I don't like the horse collar tackle rule changed...grabbing by the name plate?....it makes it too subjective. There have already been too many bad calls on this anyway, when the is not inside the collar. And it's not review-able. So now. like the catch rule, they change it to let the official be even more subjective, but it makes them right and not wrong.
So is grabbing the jersey near the nameplate close to the sleeve going to be called. Let's just make tackling from behind a penalty also.

NFL gets worse and worse.

I guess the other rules will be discussed more today, or possibly some shelved to the next meetings.
Or some will be tried in preseason games.

They have the intentional grounding rule, that is good enough. Qbs should be able to throw it in the direction of a receiver (RB,TE,WR) even if it is an obvious non catchable throw .

I think it is fair for aqb to throw the ball even while in initial grasp of a defender, before progress is stopped of course

Def needs to beat the QB to it basically, rule as is is fine

I'm not sure you understand the rule proposal. It is to eliminate the ability of the QB to just merely throw it near the LOS when he is out of the pocket to avoid the sack. It's not about getting it in the vacinity of the receiver. It's for situations like in the GB/Dal game last year when Rodgers was pressured back and towards the sideline and he just tossed the ball at the goal line which was about 15 yards from anyone. With the rule proposed, that would be intentional grounding, as it should be.

I don't like that the qb can step just outside the pocket and chuck it way out of bounds to avoid a sack. Would like to see it read something like must be within 5 yards of eligible receiver.

Would see allot more ints. Also running game would become all more important

Well that would be outside the hash marks and legal. I am OK with that. My opinion everyone has their own. I think you have to leave a way for QB to get rid of ball outside of risking an int

No, it's a stupid and cheap rule. If the QB has nobody to throw to and defenders bearing down on him for a clear would be sack, he shouldn't be able to just toss it to no man's land or out of bounds to save his butt. Pretty much the exact opposite of "just blowing on the QB."

He can't he still has to be outside the tackle and ball needs to get past line of scrimmage. I want the QB to be able to get rid of the ball when no one is open and avoiding a loss on the down or forcing the ball into coverage.

[quote
  • By Competition Committee; Makes it a foul for delay of game when a team attempts to call a timeout when it is not permitted to do so.
So icing a kicker is now a foul for delay of game ???[/quote]

I think this is more about those times like the one against us last year when (I can't remember who it was) the opponent either used a timeout it didn't have or when it wasn't supposed to and was not penalized for it. A team is permitted to call a timeout when icing a kicker.

Bingo. This was probably an input from the Cowboys. Ole' Pete the Cheat attempted to call a second TO in a row to prevent a 12-men on the field penalty and the ref, instead of ignoring it, blew the whistle and voided any flags. That was a field goal try inside the redzone and would have resulted in a 1st and goal for us. Now...it was Cassell at QB and the first or second game back for Dez so it wasn't like a guarantee that we would have had 7 instead or 3, but who knows. Also, late in the final seconds of the 4th, IRRC, Russell dived out of bounds but the refs kept the play clock running. We ended up losing by a point. I'm not saying we were robbed of a victory, I'm just stating that the poor officiating robbed us at a CHANCE of a victory.

That's the one.

There is...throw it in the vicinity of the receiver. If you can't do that before the defense gets to you...sack. Outside the pocket is such a cheap out for the QB.

Touchbacks on kickoffs now come out to the 25 yd line. Unless you have a dynamic returner, I wouldn't return anything out of the end zone any longer.

yes, but at least make it so he has to attempt to throw near someone. The chucking it into the stands or at the ground 1 foot past the LOS while he is running away from a potential sacker is garbage to me.

just tighten that up a little.

on the flip side, I am amazed at how many times QB's still run out of bounds a few yards behind the LOS while being chased - just toss the ball into the sideline right before you step out of bounds and its an incomplete pass instead of a few yards lost. you could even lob it underhanded or basically drop it out of bounds a few feet in front of you. But still we see QB's just run out of bounds with the ball a few yards short of LOS.

NOT a fan of the 25 yardline touchback thing. It's just there so more teams can come back under a minute to play and win by mriaculous field goal. It has to do with ratings. Just my opinion.

I have no problem with the rule and as you said QB still try to make the plays but there are times when any smart QB will see he has no where to go and instead of taking the big hit or forcing the ball into coverage he will throw it away. I don't see the league getting rid of this rule as much as they try to give the QB some added protection.

Probably not as the level of play and scoring tends to drop dramatically when a quality starting Qb goes down. Thst will impact highlights and ratings. Plus teams have so much money tied up in that position.

QB's still allowed to chuck the ball away to avoid sack - was hoping that would change

I don't have a problem with the rule, I just hate the lack of enforcement of the rule. It's supposed to be that the QB has to be outside the pocket and another part of the rule is the ball has to get back to the line of scrimmage. It gets muddied a bit on screens. I think there should be an attempt to get the ball to the receiver somewhere near the receiver (even if its at their feet). Part of the issue with screens is that there is a lot of holding allowed by the defense, so you have to cut the offense some slack if the screen isn't there.

The stuff that Eli is allowed to get away with is ridiculous.

Yeah QB capable of playing at this level are hard to come by and once you get to backup it becomes much harder to win. There are some rules pertaining to protection of the QB I don't care for. I think hands to the face of the QB even when you barely touch them goes a bit over board. However when it comes to the QB being able to protect himself by throwing it away as long as he is outside the tackle box and the ball crosses the line of scrimmage I think is fair. Even at that it is not that easy when a QB is being forced 15 yards or so from the line to get enough on it to make to the line of scrimmage. Lastly we still see the call of illegal grounding take place.
