it has stayed cat 5 with winds rivaling strongest hurricane or typhoon ever.

It may lose some punch as it crosses islands and such, moves north...but it's still a Mike Tyson storm.

Irma is a nice girls name. They should have named it Iffany. Notice the T missing? That represents truth.

My prayers are with all you Floridians. I love that state. Have vacationed there numerous times.

Your well wishes in between your "RIP" postings and "dead man" postings are like kicking someone in the balls and then saying you are sorry about it.

Not sure where I have displayed being "so insulted by prayers and well wishes". Simply pointed out that I know the risk I face better than someone on the outside. I know my town. I know my house. I know my preparations. I am not in a flood plain, so the flooding risk for me is minimal. Even the highest projected storm surge would be less than 1 ft where I am. Through multiple other hurricanes and tropical depressions, etc it has not been an issue. Our house is built to the most current codes as are the houses directly around us. We don't have a lot of large trees close to us so not really a risk of falling branches.

Should we feel that we need to leave at the last minute, there are available shelters within 5 minutes from our house in several directions. If it stays on it's current track, we could be be on the road and outside of the cone in an hour and a half.

I appreciate any well wishes and accept the consequences of our decisions.

Feeling a little stressed? Understandable considering what possibly lays ahead for you. I apologize for any comment I made that you perceive as a "kick in the balls". I really only wish you well and hope the best for you.

Actually not very stressed at the moment. Feeling pretty calm. I think the fact that we have done our prep and got our supplies has made it easier to deal with. I have worked disaster duty after Hurricane Andrew and many other catastrophes, including the Northridge Earthquake. There is a certain amount of dread when Jim Cantore pulls in and sets up about 5 miles from your house...you know the ish is real.

The lead up to the storm has been interesting. Seen a level of cooperation from people that has been much higher than normal. Neighbors helping each other. People sharing tools and equipment and offering up extra shutters, plywood, etc. Updates on where you can get gas and ice. Amazed at the dedication of employees at supply places like the Big Box stores and locally owned stores. Opening their doors well past a reasonable time to accommodate as many people as possible, even when they really should have been taking care of their own safety.

Stay safe dude. You sound like you know what you are doing. I hope everything turns out ok for you and your family.

Looks like you are in the bull's eye in Fort Myers as the storm tracks more toward FL. Good luck, buddy. God bless.

I'm in the center of the state myself.

My parents ( when they were alive) had a time share down in Ft.Meyers, and although this might appear as adding Zero substance to the conversation, it should clearly illustrate to the astute just how closely intertwining and revelant ,,,er,,,it could beo_O

Right now just a light breeze. Last update was positive for us...hasn't ramped up in intensity and calling for it to be category 3 right now. Still crazy strong. By the time we wake up will know if it has made the predicted northern turn. Sad thing is what may be good news for us is bad news for someone else. The annoying thing is that it's novement speed has slowed down....the slower it goes the longer we wait...and will hit in the middle of the night instead of late afternoon. Would hate for it to stall over us like Harvey did in Houston.

Latest report I saw said it will move more quickly through Florida as the day tomorrow proceeds. It's not expected to stall.

May increase to Cat 4, but back to cat 3 when arriving in your area, according to what I just saw.

But I'm sure your tracking all the same news...

I'm in San Antonio. That sucker (Harvey) was supposed to hit us according to forecasts, but stopped about even with the city about 90 miles to the east, then changed direction and went over Houston and parked. Was relieved it cleared our city, but felt awful for the Houstonians.

Hurricane Charley hit directly about 30 miles north of us and did the same thing.....was supposed to go up the coast but when it got parallel with our area made a turn in that was not predicted. One of the local stations picked up on it before any of the national services and got some warning out so I am familiar with the uncertainty. Until it is gone we won't rest easily.

I couldn't convince my father to leave his west coast home, just north of Tampa, so I made the "green mile drive" over on I-4 over to his home yesterday to be with him. Very eerie watching the traffic all going the opposite direction.
