NFL GIVES THREE PLAYERS ONE-YEAR SUSPENSIONS
Posted by Michael David Smith on June 12, 2008, 4:25 p.m.
Multiple media outlets are reporting that the NFL today handed down one-year suspensions to three players.
According to the reports, former Tennessee Titans linebacker Rob Reynolds, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Lionel Gates and former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Chris Terry were all suspended for a year. All were free agents not under contract to any team.
Reynolds is best known to college football fans for committing one of the most heinous personal fouls in history when he was at Ohio State. In the middle of a pileup, Reynolds choked then-Wisconsin quarterback Jim Sorgi, injuring Sorgi’s trachea. Ohio State suspended Reynolds for one game. More recently, Reynolds was charged in a domestic incident involving his ex-wife.
Terry McCormick of the Nashville City Paper reports that Reynolds’ one-year suspension is a result of a violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy. Reynolds’ agent indicated that Reynolds will retire.
ESPN.com reports that Terry was also suspended for a violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy. Terry played 11 games for the Chiefs last year, starting eight, before he was cut in December. He was previously suspended in 2003 for violating the substance abuse policy and for an incident with his wife.
Gates was charged last year with battery on a pregnant woman. He played one game for the Bucs in 2007. It is not known the specific reason for his suspension.
