If there's one thing Texans are serious about, it's pickups.

But a Frisco man says his truck is being targeted simply because his homeowners association doesn't think it's classy enough.

Jim Greenwood said he never dreamed his HOA would have a problem with his new Ford F-150 pickup. Then he received the first of three notices threatening him with fines.

"Mr. Greenwood, you're violating a subdivision rule that prohibits pickup trucks in your driveway," the notice reads.

Stonebriar HOA rules allow several luxury trucks on driveways, including the Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Avalanche, Honda Ridgeline and Lincoln Mark LT.

But most Ford, Dodge or Chevy pickups are restricted.

"It's very frustrating and confusing. It's hard to imagine how an HOA would try to dictate what type of vehicle you can drive and park in your driveway," Mr. Greenwood said.

Bill Osborn of the HOA board said the association also prohibits boats, trailers, golf carts and RVs in driveways.

"The high-end vehicles that are allowed are plush with amenities and covers on the back. It doesn't look like a pickup," he said. "It's fancier."

Mr. Greenwood appealed, claiming his Ford F-150 isn't much different from the Lincoln Mark LT.

"The response was: 'It's our belief that Lincoln markets to a different class of people,' " he said.

"Furthermore, one board member told my wife that if we don't like it, we can move."

HOA officials said that many Stonebriar homeowners own pickups but that they abide by the rules and keep them parked in their garages.

"A Chevy Suburban can be in the driveway," Mr. Greenwood said. "If we had a big Hummer, that could be in the driveway. If we had a Lincoln Mark LT, that could be in the driveway. But a Ford F-150 can't.

"That doesn't make sense."

McKinney Ford dealer Bob Tomes agreed. In Texas, he said, truck owners should have the right to park their pickups on their driveways – even in a gated community.

Damn. I just bought a 2006 F-150 because I thought I needed to class up my life. Guess I chose poorly.

What if I put a nice navigation receiver in it? Maybe that'll help.

It really is incredible that they can get away with garbage like that (not that I would have a Ford Truck as even a gift, mind you).

That's the stupidest thing I have heard. You can't park your pick-up truck on your driveway because it is not fancy enough.:bang2::bang2::bang2:

And I bet that if anyone on that HOA needed something hauled they would ask the owner of the pick-up truck to help.

I detest some Home Owners Associations for exactly these kinds of nonsensical rules. A working man is a lesser human being than an Escalade or Navigator owner.

Sounds pretty stupid to me. However I take it the family signed the agreement to the HOA so maybe they should have read it better before signing.

If we take the attitude and behavior of this particular Home Owners Association and multiply them by many, many factors, we have something very similar to the Russian aristocracy prior to the Bolshevik revolution.

It's apparent why communism was such an attractive option for so many people.

Yikes!

Some people like being led around by the nose. Life is so much easier when you don't have to think.

I guess I'd be okay because I own a Ridgeline, but what a farce this is!! I can see not wanting to litter the neighborhood with old heaps up on blocks, (or rusty/primered old dodger chargers:D) but this is a new pickup they are talking about.

They were talking about this on the ticket. The guys friend called in. Its the sons truck. The parents have a lexus and an escalade. The truck stays in the driveway.

I would like to have an HOA just for rules on landscaping.

What amazes me is where is the ACLU on this and other well know HOA actions? Why are not they screaming about this and taking them to court?

because the state of texas allows this. From what I heard tonight about this apparently the HOA has so much power from the state they can force people into selling their homes if they do not comply.

Seeing that this is a dominant republican state and they make all the rules here, take it up with them.

I live in a neighborhood with an HOA. I actually got a notice for my grass being too high. It really was. My yard man had cut it and then it rained and my grass grew like a wildfire. By the time the yard man came, the house look like an abandoned house.

First time in 8 years I ever got a notice like that and it came the same day my grass was cut.

Overall my HOA isn't bad, but then I don't live in an upscale neighbord. Just a working class one where some rules are simply common sense.

Grass needs cutting? Don't panic. I'll be right over.
