Adding a veteran cornerback remains a possibility for the Titans, though according to Reese, it is not currently a front-burner issue. The Titans have had visits with Ty Law and Ahmed Plummer and could still sign one of them in time for training camp, but first would have to create the cap space to do so.

A high-ranking Chiefs official said Priest Holmes would undergo more neurological tests in late June and early July to help determine whether the running back can continue playing football. But even if those tests do not yield the answers that Holmes or the Chiefs want, Kansas City already has developed a contingency plan. The Chiefs are considering the idea of placing Holmes on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, which means the running back and the team could delay any decision on the player's future until the fall. If Holmes were able to return, the Chiefs would be thrilled to get back a player of his caliber. If not, they would have exhausted every option possible, giving Holmes as much time as he needed to return.

The grievance that the Lions filed against wide receiver Charles Rogers, trying to reclaim about $10 million of his $14.4 million rookie signing bonus, is expected to be heard next month. But no matter how it is resolved, Rogers still is expected to be with the team in training camp. The team has made the decision to bring Rogers, the second overall pick in the 2003 draft, to training camp and give him a chance to try to display the vast talents he has. There was some talk the Lions would trade or release him, but there was scant interest around the league in Rogers and Detroit wants to see if Mike Martz's offense can help the wide receiver reach his potential.

Titans general manager Floyd Reese said, despite the ugliness of how the Steve McNair situation has devolved with the quarterback prohibited from working out at Baptist Sports Park for the past seven weeks, his preference would be to find a workable solution for McNair in Tennessee. Asked if there is a chance the two sides could work out a deal that would prevent McNair from being traded or released, Reese replied, “Absolutely.”

The Lions have until July 15 to negotiate a long-term contract with offensive tackle Jeff Backus and not risk losing the franchise-player designation for the duration of the contract. Backus was designated the franchise player Feb. 23. He recently signed the one-year tender that guarantees him a base salary of $6.98 million for 2006. As a concession to get Backus to sign the tender, the Lions agreed not to use the franchise or transition tags on Backus next year, when he will become an unrestricted free agent again if he has not signed a new contract.Z o n e |

Texans scouts worked out two players after practice Wednesday — former NFL fullback/running back Robert Holcomb and wide receiver Derrick Lewis. Each is 30 years old. Lewis, who competed for a roster spot during training camp with Tampa Bay last season, currently plays in the Arena Football League. Texans wide receivers coach Kyle Shanahan was with the Bucs last season and worked with Lewis there. Holcomb could fill a void at fullback.

Kicker Paul Edinger has decided to wait until training camp to sign with a team. He is taking the approach that other kicking veterans such as Morten Andersen and Gary Anderson have adopted in other seasons. They waited for a team to grow unhappy with its kickers before opting for a more reliable veteran option.

Steelers linebacker Joey Porter claimed his absences from voluntary workouts had nothing to do with his contract situation, despite reports to the contrary. "None of it is right," Porter said. "None of it." Asked if he wanted to set the record straight and address speculation surrounding his perceived dissatisfaction with his contract, which has two years remaining, Porter dismissed the opportunity. "I'm not going to get in a war of words," he said. "None of it is right."

Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer and the driver of a car involved in an accident with Plummer are holding fast to their versions of what happened on the streets of Englewood on April 20. Plummer, who has been issued a summons by Englewood police in connection with the incident, admitted Wednesday he cut off the other driver, Doug Stone, but said Stone then bumped his car from behind. Stone maintains Plummer backed his vehicle into his truck during a fit of road rage. Plummer said he was on his way to a function to deliver a check to the Family Tree foundation when the incident occurred.

WR David Boston, a former first-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals whose seven-year career has been plagued by a string of knee injuries and off-field problems, signed with the Bucs on Wednesday, a week after he worked out at One Buc Place. Details of the contract were not immediately available, but it is believed that Boston signed a one-year deal that included little or no signing bonus and will pay him close or equal to the seven-year veteran minimum salary of $545,000. ... During his first three years in the league, Boston averaged 70 receptions and six touchdowns per season and developed a reputation for being one of the NFL's most dominant and effective red-zone performers. It's those traits Bucs coach Jon Gruden is hoping to see from Boston.

After nine years as the director of pro personnel for the Green Bay Packers, Reggie McKenzie didn't mince words when given his first opportunity to interview for a general manager's position in the NFL. McKenzie, the second candidate to interview for the Texans' front-office vacancy, watched the team's entire practice Wednesday morning. He then spent the afternoon interviewing with owner Bob McNair and various members of the organization. "My message was that I'm the man for the job, and I can lead this team," McKenzie said. "I can work with all the powers that be and try to put a championship team together. If the route we want to go is to win, I'm their guy."

The Dolphins sent linebacker Eddie Moore back to Birmingham, Ala., home of the Alabama Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center to have his injured knee reexamined by Dr. James Andrews. ''We decided to give Eddie a couple more weeks of rehab time,'' Saban said. ``Then, we'd all sit down and put our heads together to see what we feel is in his best interest.'' Saban insists the Dolphins aren't trying to get rid of Moore and would like a healthy Moore on the field.

There's not much progress in Ricky Williams' attempts to make several runs north of the border for the Toronto Argonauts. The Dolphins would like assurances they would retain the rights to Williams, who is suspended for the 2006 NFL season, after the 2006 CFL season ends. 'I'm not in a position to comment on the Ricky Williams' situation,'' Saban said. ``We'll make a comment on it when all the information is in and a decision has been made based on all the information. We don't have all the information right now. ``No decision has been made. We've tried to work with and cooperate with Ricky and his people, supporting him every way we can. At the same time, we have not made a decision.'' Although the Dolphins aren't impeding Williams' path to play in Canada, they aren't exactly encouraging it.

Daunte Culpepper's right knee, the one that was shredded Oct. 30, might be repaired enough for him to take his first official snaps as Dolphins starter in September. He has taken part in all the Dolphins' ''organized team activities'' the past two weeks. ''Daunte has done more than we ever thought he could at this time in terms of his physical ability,'' Nick Saban said. ``He's been cleared to do things at his position as the next part of his rehab -- to start taking three-step, five-step, seven-step drops, hand the ball off on some of the zone plays, drop back and throw it. ``He's got stability, he's got the girth he needs, the strength he needs to be cleared to do that and he's actually done it for all of these practices. We're pleased with his progress.'' Asked if that means Culpepper will be under center in September, Saban said: ``I'm not going to speculate and make predictions. | C o w b o y s Z o n e |

Brandon Marshall is creating a buzz during his first NFL camp. The fourth-round draft pick has been the first name on the lips of several Denver Broncos players when asked which teammate has stood out during the two-week passing camp, which concludes today. Quarterback Jake Plummer on Wednesday was the latest to praise Marshall, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound receiver from Central Florida.Z o n e |

Viking owner Zygi Wilf affirmed what Paul Tagliabue said here last week when the NFL commissioner said the costs to build stadiums have increased so much that it might be impossible to build new stadiums for the San Francisco 49ers and a new team in the Los Angeles area.

Viking owner Zygi Wilf will continue working with Anoka County to see if the 2007 Legislature will approve a county tax to help fund a football stadium and a business development. But with prices for concrete and other construction materials soaring, Wilf said Thursday that the cost of building stadiums in the future might be prohibitive. With that said, he is going to explore all possibilities of improving the Metrodome for the fans and try to find ways to improve the revenue for the franchise.

With the addition of Texas quarterback Matt Nordgren earlier this week, the Eagles have 19 rookies on the roster, including this year's eight draft picks. All will attend today except linebacker Chris Gocong. The third-round draft pick has yet to complete classes at Cal Poly, where he is a general engineering major, and will not rejoin the team until June 7, when the Eagles will be in the midst of their second full-squad minicamp. Timmy Chang, the former University of Hawaii star who owns the NCAA record for passing yards, will be at this minicamp after completing his season with the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe.

Some good health news came the Steelers' way yesterday as linebacker Joey Porter walked into their UPMC offices on crutches after minor knee surgery. Porter had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee yesterday morning, as planned. No other information was available through the Steelers about what was done to the knee or how or when the injury occurred. He had surgery on his left knee in August to repair and/or remove some cartilage.

Former Steelers linebacker Jason Gildon was arraigned yesterday on charges stemming from an altercation at a Strip District nightclub. Mr. Gildon, 33, of Franklin Park, was released on his own recognizance, pending a preliminary hearing Tuesday. A couple told Pittsburgh police about a confrontation early Saturday in a unisex restroom at the Altar Bar in the 1600 block of Penn Avenue. Todd A. Arthrell and Rachel E. Hobson told off-duty officers working a security detail at the club that Mr. Gildon assaulted them in the restroom. |

Texans defensive ends coach Bob Karmelowicz returned to practice Wednesday after spending two days hospitalized for cellulitis, a skin infection. "We luckily caught it in time," Karmelowicz said. "If it had been something that had gone on for another 48 hours, it could have been very, very serious. I know it's a serious thing by the way they responded to it. I'm lucky."

The NFL’s Indianapolis Colts will report to their preseason training camp site at Rose-Hulman on Sunday, July 30. While the complete training-camp practice schedule and the exact day that the team will break camp to head back to Indianapolis have yet to be announced, team officials have confirmed when the Colts will make their official arrival in Terre Haute as they begin preparations for the 2006 season. This will mark the eighth year that Indianapolis has conducted its preseason workouts at Rose-Hulman.

That's really cool. Robert Urich starred as Bleier in a movie about his return to football after being injured in comabt. Not a bad movie. I always admired Rocky Bleier's heart and courage.

Vela brought this up in his blog yesterday.

If Parham and Hoyte work out, we might have ourselves a glut of linebackers and it appears the Saints will need one sooner or later.
Hey, we already gave them Scott Fujita. They owe us.

If they're dumb enough to do Shanle for a 4th I'm game right now.

That will be a high 4th.

Shanle for Dwight Smith.....let's roll.

They've got FS's coming out of their ears.

I'd take a middle round choice for any of our linebackers that aren't slated to start. Fowler, Shanle, Thornton, Singleton it wouldn't matter. If we see enough from Parham or Hoyte, I'd keep them and trade the more experienced players for the best price I could.

I think Rocky had a 1,000 yard season once. One of the few times that 2 backs, Rocky and Franco, both got 1,000 yards in 1 season on the same team.

Maybe we'll see this year with JJ and MB III..

Gruden is going to make VERY effective use of Boston. He really knows how to get the most out of veteran WRs.

How so? He didn't do much for Tim Brown. Once a player is washed up, it's tough to get much out of them.

As much as I'd love this, I don't think Dallas has any interest in Smith.

I once hoped we'd snag Boston ... not sure what happened to the guy recently, but man did he tank.

I thought he would could have helped us after his season with the Cardinals.
