NIKE partners with Mass Murderer

Michael Vick is back with Nike more than two years after the company severed ties over the quarterback's involvement in a dogfighting ring.

The managing director of the agency that represents Vick announced the deal Wednesday while participating on a panel at the Sports Sponsorship Symposium. Michael Principe of BEST referred questions to Vick's agent, Joel Segal, who did not return calls from The Associated Press.

Segal told SportsBusiness Journal that the agreement involves shoes and apparel but would not reveal terms.

Vick joined the Philadelphia Eagles after serving 18 months in federal prison. He played his first regular season game since December 2006 on Sunday.

Nike, which signed Vick as a rookie in 2001, terminated his contract in August 2007 after he filed a plea agreement admitting his involvement in the dogfighting ring.



I know half of the zoners here are Pro- EX CON MICHAEL VICK, but I am not one of them. I do believe tho he did his time in prison for the crime. I am boycotting NIKE products and I hope a lot of people will do the same. Nike, even though CEO Phil Knight will say signing VICK does not condone his past actions as a dog killer, at the end of the day most people will think it. Looks like I will be switching to Reebok.

I've got bigger fish to fry than worrying about what brand I'm buying based on who is pimping it. I don't buy stuff because so and so promotes it or uses it. I buy it because I like it, need it or it's dependable/long lasting.

I have an opinion of Vick, not Nike and they're my opinions that don't really matter to anyone else.

People need to realize that a company is using profits you are giving to them and putting that money in the pockets of guys like Mike Vick.

Why would nike spend money on a deal with a guy like Vick? Even if he never killed any dogs why sign a player that has shown the ability to do absolutely nothing. Plus he plays for a team where he will never be more than a 3rd qb.

It makes no sense. But again i have given Nike my last dollar.

Vick isn't a mass murderer.

He fought dogs. Which, is illegal... but it isn't murder. They are dogs. When you hit a dog with a car, you don't get charged with vehicular homicide... there is a reason for it.

Because its an animal; not a human.


That being said, I have always been a Nike guy. Specifically the Jordan line. This doesn't change anything. I like their products, I couldn't care less who endorses them.

Nike won't feel any adverse affects to bring Vick into their company again, as far as sales are concerned.

I don't think anybody's pro-Michael Vick necessarily and actually shame on you for trying to push anyone's opinion other than your very own on this subject down everybody's throat, that is why you put that in caps right?...Just because some of us don't have a problem with his currently playing in the nfl, by no means makes half the people that post messages on this board pro Michael Vick. It is his currently his right to play in the NFL and to make a living...Nike and the NFL both are legal avenues for Michael Vick...I'm not really a big fan and I personally thought he was a lousy QB, but what do you want the guy to do? I'm all out of hate and anger for the guy..(been a proud PETA member now for 6 years) I'm not renewing my membership after the blantant capitalization of this mere event(in part)...he's done his time, and now they still won't leave it alone, they want the cash...you can spare me PETA. If it woulda been you or I, some PETA latchkey might have talked about it on the daily news for 30 seconds. Are you sure you believe he did his time for his crime? If so I can't understand why you would have any problem with anything Michael Vick does now...It sounds like you merely think he got off easy. If that's what you think just say it. I learned pretty young, you gotta pick your battles, and you can go and be angry at Mike Vick the rest of your life, but I don't think it'll do you much good.

I don't like the guy, at all, but he did his time. He's served his debt and he's entitled to whatever he can get out of life the rest of the way. I'm not going to hate on Nike cause they see a shot to make money off someone, even if it's someone I don't personally care for.

The dude killed dogs, and that's disgusting, but people he's already done more time than people like Little and Stalworth, combined, for killing human beings while driving drunk. The mass murder thing in the title was so misleading I half expected to come in here and see that Nike had signed Charles Manson to some sort of deal in order to get in on the profits they could make off that loon.

What Vick did was horrible, disgusting, and terrible and I'm the first to say I had no issue, at all, with the time he had to do in prison and what he lost finacially. Doesn't bother me a bit. But mass murder? Please. Let's not go comparing the killing of dogs to people like Manson, Dahmer, and other people like that. It's not even in the same ball park.

On Wednesday, word emerged that Eagles quarterback Mike Vick has renewed acquaintances with Nike.

Mike Principe, whose agency represents Vick for marketing purposes, said that Vick has signed an endorsement deal with Nick.

Agent Joel Segal said that Vick is "excited to be part of the Nike team again," but Segal said that Vick and Nike agreed not to discuss the details of the arrangement.

Nike apparently didn't get the memo.

Darren Rovell of CNBC reports that a Nike spokesman says the company has no agreement with Vick. Instead, Nike is simply giving Vick free product.

"Nike does not have a contractual relationship with Michael Vick," Nike spokesman Kejuan Wilkins told Rovell in a statement. "We have agreed to supply product to Michael Vick as we do a number of athletes who are not under contract with Nike."

Says Rovell on his Twitter page, "I knew this was all bogus."

The purpose of the ruse is obvious. Principe and Segal, buoyed by the lack of criticism and/or outcry regarding Vick as he embarks on the second phase of his career, opted to take a liberty with reality, presumably in the hopes that the vague suggestion that Nike has re-embraced Vick might prompt other potential endorsers to follow suit.

But they didn't count on the negative reaction to the impression that Nike was paying Vick in an economic environment where shoe deals have become scarce. And so Nike, which might have initially agreed to stay silent in response to whatever Vick's camp said about the situation, needed to set the record straight.

Bottom line? Vick's camp needs to continue to urge Mike to remain humble. The apparent fact that his arrangement with Nike was deliberately distorted by those around him makes us wonder how hard he's pressing them behind the scenes to shake the trees that previously dropped cash-filled apples onto his feet.

Come on. Please. Vick did his time and is actually reformed because of it. I can take offense with what he did, because it was reprehensible. We aren't, however, talking as if he killed humans.

I care greatly about Dogs, and love the one that I have. But I think that people are demonizing a man who willingly did his time and is a better man because of it.
