NFL Penalizing Salary Cap for Cowboys and Commanders

Albert Breer ‏ @AlbertBreer

More I think about it, the more I'd be angry about this penalty if I were Dallas or Washington. ...

... Here's the question Skins/Cowboys can ask: What about the teams who cut payroll and violated the previous salary floor?

They should go away entirely, the Cowboys and Commanders are being penalized for choosing to NOT participate in collusion.

Oh I totally agree. It is absolute nonsense

But how long could it take? This leaves quite a bit of uncertainty for both teams tomorrow

Will contracts be approved for the Commanders and Cowboys?

This puts both teams at a competitive disadvantage

And the argument in the inverse - dumping players to accelerate cap hits into the uncapped year - is completely ignored by the league.

Any scheme that doesn't account for this or other 2010 transactional distortions is unenforceable IMO. This is cherry picking at it's worst.

Roll it into 2013 and fight it in the meantime. Use the cap space this year, or whatever the team was going to use.

Doesn't seem the NFL has anything to stand on. I guess that's the decision each club has to make.

by the way, how did the Skins actually learn they were going to be penalized for $36mm? Nothing in writing obviously. Did Snyder get a phone call? or Allen from the league?

I'm not a practicing attorney yet, and I would of course have to do further research...

...but this whole act by the league absolutely stinks of a violation of at least 15 USC 1, and possibly 15 USC 2.

that's what i'm hoping they do too but i'm wondering why it's already been announced that we will split up the $10M btw this season and next.

But was that announcement even offical by the Cowboys? The only official annoucement that I've seen is that the Cowboys have denied any wrongdoing and have complied by the league rules.

What does Southern Cal have to do with it;)

Why you gonna waste the pork rinds tricky?

Make 'em thirsty enough to actually drink the warm Old Milwaukee, of course...

I mean, would you drink that crap if you weren't desperate for hydration??

Yhea, we got ratted out by 30 other NFL teams.

I keep going back to the fact we're basically being fined by the league for not engaging in collusion...

You are inserting supposition for fact. Short of reading the NFL charter we cannot make any claims to the authority granted the commissioner. We jsut do not know.

Now even if he has the authority to unilaterally decide to impose cap changes on teams which we do not know that he does, then using competitive imbalances from contracts that his office approved when their was no cap in place is specious as well.

The owners granted the commissioner unlimited power in dealing with players but i doubt they gave similar carte blanche over themselves. We will find out though because the initial response from the clubs was not compliance.

I'll give you that. We do not know, however I'm just making an assumption based on what we have seen in the past.

Since you said it though, I looked around to see if I could find some info.

Found a 2006 revision of the NFL Constitution and Bylaws if you're interested.

I don't care to read though it, I'm not really sure how to interpret it but there is a section on the powers of the commissioner regarding punishment that includes a list of things he can do, including referral to the Executive Committee with any sort of recommendation he deems to be appropriate.

Now, does that answer the question? I don't have a clue because I really haven't the foggiest idea really what I am reading.

this from someone that worked in the packers front office for years. I am beginning to think the League might have stuck a certain organ into a meat grinder.

it was from Josh Ellis twitter..and he works for DC.com so i'm assuming he got it from the organization.

he also said don't assume the Cowboys will sue b/c that would not be good politically for Jerry, who needs the owners votes to get another Super Bowl in Dallas.
