Goodell: NFL would consider ban on 3-point stance

MIAMI (AP)—A ban on the three-point stance? NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says it’s possible.

Concerned about concussions, Goodell said the league will keep looking for ways to make the game safer. Speaking on CBS’s “Face the Nation” hours before the Super Bowl, he didn’t rule out the idea of banning the three-point stance for linemen to reduce the ferocity of collisions at the line of scrimmage.

While science is still trying to determine the long-term effects of concussions, Goodell said, the league has made progress in increasing awareness about the severity of such injuries.

Goodell has met with NFL competition committee co-chair Rich McKay to begin evaluating possible rules changes.

lol, Goodell is a moron, he needs his head checked for concussion.

I can see it now, Superbowl 80 will be in Istanbul, Turkey, the QB will wear a pink skirt and the linemen will simply slap at each other (only allowed to touch hands and not allowed to take a step) while backs and receivers are only allowed to jog or walk through the play.

Insane. Flags, next?

I like Goodell, but if you do away with the 3 point stance then you might as well make it flag football.

It will not happen though, because the owners, coaches, not even players will go for that.

I am sure that the coaches, owners and players would not sign off on that, if that is what you are asking, yes I'm sure. Now if Goodell does not need their ok to to change that then, the NFL as we know it is in trouble

Might as well just start playing soccer.

No kidding, I'm getting really sick of this ****. Roger is going to ruin the game. He has already had way more influence then any one person should.

We should just take contact completely out of the game... change it to NFFL, National Flag Football League. You know, that would eliminate even MORE injuries. How about we don't even play the games at all?! We'll just do a Madden simulation, that way nobody gets hurt! Goodell? Thoughts? Goodell?

Do lineman typically get many concussions from hitting someone out of a 3 point stance?

I doubt it. My guess is that most concussions come after being hit with momentum, and that this is going a bit overboard.

I mean, how many times do you see 2 linemen get into a collision? It seems that most battle with their hands

and they already have a rule that prohibits hands to the face

Then Landry's Flex Defense frog stances will come back into style.

Seriously, this has to be a joke.

:sarcasm:
And, to further reduce the effects of deceleration trauma that players often receive upon striking the playing field, the NFL is considering replacing astro turf with bubble wrap over a bed of styrofoam peanuts...

Cleats would also be outlawed because it may pop the bubble wrap or possibly poke someone in the eye. All footwear will be replaced with the less offensive, and more NFL appropriate, ballet slippers.

Bowing to pressure from P.E.T.A. the NFL has also decided to replace the totally barbaric, "pigskin" footballs with the kinder & gentler Nerf footballs.
At least until someone, somewhere, begins protesting for the ethical treatment of Nerfs.

In other news...

People do realize that once the ball is snapped, linemen rise out of their three-point stance..? That offensive tackles and defensive ends do not sometimes line up in three-point stances before the ball is hiked..? In this instance, has Goodell suggested taking contact out of linemen's job descriptions?
