NFLN: Official Review - TO "No force out" call was wrong

In that show he usually skates around saying that the official was wrong, I really am suprised he said anything.

Since we are on the topic of officiating, baseball needs instant replay and I think balls and strikes should be called by a computer.

That pass interference they called on Watkins in the 3rd quarter against Moss was offensive interference, not defensive. They same call they made against Fasano in the earlier as offensive interference earlier in the game.

running into the defender on accident (Moss), and purposefully doing so after 5 yards (Fasano) are 2, totally different things, that should have been a no-call since both players reached the ball at the same time

And that's how it should be. You shouldn't overturn the completion just because the official didn't signal the force-out when he knew that, if the review shows that the receiver didn't get both feet in, it was because the receiver was forced out.

We're in agreement on just about everything. Except the superfluous part...

If the ref rules a force-out, he doesn't have to rule it a catch, and vice versa. If he were to rule it a force-out from the beginning, then it wouldn't be reviewable, and it wouldn't matter if he actually ruled it a catch or not. Why not just rule it a force out and screw ruling it a catch? Who cares?


And I don't think you have to make all judgment calls reviewable, but this is such an easy judgment call to make with the benefit or instant replay. The last two catches TO made that should have been ruled a force-out coule have been made easily.

But that's the problem. If he rules it a catch DESPITE a force-out and doesn't call a force-out, a review can overturn the catch when it should not. The only way to fix that is to call both when he rules it a catch despite the force-out.

Yeah, but then it makes it an unreviewable play... since the force-out is called, and as a judgment call it's unreviewable, then he may as well just call it a force-out and be done with it.

BTW... ayjackson that was a great point... just wanted to echo adam's and hos's thoughts on that. never thought of it that way.

Judgement calls will never be reviewable.

I realize that's what the league would like to avoid, but replay officials use their judgment all the time. Last year in Seattle, the replay official decided that if he had been looking at a camera angle that perfectly coincided with the line of gain, he would have seen Witten come up short of the first down. If that's not an example of someone using his judgment, then what is?

For that matter, inside the last 2 minutes of a game, that same guy has to use his judgment as to whether a play merits a review in the first place.
